Title: WTB: Turbo 'Tap' for TurboDuo
Post by: malicedoom on January 25, 2011, 05:42:59 AM
Was such a thing produced?  I'm assuming it was.  I'm currently using a PC Engine tap for my (USA) TurboDuo, but would like a tap that matches the color of the original console, etc.

They did make a DuoTap, but it doesn't match the TurboDuo; it looks nearly identical to your PCE Tap, only the label on the back was changed.

Aw hell.  Really?

Well, so much for that.  I have a few PC Engine taps - I'm guessing someone at some point has painted one dark grey/black, right?

 :D

Rather than trying to match paint colors, couldn't you just take the casing from a Turbo Tap and swap it out with the casing from a Duo/PC Engine Tap?

Not sure that'd work, but certainly worth a look.  I believe I have a few taps from each system in the collection somewhere around here...

Nope, the jacks are a different size and it's not possible to get all five of them to line up with the plastic housing.

You could swap cables to create a Reverse Turbo Tap, but then you'd have to use Turbo Pads which wouldn't match the Duo....so you'd have to put the guts of five Turbo Pads into the shells of five Duo Pads - then you'd have five "Duo Pads" with TG-sized plugs going into a black Turbo Tap which fits the Duo.  *whew*

Unfortunately, the controllers could no longer be connected directly to the system and there are some one-player games that malfunction when a Tap is detected.    :?

Be cool like me and get a wireless tap and pads.  They're black!

I got my pad/receiver back in the mid-90s from NCS and the extra pads on this forum and from Rising Stuff.  I've also seen 'em on eBay, though the price there often goes wild (sometimes fair, other times insanely high).

I have a wireless set too. I got mine from Hit Japan a couple years ago.

How is the wireless?

How is the wireless?

The pads are very similar to a standard Turbo/Duo pad except that the battery box on the underside protrudes which is not incredibly ergonomic. They have a decent range as long as you don't stray too far from the receiver.

How is the wireless?

I agree that the range is quite good (as is the battery life), but I keep my fingers curled up under the edge so the battery box doesn't bother me.  Also, being IR you have to keep 'em pointed at the receiver, which can take some getting used to.

Have you tried the Acemore Freedom 16?

Nope, but I'd like to.  A wireless joystick sounds good to me, though it'd be even better if it was compatible with the same receiver so I wouldn't have to swap 'em out.
