Anyone have an entire laser and motor assembly for this system that they would like to sell? I really just need the assembly and spin motor. Doesn't need a good lens.
-
Just curious, what's wrong with your laser assembly? Those typically dont fail on Duos.
-
The spindle for the cd spin motor has somehow shrunk in height. It is definitely slightly lower than it should be.
-
You should be able to pull the spindle deck back up. Its very tight but it will move.
-
It won't budge. I am afraid it will break. I have tried pulling it up with many things.
-
Well I finally got it to pull up. You were right. I had to pry it up with a screw driver. However, now the spindle top is bent and lopsided. Going to see if I can straighten it out. Thanks.
-
If it is the deck and not the spindle that is bent you can replace the deck with one from another cd player. You can even use the ones that hold the disc with the little ball detents and eliminate the magnet completely.
-
Wow, I finally got it going again. Took quite a while to get everything bent back just right. The deck seems to move up and down on the spindle way too easy now. I am going to add a small bit of glue to hold it at the correct height. Thanks for the help.

Is there a guide on swapping in the spindles that hold the cds in place? Would love that on my Duo.

I did it on a CDROM2... basically you just have to pull off the original spindle plate and push on the new one. The hard part is not bending the spindle itself while you pull the plate off.

Oh that's right, how about a Duo?

I'll take a look at one and get back with ya :D

Glad to see another system get saved :D Good teamwork!

OK, this actually brings up a point I have been pondering lately. For all those CD ROMS that seem to have broken gears, why not just:
1. Replace the whole laser mechanism with a new one? The new systems have a specified working lifetime of 5000 hours...that's a lot of game time
--OR---
2. Grab a cheap CD player, disconnect the internal electronics, and wire that new mechanism into the old electronics. It may look a bit unusual to
have a CD player sitting on top of the CD ROM, but when you're desperate....
By the way, this is the first picture of a CD ROM I have seen here (despite my previous requests) that is good enough to show the laser assembly outlines. I don't suppose someone could take a picture of the internal mechanism? I'm having a hard time buying one of these suckers on EBAY, and a picture would help me determine the wiring needs.

It is possibly Charlie. The mechanism that you sometimes get with the KSS-220A lasers has a sled motor / mechanism and everything. It could be wired in pretty easily, the trouble lies in fitment etc. One could make a crude setup that might actually work using one of those mechanisms.
PM me charlie and tell me what kind of pictures you want and I'll scan you some good ones.

Posted pix of one I did last year here:
