I'm certainly not looking for a complete collection, although I have recently tended towards picking up complete games. However there's definitely a wild variance on how much games cost and how much fun they are. Obviously one is a matter of opinion... But can I possibly get some input into which games are good fun without being extortionate?
Examples are great games that cost loads (£50+) (Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, Dracula X)
Great games that cost a bit (~£20) (PC Kid series)
Good games that offer good value (~£10) (Soldier series, Bomberman, Shubibinman)
Ok games that are a little expensive (~£20) (St Dragon)
rubbish games that cost loads, rubbish games which are cheap, etc etc.
For the moment, I'm in the range of the second two - here's my recent purchase history:
Jackie Chan £10
PC Denjin £18
NewZealand Story £11
Final Soldier £6
PC Genjin 3 £17
PC Genjin £14
Pomping World £6
I think some are probably better value than others, but overall it balances out. And I'd rather have those than say, Rainbow Islands and Dracula X.
I guess what I'm asking for, is recommendations in a similar price bracket?

Saint Dragon for 20 quid that robbery I got my copy for like $6

I'd buy it for $6, even if it's not as good as the Amiga version. I'm going on eBay prices there, there's only 2 copies, but that's all I have to go by.
What about the others? Reasonable price?

I've just recently gotten into getting the more expensive games. (well this time. Back in the early 90s I routinely paid like $100 for new import games)
Anyway Recently I bought Dracula X and the 2 Spriggan games, and they were all worth every penny, I have zero Buyers remorse for them. That said there are some games that cost a lot and are just ok-good. Fausette' Amour being the most obvious (if debatable) example... Though I still Reaaaaaaallly want it for some reason.
Oh and some games are total crap and just cost a lot cuz they are rare like Strip Fighter. It's just best to do a lot of research.

Spriggan doesn't cost that much does it?

Depends. I paid $50 from Game of Japan. My friend who's in Japan right now saw it for like 2000 yen somewhere. Usually they aren't that off on the price so he may have seen a good deal (and passed it like a shmuck) But at least I talked him into getting himself a Duo-R and some shooties :) (and me a white PCE and a Famicom w00t)
Spriggan Mk 2 was also $50 at GoJ
My personal criterea for an expensive retro game is anything over $40 US

2000 is damn cheap, unless it is uberunmint w/o spine etc.
for a solid copy, 4500 would be the least you would have to pay atm.

Thanks I feel better now. :) My friend is pretty picky so I doubt it was too heinous. I'll tell him to go back and get it!

I've spent small fortunes on some games, and they've been so good I forgot about the money in
5 mins.
Other times I've spent $1 on games and felt ripped-off in 5 mins...

Good deals:
Gate of Thunder 3-in1: This is the best single piece of software released for the system since it has not only Gate of Thunder (best shooter on PCE/TG-16, IMO) but also the first two Bonks and also the first Bomberman. US only, not very expensive, f*cking cool.
Ninja Spirit: I think the US version of this game is cheaper than the JP one most of the time. All fans of Turbo and ninja need this one.
Slightly more expensive:
Star Parodia: probably almost $50, most of the time, but at least as good as more expensive shooters like Nexzr.
Hanatakadaka!?: Prices for this game vary widely. I've seen it go for anywhere from $15-60. Bat-shit crazy shooter with Japanese mythical themes. Somewhat unknown, but I don't know why. Its totally great, IMO.

Son Son II is hard to beat for a great game at a bargain price.

Great, thanks for the recommendations guys!
*edit* what's the going rate for Daimakaimura?

Any game over $100 costs more than you will get out of it. I have paid more than $100, and usually I don't get the 100s of hours to really justify the price.

Totally your own personal problem. My Progear CPS-2 board has logged 500+ credits since the day I bought it. In an actual arcade 1 credit = $1. I bought the board for about $300. So by buying the game, I saved myself over $200 in
credits alone (not to mention the time and money required to get to my local arcade).

When it comes to the turbo/pc-engine I can't really see paying over $100 for a game. However, it also depends on what format it's for. Like SuperDeadite I can see paying in the couple hundred dollars for actual arcade pcb's. To me that is always worth the price if it's a game you love and constantly play. For Progear I sure as shit could play that price as well and have no regrets what so ever. If I paid over $100 for Magical Chase I would kick my own ass. Everyone has their own price point for their idea of fun though. I've learned that being on these boards for the past 5 years. The worst someone could do is buy a game based off of price. Some get the idea that if a game costs a lot of money and a lot of people want it, then it should be a good game. Doesn't work that way for everyone. I just stick to games I know, have played in the past, and will get a shit ton of play time to warrant paying a high price.
-
I think plenty of peeps have payed more than $100 for a cib minty dracula x. Don't tell me that you can't play the $100 out of this.

For most Turbo games I'd have to agree, Rondo would be the big exception.
As Deadite has said, arcade games are the big exception for value/fun ratio. My friend's Street Fighter Zero 2 board has been played for thousands of credits and only cost about $100. I've played the living f*ck out of many KOF games making them a value at $100 or so (average purchase price of a KOF MVS when a year old or so) but also a pretty good deal even if buying the massively expensive (but otherwise identical) AES versions.
I would pay $1000 for Y's I&II if I had to. Lucky it was a pack-in. :)

Since I am a collector, its doesn't really matter whether I get the bucks out of the game or not (gameplay wise). But what I can say, I even got the bucks out on my Sapphire, for which I have payed proud 32'800yens back in 2000. Had (still have) multiple fun with it. I would buy it for that price again at any time.
Let alone bazaaru de gozaaru no geemu de gozaaru.
-
My mentality is somewhere between that of collector and player. There are some games I want just because I think it would be neat to own them (Fausette' Amour) But I also want to play it. It looks like an interesting game if not $100 worth of interesting, but I know it's just a matter of time before I get it.
I however would never buy what I consider an absolute shit game (Wonder momo) for the sake of collecting or completeness.... Though I did once buy Altered beast for PCE CD just to avoid leaving a shop empty handed

The original Image Fight for PCE is one of the best "bang for your buck" buys out there for any system. You should be able to find it for less than 20 bucks.
