I realy would like to get my hands on more Sega console games, but I don't have a good source to tell me what I should be looking for.
All I have at the moment is Vapour Trail.
Also any good platformers would be nice to know too :D

Divine Sealing :)

Divine Sealing :)
LOL
The master system version of Ninja Gaiden is great.
-
You can't go wrong with Thunder Force II and III for the Genesis. Fire Shark is pretty cool also. There are many good shooters on the 'ol Genesis/Mega Drive. If you get into collecting Mega Drive games that will open up a whole new world for you to explore. That's something I need to start doing. I have a region modded Genesis, but haven't imported anything yet.
The SMS didn't really have any stellar shooties on it. I can't remember the name of one launch title, but it was okay.
-
some of my favs on MD
V-Five (only port of the game and includes the easier Grindstormer version)
Gleylancer
Undeadline
Gaiares
Gynoug
Verytex
on SMS I only know about the Power Strike/Aleste games and they are pretty well made.
-
Oh I've already played and loved Gynoug Opeth :P
Is it true that it was done by the same designed as Cho Aniki ?
Speaking of which : are there any weird/quirky shooters ? Those are my favourite.
Oh and Gley Lancer too. Haven't finished it yet.
-
yea NCS/Masaya did Cho Aniki and Gleylancer
they also did L-Dis on PCE another great one and cheap too!
Curse is a weird shooter on MD not quite Cho Aniki level but has some interesting boss designs

Yea it is. I still need to get ahold of both of those on my collection hehe

Since no one brought up any Master System shmups. Power Strike aka Aleste is good.
-
For the SMS:
-Power Strike - This one is good and can only be purchased via mail order direct from Sega in 1988, so build a time machine like I did. I remember it arriving one cold winter's day. The box art is glorious blue and white. Great game with amazing music.
-R-Type - The SMS version is great and it was made by the same fools who made Power Strike. It has an extra level with amazing music that the PC Engine was not powerful enough to include.
For the Genesis:
-Thunder Force 2 - Major soft spot for this game. It has great music and I love the overhead stages.
-Thunder Force 3 - Instant classic. Great music
-Thunder Force IV aka Lightening Force - Great music and very challenging.
-Gaiares - Immensely challenging and very rewarding. Excellent graphics and music and a very innovative weapons system.
-MUSHA - Really cool game made by the same fools who ported R-Type to the Sega Master System, so you know it's probably gonna be good.
-Wings of Wor - Starts out kind of slow but really picks up after level 1 or 2. Cool music and fun gameplay, even if your character is the size of a gnat.
-Elemental Master - Interesting overhead shooter with fantastic music and very challenging gameplay.
-Super Fantasy Zone - A perfect sequel to the original with colorful graphics and catchy music that comes out of not only the left but right speaker as well!
-Gley Lancer - Lance a whole bunch o' gleys in this cool horizontal shooter. I am all for gley marriage.
There are likely others that I can't think of right now.
-
Insector X, all you need. 8)
-
Thanks guys. Gley Lancer and Divine Sealing are already within my grubby little hands, and have beaten the later,
But sadly, only five stages :( I could done with more strip scene- I mean, more levels :P
-
I tried playing Divine Sealing last night and could only get to level 3. That game is tough because if the random movement of the enemies and the distracting backgrounds that hide enemy bullets.

Heh, I was waiting for that.

Level 1 of Gleylancer and the "body" level of Wings of War/Gynoug gave me a hard time separating the bullets from the background too.
-
Both of those games are much easier to separate the bullets from the backgrounds.
-
Divine Sealing is just a terrible game in every aspect. The powerup system is about as broken as it gets. I love the background transition on stage 3, where the background just changes to something completely different out of the blue. A few of the bosses don't even move. I've beaten it, but Stage 4 is pure 100% memorization as enemies will come from behind you in large waves with no warning at all. Such a train wreck of a game. I'm never selling my copy. :)
-
Super Fantasy Zone is a freaking work of art and the European version is cheap and runs the same as the Japanese version on genesis systems. :)
-
But the Japanese cartridge looks cooler. And the box in tiny and cute. :)

Phelios, cmon people.

Phelios, cmon people.
I played a little Phelios bitd. I gotta be honest, I didn't really care for it.
-
Phelios is a very poor port of the arcade game.
-
I liked Phelios for the bondage cutscenes :D
-
MD Phelios is Ok until you see the arcade version. I really need to buy the pcb one of these
days, it destroys the MD version in every aspect.

Well yeah but we were talking about SMS/Gen shooties. I really liked it for the Genesis.
Does Sega CD count too? Sol Feace and Android Assault? Silpheed?
-

Lol, TRUE THAT.
-
The arcade was a pretty boring game, too. Both games played the same, the arcade only had more scaling and rotation. I think that NAMCOT thought that gamers would rather have clouds than a rotating background in the first level when it came time to make the Genesis version. Dumb ol' NAMCOT. It would have been better as a KONAMIT game.
-
I'm surprised no one mentioned Sagaia/Darius II on the Genesis/MD. That game is awesome! I always loved Zuntata's soundtracks. Also Opeth mentioned Verytex. I love that game! It is such and underrated shooter, but is such a good game. Only 6 levels but it has great music! Also track down Elemental Master! Great technosoft shooter. Slap Fight (Power Wing) on the MD is also really good. It has the original arcade and an extra re-done Mega Drive version with music from Yuzo Koshiro! I also like Twinkle Tale. It's not really a side or vert shooter, but it's still a shooter and a really good game.

I finished it and it annoyed me to hell :P
Sylphia is a much better greek mythology themed game.

Tats, I was convinced you would have recommended TRUXTON for Genesis.
