Title: Spine Card and Cover Scans
Post by: SuperPlay on March 12, 2011, 02:41:22 AM

In my PCE collection I only have around 20-25 games that are complete with Spine Cards all others are without :-(

Rather than me having to re-purchase most of my collection would there be interest in a collaborative project on this forum to scan and share the spine cards that we own with the goal of creating a complete scanned set?

Great idea! I'd be happy to add spinecards to my site if we can get a whole lot scanned.

I'm willing to scan mine. I mostly have common/cheap games at the moment, so I'll wait to see what others post first. Most of my games are back in the US, but now I have these spine cards:

GoTzenDiener
Ys IV
Far East of Eden Kabuki Den
The Legend of Xanadu
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water

OK I will make a start.

sunteam_paul what resolution would you prefer me to scan these in at?  I have been using 300dpi for most stuff.

Also can you let me know where to post/email the scans

If you print 'em you should put a "not official" disclaimer like sparky has done with his manual scans.

I've scanned most of my spine cards for gamefaqs http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/63311.html?type=10

If I have it, it'll be scanned and added to pcedaisakusen.... eventually.  I've fallen behind, but I should be back on the stick soon.

Superplay, let me know when you figure this out if its not posted. I have some I can add.

I would suggest scanning them at 300dpi. I can always resample down, I will probably drop them to 200dpi so they end up this quality:

If you get a lot done, zip them up and either upload them to megaupload or something, or send via www.yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com/) (no registration/payment required on files under 100mb) to paul[at]pcengine.co.uk.

Wow, covers and registration cards as well! I just have to figure out how best to incorporate them in the site now (I could add another index as well as putting links on individual pages, but I'm concerned that I'm going to have too many links on the home page.)

I sent a single scan for Strider via mega upload. Let me know if it is satisfactory and I'll start sending the rest I have.

The resolution is fine, I just want to check the colours. Is the spine faded or is the NEC Avenue logo supposed to have no colour in it (and the Arcade CD-Rom strip at the top looks pale to me but that might be how it is)?
Title: Re: Spine Card Scans
Post by: sunteam_paul on March 19, 2011, 10:31:14 PM
I'm considering having the registration cards as a list based on Company, rather than game - the two Naxat ones SuperPlay sent me were identical and I guess there are few, if any, game specific ones - unless someone knows differently?

One thing I noticed on your cover scans SuperPlay...do you have a 'descreen' option in your scanning software to minimize the pattern you get when scanning printed matter? I can smooth it out a bit in Photoshop if you don't.
Title: Re: Spine Card Scans
Post by: SuperPlay on March 20, 2011, 01:40:40 AM
I currently use the inbuilt scanner driver/tool that comes with Windows 7 64bit as the software that came with my scanner crashes. The standard diver does not have a 'descreen' option :-(  However I have upped the DPI to 500 and this seems to have helped. Let me know what you think.

I have upped the following. Some of the cover backs are slightly faded etc. however I though it would be better to have a fade copy than no copy at all ;-)

3x3 Eyes
Advanced VG
Battlefield Wrestling 94
Burai II
Panic Bomber
Ryuko No Ken

I have just also noticed that the reg card for panic bomber has a version number on it.

Yup, the increased resolution helps. When I downsample them any banding will vanish.

I'll keep the reg cards back for a while until we have a few more of them, then maybe have a good look at how to sort them into the site.

The Arcade CD-rom strip at the top does look a bit faded. Especially when compared to this one. It also looks like the AV logo is supposed to be white.

The best thing to do is zip a batch at once and send them to me via www.yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com/) (no registration required). That way I don't have to wait for the timer to count down before I download.

The last batch I am currently downloading from you were: BLR, Fatal Fury Special, Lemmings, Power Gold and Schbibin Man 3
Title: Re: Spine Card Scans
Post by: sunteam_paul on March 20, 2011, 04:43:48 AM
Because these scans are so big, I'm going to host them on imageshack and link with thumbnails to my site: Example (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/3x3_Eyes.htm). This is actually pretty good because it a) saves me a ton of work, b) saves me getting in trouble due to bandwith usage and c) allows me to put them up at 300dpi - print quality.

So here is what I have sent so far. Superplay can you keep a tally in the first post of what has been sent so far so we don't double up and for easy reference?

Battle Lode Runner Insert (Front and Back)
Fatal Fury Special
Lemmings
Power Golf 2
Schubibin Man 3
Travel Eple
Strider
Art of Fighting
Fray
Brandish
Gradius 2
Hyper Wars
Final Zone 2
Kunio Soccer
Startling Odyssey 2
Xak 3

If you have any problems with the files let me know.

If anyone that does not have a scanner wants to (and is comfortable) mail spine cards that have not been done to me, I can scan them and mail them back.

Adding to the list I have scanned:

CD Denjin (covers & CD)

Pop 'n' Magic (covers & CD)

I do NOT have the spine cards for any of these.

Can you rescan the front cover to this again please? There seems to be an odd horizontal image shift 2/3 down it.

Also - I think your scanner has a scratch on the glass. If you are able, you might want to move the covers to another area of the glass to avoid this:
It's on a lot of them.

If not, I'll keep Photoshopping them out if I can.

sorry I just saw this...I have it set to 300 dpi currently. Is that what you're referring to? I can set it up to 500 dpi I think.

500 would be nice, but that's not what I'm referring to.

When you save a JPEG, you usually have an option/slider for quality. If it's set too low, the scans will have compression artefacts and look poor. If you don't seem to have this, but can save as TIFF or PNG, that is a better way to go.
Title: Re: Spine Card Scans
Post by: Senshi on March 22, 2011, 12:32:57 PM
Ok I scanned a double dragon disk at 600 dpi and saved it as a TIFF (although I can do PNG's as well). I can go up to 19,200 Dpi on my printer . I don't see the quality "slider". I'm using a macbook pro with a Lexmark X4580 printer.

Yeah, that's so much better - super clear now. I think 600dpi is a bit over the top though, you can scan at 500 if you like to make sending them a bit faster.

Hi sunteam_paul

Looks like things are drying up on the Spinecard front. (I only have 2 games left to do in my colleciton that have spines!)

Did you get the CD scans that I sent you for the games that I had already scanned the covers for etc?

Are you interested in scans for titles where I do not have the spine?

Cheers

Yes, I put a few of those CD scans up. I still have a selection of images still to do.

This is starting to build up into a nice collection of high resolution images - so anything more would be fantastic - covers, CD scans, more reg cards etc...it doesn't matter if you're missing spines.

As we are now uploading more than just spine cards (And in some cases covers with no spine cards) I think we need a better way to record what has been uploaded.  Paul is there a way that you could have a master grid on your site?  Or is it just best to let people to look directly at your site to work our what is missing?

Title: Re: Spine Card Scans

Once I'm up to date (I'm hoping to get some done today) it'll be easier just to look at the site.
I considered a list, but once you reach a certain quantity a list becomes redundant, and chances are people are going to head straight for the game page they are interested in anyway. Hopefully we will get enough that most pages are guaranteed to have the content on.

Just a note that imageshack (which I've been using to hold these high resolution scans) are now screwing us all over by deleting pictures if you have over 500 stored.

I'm going to have to go back through everything and move it all onto my site and either remake every thumnbnail or use text links. That might take a bit of time, so the scans not up yet will have to wait for a bit (but they will go up eventually).

Typical. I was searching for a good, hassle free image storing solution since I got tired of photobuckets flashinfested mess of a page and registered on imageshack just a few weeks ago. Guess the search goes on then.

I like using Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) for my photo organizing needs.  With my gmail account, I can upload something like 1GB of images for free and the online images can be public or private or public only if you have a direct link.

So, I was going to try and print out a replacement spine card for one of my games and I ran into an issue.  When I opened it up in Photoshop the DPI/size measurements were incorrect.  Does anyone know the size (width x height) in inches or mm of a spine card?

For some reason the dpi gets screwed up sometimes. The spines should be the same height as the CD box, so just measure to whatever it is going onto.

Well I just pulled out another game that had an obi on it and the measurements I came up with for a single CD case obi are:
7cm wide by 12cm high

Width wise, the obi I was measuring broke down to this:
3cm for the back part with barcode
1cm for actual spine part with name
3cm for the front part which covers the colored (black or white) hinge/inlay thing for the CD on the side

Hope this helps anyone else who might need it.

So, is there a list of what is missing?
I have a few spine cards, and I'm willing to scan them if they're needed.

Once I catch up with the recent downloads, the things that are missing will be, erm, missing from my site.
I only have about 210 more scans to put up at the moment O_o
