Title: New to TurboGrafx-16, is there anything I should know.
Post by: TurboExpressFan on May 14, 2011, 06:40:55 PM
I am currently in the process of getting a TurboGrafx-16 and was wondering what must have games are there for the system. What games usually cost and any other advice you might be willing to give to a TurboGrafx newbie. Thanks for your time. Will most likely be hooking it up to a Sanyo or sansui 19inch LCD TV or 13 inch Zenith CRT.

All 32-bit generation and older games will look best on a CRT TV.
The best games and most games are for the Japanese version, called the "PC Engine". The best are also on CD, because of the various hassles which I won't get into, when you are ready to play CD or Japanese HuCard games, you should then buy a Japanese "Duo R" or "Duo RX" system.
In the meantime, here are some great and very affordable games to get:
3/4 run 'n gun:
Bloody Wolf
Shooters:
Aeroblasters Blazing LaZers
Action platformer:
Ninja Spirit
Platformer:
Bonk's Adventure Bonk's Revenge
Adventure/RPG:
Dragon's Curse Dungeon Explorer Neutopia Order of the Griffon Cadash -Arcadey
Pinball:
Alien Crush Devil's Crush
War Sim:
Military Madness
Misc:
Chew Man Fu Bomberman '93 -if you shop right, it's not expensive

I like Dragon Saber a lot because it is a two player shooter. It's just fun to play along with a friend. However, you would need a converter in order to play it on a US Turbografx system.

If you meant Dragon Spirit, it's not very special by TG-16 standards.

I should probably have mentioned that I was able to find a converter so I did mean Dragon Saber.

Ahhh.. with your converter, you certainly have opened up a new world. Tons of awesome games never released here can be had for your system. Check out the seller, HitofJapan on ebay. He carries tons of games for the PC Engine, and his prices are normally fair. I buy from him a lot.

Everyone needs Son Son II, one of the best platformers on the PCE.

Thanks for the advice, what games would recommend getting for the converter. I have done a bit of Neo Geo buying when it comes to games but just starting with this, actually decided to get out of the Neo Geo scene for now(expensive) and got a TurboGrafx instead. I think I might have actually have gotten the Neo Geo from him. What are some good plat-formers for the system besides Bonk. Thanks for the help.

What do people think of Dragon Egg.

Dragon Egg is pretty simple and ridiculously easy. It's still a neat game to play through, but nothing special. Only buy it if you find it cheap. When I zipped through the game on the hardest difficulty, I couldn't tell the difference from normal difficulty. :P
