Hey, folks. This just came in today... no, it's not Strider for the SuperGrafx (I don't think that ever really existed anymore), but it is something that we've never seen!
I'll have to take proper pictures after work and make a webpage, so hang on until then!
Edit: Page added! http://www.chrismcovell.com/PowerConsole/
-
  =P~ =P~
What are on these??
-
is that last one the PCE modem?!?
-
Awesome, awesome, awesome.
I'm hoping they aren't Battle Ace revisions 1, 2 and 3. :)
Did I mention how awesome this is?
-
a SGFX kung fu game
damn chris, that is a haul!!!
from where did you get them? how much?
thibaut would pay fortunes for those I guess :)
sūpā jearasu :P
-
I'm predicting another capcom arcade game (obviously not strider) and.. some puzzle game.
-
is that last one the PCE modem?!?
Modem?!? What on Earth gave you that idea?
It's obviously a prototype cartridge, the same as the others just without the protective plastic casing over the chips.
-
SG kanfu? Did they port The Kung Fu to SGX? Why!??!?!!?? There are so many more deserving games!
I can't wait for more pictures. I desperately wish to be proven wrong.
-
WOW!...thats awesome, I wonder if one of them is Galaxy Force II.
-
it's Wataru 2 aka Keith Courage in the Beta zone?
-
is it possible that these will eventually get ripped - making 8 Super Grafx only games?
-
wow. cool.
-
Obvously, it's SGX Street Fighter II, Bomberman 93, and Soldier Blade. :)
Congrats man! What a sweet find. Hope they are all working.
-
I double checked the date... I thought this was an April Fools joke about Strider.
-
wow! now this is an incredible thread, very interested to see the outcome of what games they are. :D
As posted above I also would have thought this was an april fools joke if posted a day later.
-
yeah, even we in japan have not April 1st yet.
Anyway chris, where are you atm?
-
Awesome!
The suspense is killing me! The first one is clearly Kung-fu, but what the hell could "03" stand for? I hope those last two are two more unique games, but non-final betas would be cool as well.
-
sgfx final fight :bonler:
-
Neato, Chris! Where in the heck are you finding these goodies?
-
-
Can't wait
Can't wait
Can't wait
=P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~

 Wow, cool find. I can't wait to hear more about these.
-
sgfx final fight :bonler:

-
The pictures of the PCE modem I saw looked like the 3rd card with the 2 EEPROMSs on them in the same look. sorry false alarm
-
Pretty freakin' awesome! It would be cool if these were new games for the sgx and dumped to share with the community, but I would be just happy enough to see some screens!
-
Is it that monster crazy plane controller we all seen??
-
The pictures of the PCE modem I saw looked like the 3rd card with the 2 EEPROMSs on them in the same look. sorry false alarm
That was just the software part of the Tsushin Booster (http://www.chrismcovell.com/TsushinBooster/tsussw.html).
-
I hope that the full reveal isn't just an April Fools joke, with or without fake screenshots. If they are earlier versions of released games, I hope that there are noticeable differences. The prototype hucards look very cool and much nicer than any I've seen in the past.
Knowing Chris, he could very well have programmed a SuperGrafx demo (like China Warrior with added parallax and/or multiple human enemies onscreen) to release as a "long lost" rom on April 1st. I really hope that it isn't a prank, but it will likely still be pretty cool even if it is. :P
Maybe one of the games is R-Type SGX.
-
I'm pretty sure it's Shenmue 3.
-
I'm pretty sure it's Shenmue 3.

Thanks for waiting. A page is up, so check it out!

NOOOOOOO f*ckING WAY!!!!!!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Either the greatest thing in the universe or the biggest 1st april hoax in history of games :P
Congrats dude :)

  *dead*

BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! *head explodes*

this gotta be a joke

A quick Google search yielded this.
http://faberp.tripod.com/PC.htm
The console is mentioned on this wiki page as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperGrafx
-
Congrats on picking up a truly one of a kind treasure! I (and I'm sure a few other collectors) am envious of you right now. If possible, could you upload more pics, and a video of super kung fu running? I would love to see the game in action especially with the added parallax. Ah to live in Japan...
-
Not gonna believe a word of it until April Fool's is over.
-
Peeps, read the whole text and you will found out soon about its accuracy
-

Yeah me too
-
I'm not going to believe it until I see a video.
-
I remember reading about the Power Console. It definitely existed. I am now wondering if it's compatible with Battle Ace. :-k I have no doubt that you've tried already. :)
-
But I have my doubts there
Yeah, me too
-
It's so hard to trust people around this time of year so I just don't even bother. It could be true, but thanks to April 1 I am gonna say that you are full of shit for now. April 1 only amuses the pranksters.
-
Not gonna believe a word of it until April Fool's is over.
Yeah, especially since this is coming from a guy who could easily make semi-functional ROMs of this stuff himself.
Real or not, The Super Kung Fu is f*cking hilarious. It makes Art of Fighting look like Katate Champ, sprite-wise.
-
This is exactly the kind of quality production I'd hoped for. :P Although overreaching made it less plausible, it is all the more entertaining (like the fake Bio Force Ape proto) and impressive. Still, very creative. I love all the hardware features. :)
It's too bad that a higher quality image of the Power Console wasn't available for the base of the photoshopping. But it still wouldn't have made sense for the extra controller ports to have a handle bar blocking them from use. Also, as cool as it would have been to have had Bruce Lee pose for the 'much more smooth' animation, I don't think that he was available at the time. :P
Of course those are only some of the more convincing aspects. I hope that the screenshots are from actual roms that Chris created. :D
I love how it's called "The SUPER Kung-Fu".
A very nice gift to the PCE community, which doesn't receive enough April Fools' gags. :)
-
I do have to give props to The Super Kung Fu, though I doubt it could compete with the awesomeness of Super Thunderblade. But the character is still too small.
-
Thunder Blade arcade trumps all. But, that's beside the point.
-
Yeah, it's a great April Fools joke :D The Super Kung-Fu is great :D Makes me want to play it even more!
-
I feel like I've been had!
-
What's impressive is only one of the pictures looks obviously fake (the Power Console itself). Unfortunately, that's the most important picture.
-
If he had posted it at any other days (like the roms yesterday) and without silly mentions of built-in 100yen coin operators and stuff, I would have believed it fo'sho! :)
-
well guess I was fooled :P the pic of the power console does look a little strange.
-
Best april's fool ever. Ccovell, you're a king!
-
yeah, he is! No doubts :)
-
My latest theory is that chris made it up so obvious by purpose, to tell us tomorrow that it was not a april hoax.
you never know with our chris
-
Wow, I haven't been here in a while (not sure if anybody even remembers me. lol) and I've been trying to catch up with all the stuff that's been going on.... Then I see this thread.
I couldn't believe it. I read about the Power Console way back and stared at the pix in the mags so many times... but I never read/saw anything about a coin slot or bill slot. :-k
Anyway, I wanted this to be true so bad and not some April fool's like others have said, but one thing stood out to me right away...
In the "Credit Test" picture that shows the coin and bill slots, the 1000 yen bill depicted is the current design from 2004. So, it wouldn't be possible for that picture to exist in 1989. The oval that's to the right of the red circle gives it away. The previous (1984) bill didn't have that oval.
I pretty much believed everything else though (and still want to!) so kudos to Chris either way. The Super Kung Fu is awesome!

you never know with our chris
That would be the master stroke!
Personally, I would love The Super Kung Fu if it didn't have digitized Bruce Lee a la Pit Fighter.
I don't care if this is an April Fool's prankāI can die in peace now, my soul knowing that The Kung Fu will always have a special place in my heart.
-
Happy April Fool's Day, everybody! :D
-
I knew it!
-
I knew it!
LOL!
-
Heh. I had my suspicions from the stickers on the eeproms being identically crooked as those on the Tsushin Booster, but a damn good laugh nonetheless. :D
-
Yes, some people knew already it was a joke from little inconsistencies and oversights in my photo editing, but hey, absolute verisimilitude was never the goal. I'd be scamming people for money if I could make the photos that realistic.
I couldn't do much about the Power Console picture, except for making better shadows. The original pic was a grainy scan from a small magazine page, so a lot of massaging had to be applied anyway.
And as a fact, I did consider checking out a yen bill from 1989 before I drew it, but I figured I didn't need to be so meticulous since nobody would be that anal. I guess for future hoaxes (?) I'll have to assume a higher level of both.
Basically, everything on that page -- except for a single EPROM card, the Tsushin EPROM so-mentioned -- is fake, and either does not exist or is not in my possession. I'll put up a page later, perhaps, that shows some of the original photos.
The screenshots were mostly hand-pixeled by me, except for the Bruce Lee photos, mah-jongg tiles, the rock and explosion, etc... Sorry, they're not in PCE ROM form; just .gif or .iff  I did stick to 9-bit colour space almost exclusively tho.
Finally, as Black Tiger pointed out, a totally convincing page is not a good April Fool's joke. Just like in comedy, a scene should start out normal, introduce something incongruous, and then crank up the unbelievability until people get the joke. I thought with my "Excited-blind-faith-diehard PCE Fanboy" writer's voice and Johnny Turbo echoes (Arcade feel!) it should have tipped everyone off; the ridiculous features of the Console (Dual screens! Money feeder!) were the punchline.
-
Anyway, in a first instance when the power console picture showed up, I got a cold jitter down my spine. That alone was worth it :D
-
So unfair... lol
-
Yeah it's like one of those great dreams you beliefe it is no dream and then you wake up.
-
Mathuis is rightYeah I def feel. thatconsole is the reason for battle0ace
-
Short after the picture-shock was gone, I was wondering, why isn't it docked into a SGFX? It doesn't make sense to dock it into a simple SCD ROM and hey play some rad SGFX games. lol.

Heck yeah, the jape was perfectly executed*. Only you and your collection of prototypes and rare goodies could've pulled it off so successfully.
* - though a Queeg reference would've made it even better (just for you, nat).
-
I was convinced up until the dual screen part. I just thought suddenly... there couldn't hope to market that thing, unless to arcades. The coin slot thing totally removed all doubt for me that it was fake, since those things are huge! You could never fit a coinbox in the side of that thing.
-
And just think of how much a 1000en satsu and coin checker would have costed in like 1989? lol. beyond any feasibility.
-
I thought the coin/paper money was in reference to the SGX arcade board/system recently discovered last year (with some puzzle game for it). I take it, it was not?
-

Not if it were built to the same standards as the rest of of Power Console (ie: that flight yolk wouldn't last 10 minutes in an arcade before it was snapped clean off).
-
Nice :-)
Much better than having my keyboard remapped at work today ;-)
-
 Good one. Had me going for a bit.
-
You're so evil Chris!
-
Happy April Fool's Day, everybody! :D
Perfectly executed! I love that you took the time to do this. Building anticipation by telling us "more info coming soon" was just divine. Perfect execution, as far as I am concerned.
:)

It is docked into a SuperGrafx. At that perspective, the slightly wider bump at the back-right is all of the SGX that sticks out of the Power Console (the Expansion Bus lump is visible too, of course.) And I "connected" the whole thing to my SCD to take RGB screenshots from the Power Console software, of course. O:)
-
This reached a new level of awesome.
-
I called it first :)
Nice prank, this is one of the best holidays!

I thought I remembered being docked to a SGX.
-
Once I read "Other ports down the left side are an additional video output from the Console, and a coin slot and bill feeder too!" I could no longer take the rest of the page seriously :D .
HOWEVER Chris did raise something that I never even noticed before: are those 2, 3, 4, 5 ports on the right side of the peripheral really for extra controllers?
I also doubt the system has LCD displays, but that would be awesome if those little radars lit up!
-
Damn, I know it was a joke and all but I wish there was another SGX game out there.
-
hahaha... wow i still believe it :P
well done... and a hell of a good read :)...
-
HAHA...i think its time to let the cat out of the bag, the Porto's are not real, but the power console is, i put in half of the price(were talking car money here, it was allot)....i haven't had it in my hands yet, but from what Ive been told the yoke or steering is a little wonky.

Ah lol I'm le uberdumb. How could I have forgot about that #-o The Power Console literally eats the whole SGFX!
-
This was awesome. One to remember for years to come. I can't believe how much work you put into it. Thanks for the thrill at first and then the great laughs after!
-
You played on our wish thinking, i remember dreaming about what the next super grafx game would be, this was 1991 after 1941 counter attack was released...20 years later my dreams were crushed once again :(
-
Chris, I'm not joking, and I know you have better things to do with your limited time/energy, but the only thing that would have made the SuperGrafx prank even better:
A SuperGrafx sequel to Blodia (Timeball). I honestly love the game and wish there was a "100% pure adrenaline" version of the game with with gratuitous special effects (even if the effects were confined to the background art). Actually, maybe a SCD update of Blodia (that I fantasized about previously) would be just as awesome. Anyway, even if you only create mock-ups, I would be able to die happier.
:)

Agreed!
To be honest, I was totally fooled by the article.

Am I the only one who is actually disappointed in this whole thing?
-
Am I the only one who is actually disappointed in this whole thing?
I'm not especially disappointed; at least no more disappointed than I am about there not being an Arcade Card version of King of the Monsters, SuperGrafx Strider, and all the other hinted at goodies. 'Twas a good laugh. 8)

Nice bump... I've got to admit I would much rather use a power console than a wimply lil duo tap when playing a 2 player game!

Apparently, NEC designed the Power Console to support daisy-chaining. This allowed up to five Power Consoles to be daisy-chained together for maximum MotoRoader mayhem.
-
i think its hilarious that even the box you used was altered for the page - so nothing on the page was real!

That's what I was thinking. 5 of those things at once! Largest console ever!

Yes.
By the way @ccovell thanks for the laughs!

amazing find!

Thanks! But a per-page reminder: this was an April Fool's joke.

What a classic. And I actually believed all of it, including the coin/note feeder part at the end! Shame on me lol.

I completely forgot that my own comment here: about daisy-chaining up to 5 Power Consoles for MOTURBO.

I was just thinking about this for the first time in years a few minutes ago thanks to my wife reminding me that it was April Fool's Day tomorrow. This necro-bump seems too convenient.
-
Thanks for the bump! I never knew about the Power Console, even if this 'find' was an April fools (and I got fooled 5 years later, lol) it was still good learning about something I didn't know, also yeah, it was a good laugh ;3
