What artists do you guys listen to? I happen to be fed up with that "gangster" image that these mainstream imbeciles are putting up.
I get my stuff from those underground mixtapes, artists that never make it to Top 40 but still makes good music.
As mentioned before in another thread, I previously threw Public Enemy in the list of artists that drew the genre away from its simple fun nature but was put in my place. Those guys were all about change.
-
Well I don't listen to new rap or hip hop or any other genre of music today, I prefer the older stuff. I haven't explored rap as deeply as I have other genres, but I do indeed love 80's rap and I have this collection full of good stuff from back then. Rap back then was much more creative and fun, giving the listener a lot more to jam out to. Today it's all about the same cliche beats (where the HELL are the turn tables?), rapping about something serious instead of just having fun, along with trying to rap really fast (which isn't bad I guess, but I think it can lead to bad habbits). But yeah, old skool rap was rad as hell. Rock has it even worse these days though, I can't even call that shit rock anymore...
-
Now if PD (Paranoia Dragon for those who don't know...and if you don't you will :) ) hits this thread he will know more bands than I do but there is a type of Hip Hop out there that isn't main stream and isn't all the B#tches and Bling Bling and such. Band like Jurassic 5 and such. I am not sure about alot of the other artists out there but there is Hip Hop that is Good. Good beats, good rhymes, just good stuff....
-
I really only listen to old "mainstream" hip hop (well, mostly rap really). So Afrika Bambaataa, Public Enemy, RUN DMC, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Fat Boys (don't laugh!), KRS ONE, etc. etc. Think: white boy in suburbia, watching Beat Street, Krush Groove, Breakin' (hey, I have the soundtrack to this, or maybe it's the sequel, and ICE T has the corniest rap on it--I love ICE T, by the way) etc.
Basically, these are the more popular bands that were played on the radio (Kiss Fm for folks in the NYC area) when I was a kid growing up. Even the top 40 stations (i.e. Z100) would play a lot of the hit singles from these folks, so it really was mainstream in the mid-80's onward.
WNYC (public TV) had a great daily show called "Video Music Box" that played lots of great stuff that was never aired elsewhere. Sure, they played a lot of stuff that was on MTV as well, but to give you an idea of kool this program was: you'd never see KRAFTWERK (german electronic band) ANYWHERE, EVER in the U.S. media at the time, but because Afrika Bambaataa had sampled some of their music, Video Music Box decided to play some Kraftwerk videos (a whole bunch, in fact). Kraftwerk is NOT hip hop at all, but they knew that some folks would totally dig it, even though it was a different genre of music.
Even Kiss Fm played stuff by "Art of Noise", another band that was a totally different genre from hip hop, but that was appreciated by the hip hop audience.
There were also a bunch of short-lived music video channels on VHF that appeared in the 80's, and they had shows dedicated to all the popular genres, so you'd see the Cure and the Smiths one hour, and Afrika Bambaataa the next hour
-
Steve, Fat Boys RULE! No need to be ashamed!
-
Heh I also remember before the "bling" showed up in rap videos, around the early 90's or so, the theme of most of those old videos would be "entourages".
-
anti-pop consortium, sonic sum, i guess they're the turbo grafx of hip-hop. the king of rap is GZA of the wu-tang clan. his last album wasn't gangster related, had no curses. he had a song about a psycho killer in a small town, and "fame" and
"animal planet" were classics. the best stuff doesn't sell, but that's probably a good thing because we get to have it all to ourselves, lol.

That reminds me, I got a heads up for y'all.

You'll need real player to stream this New Jersey based hip hop show.
Every Sunday night 10PM-Midnight EST.
-
Cool, I'll try to check that out.
-
To be honest, I went thru my classic rock phase, then gangsterrap in the early 90's liek the wu-tang clan...along with "seattle sound" bands like alice in chains...
about 4 years ago, I picked up a Johnny Cash album, and then it was over for a long time. from the immortal Man in black, I went back in time to old country, the guys who were keeping it real back in the day, waylon jennings, george jones, patsy cline, conway twitty, and Willie of course...also Hank Williams, the first "star" to burn out and fade way, setting precedents for rock artists to come, and you all know his songs, just don't know that he wrote them, and all before he was 29.
This country that Nashville is churning out is god-awful pop CRAP, and they should be ashamed if they weren't so greedy. Music -city has lost its soul.
These days, I listen to Country out of Austin, like wayne hancock, Junior Brown, and Hank Williams III Hank's rockin grandson. the first 1/2 of his show is moaning country, and the 2nd is speedmetal type stuff that i don't entirely care for. Hank III is also thebass player in the deathmetal band Superjoint Ritual. he makes no bones about how Nashville sucks. Neither does Shooter Jennings...-Doom

OMG! OMG! OMG! YOU ARE THE MAN!...JOHNNY CASH ROCKS!!!!!
Johnny Cash changed the world SO drastically, that you almost can't see it. He invented genres of music 30 years before people even knew what to call it. He flew on no one coat tails....he was Hank and more, he was Elvis and more. He is the only person besides Elvis to be in the Country music and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...add to that the fact he is in the Song Writters Hall of Fame and he adds up to something that no one will touch. He is on a musical plateau all his own.
Dont believe me....check out these 2 Albums and tell me for yourself.
Johnny Cash Live at San Quenton
Johnny Cash American Recordings
Johnny Cash was a force of nature.
John R. Cash 1932-2003
[EDIT] I would go on and on about Hank, Waylon...oh man just all of them but...I won't...they are all great and all lived harder than any 2 Hip Hop artists could. Got more women too prolly....so I guess its just taking Hip Hop time to catch up to the original bad a$$ of music...they never will...
-

Its bad...maybe one out of every 20 songs is so well written I can't ignore it. But it for sure not what it once was.
-
I'm not too big on country, but I do admit most of the time Toby Keith makes me laugh.
-
Johnny Cash and Toby Keith are not in the same category of music. They may both be country, but...yeah...not the same. I agree with doomfarer. There really isn't much real country being made these days. It's pop-infused, simplistic tripe.
-
yes, i totally agree = modern country is pure crap. sorry. and it's one of the biggest selling genres in the U.S., go figure.
Johnny Cash rocks. He even did a whole bunch of gospel songs early in his career (definitely worth picking up, even if you're an atheist / heathen, like myself).... great Christian sing-alongs:
JC: "Who was he everybody?"
chorus: "He was Jesus"
repeat X 4
JC: "He was Jesus Christ, our lord"
BACK ON TOPIC:
The Disposable Heroes of Hypocrisy -- Only one album, but damn, it kicks butt. They continued the progressive political agenda that dissappeared from mainstream commercial hip hop.... but they never hit it big themselves. This is hybrid rock / rap / hip hop -- may not be your cup of tea.
Ninja, you gotta give us some suggestions! I'd love to check out some stuff. Even just one or two albums would be appreciated!

JOHNNY CASH IS THE KING!
-
Wow about suggestions for artists, Paranoia Dragon's gonna have to help me on this one. Here's what I know off the top of my head.
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
Some DMX, especially when he cut off his connections with Swizz Beats. Can y'all believe that the whole time that X was doing stuff with Swizz, X really didn't like the beats Swizz was making at all and he just stayed with him to satisfy the contract? He pretty much suffocated his feelings for money.
Every now and then, even more played out artists including 50 Cent (yeah he was good in his pre G Unit days before he got shot and I think he still has the potential), The Lox still manage to bring out good stuff. Gotta look past their MTV/BET Top 40 radio thug image and the catchy clubbing anthems sometimes.
On these mixtapes I posted in that link (the streaming hip hop radio show) there are alot of guys I don't even know who they are. Radio Ruckus is supported through their listeners and there's new material practically every single week because unlike these Top 40 stations that are under the Iron Fist of the RIAA or some corporate bullshit, there's always something new every week because they welcome new material from "basement MC's".
-
WOW! Thanks guys..It's nice to know my favorite artist is so well liked here. Johnny would be happy to know how our generation will carry on his name and influence to the next.
Johnny Cash loomed over the entire musical landscape like some sort of wrathful god of wisdom, heartbreak and integrity..yes Lord_cack, like a force of nature. San Quentin IS a fantastic album, and American recordings is also a classic.. being a veteran, Drive On is one my favorites. I loved the unplugged he did with Willie too....
for anyone who wants to know what to buy/dowload for REAL country with Soul, just PM me anytime...
RIP peace John. there's only one Man in Black.
cack, are you looking forward to the movie with joaquin phoenix in the starrring role? -Doom
-
We have to walk the line to remember the glory of Johnny Cash, Doom.
-
lol..I try everyday Keranu..everyday...you are right. That's what we must do.

Johnny Cash rules. I've loved that guy since the first time I heard Ring of Fire when I was a kid. Its funny you mention that gospel stuff of his Steve, I actually have a big triple disc set that has a bunch of that on it. Some of those old gospel songs are great.
You should also check out Souls of Mischief, they have one song called 93 to Infinity that pretty is the ultimate hip-hop song in my opinion. Also 90% of Naughty By Nature's early stuff is f*cking insanely good.

I like Naugthy by Nature! I was afraid to mention it. I also love De La Soul. Ooops. I let that slip out. I'll totally check out Soulds of Mischief :).

I saw the preview for it on Yahoo.com...its looks incredible. Joaquin Pheonix...I have no idea how he avoids using his normal accent but he sounds so great. I just wish it covered more of his career than it does...Maybe a Sequel :)
An interesting post script to that, about a week after Walk the Line comes out....a movie about 50 Cent comes out....which is really funny when you think about it.
I think that one of the most incredible things about Johnny Cash is how he could be everything. Like in the 60's he could sing with a group of anti-war protestors and then meet with the president the next day and never be lying about who he was. Johnny was unique....and I almost bet we could start an entire thread just about Cash
-

OK, here's some neat stuff for you Johnny Cash / Columbo fans. Yes, that's right, in an AWESOME old episode of COLUMBO (hmmm, circa early 70's, I reckon), our beloved Johnny Cash is the antagonist and he does a killer job (literally and figuratively). The character he plays mirrors his own life in many ways, but it's just a great episode. Keep an eye out for it, since Columbo still gets a lot of airtime (at least here in southern california, anyway).
-
I think that Johnny's legacy really needs to be honored...because we need a man in black (that may sound cheesey to some but not to those who know what I am talking about)....Till things are brighter....
-
I like Naugthy by Nature! I was afraid to mention it. I also love De La Soul. Ooops. I let that slip out. I'll totally check out Soulds of Mischief :).
De La Soul was great....how about Aressted Development...that hip hop to anyone...who cares it is to me :)
This is going out there because these guys weren't popular long but does anyone remember ONYX and SLAM! (yo doo doo yo doo doo let the boys be boy...I clearly remember it  )
Or remember Bone Thugs in Harmony. They had a couple of great tracks back in the day....
If I had to pick modern (main stream) hip hop artists top five would be:
Eminem (say what you want the man grew up on Encore that album rocks)
Mystical (he is outrageous)
Busta Ryhmes (hes outrageous ...plus he rocked in Higher Learning)
Ludacris (again outrageous...plus I think I like Crunk alittle better than east coast/west coast stuff...)
DMX (the guy is crazy but he ends his albums on brighter notes than most also the track "Who We Be"....ROCKS!!)
-
Alright, here's the groups/artists to look for:
Aceyalone-bar none, my favorite MC ever, especially when you listen to his "A Book of Human Language" album, I can't begin to understand how they used to call Biggie, Tupac, & Nas the greatest MC's ever
Freestyle Fellowship-Aceyalone's group consisting of him, Mikah 9, Self Jupiter & P.E.A.C.E. who all have there own albums out as well, but Acey'st still my favorite
Awol One-Deffinitly one of my favorite all time MC's, I'm actually supposed to do a song with him someday, if I ever put out an album of my own that is :P , probably my favorite album of his is Soul Doubt, some of his stuff is really offbeat & an aquired taste
Shapeshifters-Awol One's group, most of them have solo albums, their best albums are Adopted By Aliens & Was Here especially if someone is not used to their wacky stuff, they're hilarious
Jurassic 5-my favorite "group" EVER, they're barbershop rhyming techniques are amazing
Visionaries-consisting of LMNO, 2Mex, Key Kool, Zen, Dannu, & DJ Rhettmatic who most of also have solo albums
Abstract Tribe Unique-it's mainly Abstract Rude rapping, & there's a couple other guys & a DJ Fat Jack
Acid Reign-they're really tight, but it's hard to find there stuff, I only found a cd of there's by chance at Amoeba's in Hollywood, I didn't even know they had a cd at the time, I haven't seen it anywhere else
Afu-Ra-especially his first album is tight, & both Gza & Masta Killa are on there! Speaking of which..
Gza-one of the dopest of the east coast, doesn't cuss his brains out, & keeps things intelligent
Master Killa-ditto!
Inspectah Deck-ditto again!
Akuma-one of my favorite Shapeshfiters, he only has 1 album AFAIK, & it's only on cdr, but it's a great album
Circus-another one of my absolute favorite Shapeshifters, he's proabably the wackiest of the bunch, but I may mention, they get pretty wacky
J-Live-probably my favorite east coast MC, he's kind of like an east coast Aceyalone, super tight!
Living Legends-which consist of Eligh, Scarub, Murs(aka 3 Meloncholy Gypsies), Sunspot Jonz & Lucky I Am/PSC(aka Mystik Journeymen), Asop(not Aesop Rock), The Grouch, Bicasso, & Arata(who, doesn't speak much english, mostly just japanese)
Blackalicious-1 MC Gift of Gab, another one of the dopest crew's ever, they're a part of Quannum with DJ Shadow, if you've heard of him
Latyrx-another dope Quannum crew, consists of Lyrics Born & Lateef the Truth Speaker who both have solo albums as well
L.A. Symphony-consisting of Pigeon John, Joey the Jerk, Flynn, & a bunch more I can't remember right now
Bus Driver-he's nuts, not just in how fast he rhymes, but about the hilarious things he rhymes about
Ugly Duckling-tight crew, kinda like Jurassic 5, but with more humor, their best album is Taste the Secret
Cali Agents-consisting of Rasco & Planet Asia, who both have solo albums
Capital D-who also has a group called All Natural, some really tight stuff out of Chicago
Heiroglyphics-consisting of Souls of Mischeif, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Pep Love, Casual, & a couple others that I'm forgetting
Deepspace 5
Dilated Peoples
Emanom
E Times 2
Existereo-one of the Shapeshifters
Freddy Bruno
Haiku D'etat-consists of Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, & Mikah 9
Ill Harmonics
Jeru the Damaja-atleast his first 2 albums, I haven't checked out his new stuff
Jizzm-don't let the name scare you, he's really tight, & btw, his name means that he gives life to hip hop, or atleast, that's what he told me a while back
Killah Priest-especially his Heavy Mental album, it's incredible!
Large Professor
Life Rexall-another Shapeshifter
Lootpack
L'Roneous
Mars Ill-another really incredible group, that I recently re-discovered, basically, I forgot how dope they were!
Phoenix Orion-who's a big sci fi nut, he told me he is doing a Transformers based album
Naptron-ditto
Peace 586
Playdough
Radioinactive-he's a kind of like a half member of Shapeshifters, most of his stuff is pretty wierd...in a good way
The Roots
Roundtable MC's
Subtitle-another kind of half Shapeshifter, really tight!
Those are the ones I can recomend the highest, in looking at my list of cd's, there's more you'd probably love, but, these are personal fav's. BTW, alot of those guys I've actually met, & they're all really down to earth people, not into the bling crap, infact, they hate it!
-
BTW, the 2 best places to listen to & buy underground hip hop online, I'd say are hiphopsite.com & sandboxautomatic.com. I've been ordering from them for years, so that I don't have to drive down to Hollywood any time I want to buy a cd, though, even some underground stuff you can now find in Best Buy of all places, like Aceyalone!

Excellent, excellent. Looks like I have a LOT of stuff to check out :).
-
There was a series of mixtapes about a couple years back called "Game Over" which sampled video game tunes to make beats.
-
I have both of them, I think there's only 2? There's some cool songs on them, but, most of them, I can't hear a single game sample on. The 2nd one has a cool Kid Icarus beat on it. Most of the rhyming though on both is a little more towards the shallow side of rap IMHO.
-
Forgot to mention, if you see or hear the word Project Blowed associated with any Emcee, DJ, group, graph artist, etc. You can pretty much expect them to be tight. Project Blowed is a place in LA across from Lamert Park, where alot Emcee's start out, & ones that started there still rhyme there. Originally, they started at a place called the Good Life Cafe. Groups like Freestyle Fellowship, Dilated Peoples, Pharcyde, etc. started there, & eventually moved over to Project Blowed, when the Good Life went out of business(or whatever happened, I can't remember). Go here: http://www.projectblowed.com/
-
About the Game Over Mixtapes, here's a couple more I'd point out....
>"Punchout" - it's Piston Honda's intro music but tuned down at almost an octave
>"Hellbound" - one of the tunes from Soul Caliber 1
-
Punchout I alreay figured out, but the Soul Calibur missed me, I can't think of the last time I played that game, & even then, I might be mistaking it for a different game I played.

I don't anything about the music scene you mentioned, but there was (is? I haven't worked in LA for 3-4 years) a "Cafe del Soul" (yes, Soul, not "Sol") near Lamert Park that was a very kool vegetarian/vegan/political co-op type of place that had music/poetry most nights. I usually ate there for lunch, though, and only saw a few bands play there (local LA acts... "Jupiter's Disciples" was probably the best band I saw -- politically aware "asian"-american hip-hop with some great lyrics).
-
If I remember correctly, that place you speak of, is right next door, or maybe a few doors down from Project Blowed. The name sound familliar, & I think I've gone in there for a Sobe or something. I know that there's been shows at PB, as well as right around the corner from there, in some other place, kinda in the back of the building. But it's been years, I haven't had any time to go to shows in awhile, other then maybe occasionally at The Basement in Van Nuys, where I usually see the same people I saw at Project Blowed.
Hmm, Cafe del Soul does sound REALLY familiar, though. Maybe it's not next door, I can't remember. Man it's been ages. Actually, I basically stopped going there, when pretty much every show was only on thursday nights, I have both a Bible study every thursday for an hour, plus I work for a few hours after that at our night job, plus with work the next morning.....heh, there's no way I could ever make that. I think I tried once, but failed, it just wasn't gonna work out.
Jupiter's Disciples, wierd, I haven't heard of them...not that I've heard of everybody, but if they've been around awhile, it seems like I would've heard of them by now. I'll have to check around.
Oh, & for anybody looking into anything Project Blowed related, DJ Z-Trip's album is a good example of mostly (but not all)PB Emcee's & some nice production, not to mention both conscious rhymes & fun, like the one with Murs & Supernatural rhyming about all the old cartoons of the 80's & cereal! There's clips here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007ZEP1S/qid=1126692141/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-6892842-4050221?v=glance&s=music

Rap wise,I only listened to 2Live Crew.I dont anymore, but its funny that all this comes up.2Live Crew comes to play at Arkansas alot every year, esp at frat parties.
I listen to classical,Doors,Blondie,KMFDM,NIN,Ministry, and a littl ebit of other stuff.About any of the rock of today is crappy whine stuff. The new Nervana I guess.
Korn,I saw live, sucked, after seeing how they suck live,I stopped listening to them.
I used to heavy listen to White Zombie/Rob Zombie, but these days his stuff has turned sour as well.I mean Jesus, doing covers of Ramones songs????
Totally weak.
-
King of New York btw, really great movie, has a wonderful 80ies rap movie soundtrack,if you guys care to hunt it down.
-
Personally, when it comes to people performing live, I don't always expect them to be doing their best. I've seen guys who've struggled thru their performances while being sick with a cold/flu/etc. I guess it depends, I mean, me, I don't know if I could handle performing in front of a crowd, I'm a studio person, that's where I work my art. But at the same time, there's guys that "need" a studio, in that, they themselves can't sing, or they need special effects to make whatever instrument sound right, etc. So, I guess there is some reasons to not like a group if they suck live.
-
Michael, I love King of New York! Great movie.
-
On the nite I saw Korn play,it was a Korn/Zombie tour concert,back in 99.
Zombie was great live.Korn was just lame.
NIN played here back in 95-96,cant remember which year exactly, but Trent had the flu, played 9 songs sick as a a dog,but still smoked Korn.
Although Im hearing these days NIN is sucking live too,but for a different reason. The music is fine, but the band just gets on stage and plays, then leaves.Doesnt act like there is a audience of any kind out there.Nothing doen to make the concert special.
I know it may sound lame, stupid idea, but to me,every concert should be played like it could be the last. Some fans are new ones,go to see these acts, and get turned off right away because of this "one"crappy concert they saw of the band, while the rest could have been great on the tour.
But as for Korn,I heard they sucked live at every concert.
But hey, they sucked before even being Korn....Anyone remember L.A.P.D.???? It was Korn if I remember right.
Sucked.

Oh yeah, I love hip hop.

This is pretty funny. Mad Skillz is the best, he's telling the truth though, not to mention he's from Richmond.
