Title: Shinobi
Post by: soop on April 18, 2011, 10:43:56 PM
I was playing (and really enjoying) this yesterday, when I got kind of stuck on the second boss. Gamefaqs http://www.gamefaqs.com/tg16/589101-shinobi/faqs/20644 was my first stop, but the FAQ there is just lifted from the Master System, and there's all sorts missing.

For instance, I've never come across extra weapons in the PCE version, meaning the only way to defeat the boss is using your magic straight away, flicking on turbo for the shuriken to destroy the beetle things, and then facing the boss one on one, but it's damn hard.

Anyone know a proper FAQ for TG/PCE Shinobi?

The PCE version does not have Stage 2 like the arcade version does (A helicopter with ninjas is the Boss). Instead it skips to Stage 3 where Mandara is the Boss. You should use your Ninja Magic on the teacups then put your turbo on and shuriken them as quickly as possible. If they hit you, they just knock you backwards but if you are too close to the screen edge you will die. Mandara shoots bouncing balls and if you figure out the pattern you can stand under the high bouncing one then jump and shuriken his eye for victory.

Yeah, figured that one, but it's a lot of pressure at that point.  The rest of the game until that point is easy enough now, but I find myself trying to adjust too much mid jump.

One thing I noticed was that the PCE version doesn't seem to have any pickups.  Is this correct?

It is also lacking the sword slash when you are close to an enemy which came in real handy with enemies who blocked your shurikens. The only powerup that I remember from the arcade is a gun (also removed from the PCE version).

Dang, PCE Shinobi sounds like it really sucks. I was a huge fan of this game in the arcade back in the day.

NoNoNo.  It's a fantastic game (so far).  It's just not the same as the Arcade/Master System one.  It's pretty much the only one I've ever known (I played the arcade version way back) but considering I've owned it for 15 or so years and I still enjoy it must say something.  If you can pick it up for around $10 unboxed, I'd say you've got a bargain.  If I was borrowing a copy, I'd pay double that for it.

One of the few reasons to own a Sega Master System...

Shinobi is the reason I bought a Master System, and it is still one of my favorite games of all time.  No scuba men or helicopters on the PC-E?  Count me out.

Back in the day, I'd probably be embarrassed by the apparent lack of power the PCE provided.  Missing stage in Shinobi and needing to split R-Type up into 2 different cards?  What the hell?  Have they no shame?

No shame, since they charged $$$ for R-Type II (it would have been kool if you had to "earn" R-Type II HuCard, no additional charge).
