Ever since I moved into this house almost a year ago, I've continuely thought of Turbo/PCE games to play, gone to my cd racks and have found them missing.
Now, I've since manage to find at least a dozen formerly missing titles, but this keeps happening.
What killed me the most, is that I recently got the Capsule book that is dedicated to Kabuki Den and this reminded me that I already had the demo disc with covers from a few years earlier(that I never got around to playing through). And I don't want to cut out the CD from my brand new book until I get a second copy.
Well today, I thought I'd fire up Valis III and sure enough, I can't find it. This depressed me further since it reminded me how I couldn't find the Kabuki Den demo after going through everything.
But, just as I flipped through the last stack of games, I finally found the Kabuki Den disc(but still no Valis III).
So the good news is that I found another missing game(so you can all sleep at night now).
The bad news is that I just lost another one(expect nightmares).
-
Sounds good & bad.

Do you have some thieving roommates or something? That's pretty wierd, the only game I ever displaced was Dynastic Hero and that was back in like 95 I think, hah.

I still have boxes of stuff I haven't unpacked, since I don't have room for everything already. Between a couple hundred PCE/Turbo games and hundreds of mixed up CDs and video games, I'm lucky I managed to weed out as much as I have.
I also recently just uncovered my demo for Tengai Makyo IV. I had forgot that I even owned it until I saw a couple copies on eBay for $150(I paid $5, on eBay of course). It still took a while to find, for the same reasons. But I would have hated having to pay big bucks to get it back.
-
Ahhh, don't worry, I'm sure Valis III will show up :). In a few years, perhaps, but it will show up. So: think "good".
You'd hate how I've been living for the last few years. I've left most of my collection packed up in boxes. Every few months I'll rotate in a new box and send the old one back into storage.
So, basically, when I'm in the mood to play a particular game -- I can't. So I have to choose something in the current "box" I have.
I was in the mood to play Lifeforce (NES), but I had to settle for Cobra Command (NES) instead. It was the closest match in the "box". (Aside: I actually like Cobra Command, but it' does get tough).
I was in the mood to play Wonderboy in monster world (SMS), but I had to settle for Shinobi (SMS). Don't ask, for some reason Shinobi was the closest match I could find to W in MW.
It gets frustrating. But at the same time, I would never realized how awesomely fun (in a masochistic way) Super Pitfall (NES) is. I am determined to beat that game, though I don't know if it is humanly possible. Some bastard out there may have beaten it, but DAMN!
-
Did I already tell you about the faq for Super Pitfall at gamefaqs? I think I remember you saying you were playing it a long time ago. That dude's faq is crazy, he spent so much time on that crappy game. The faq was interesting to read though, I was so curious if it was even possible to beat the game, and turns out this guy did it like 4 times in a row.

Yes, I'm sure you told me this before! I'm the type of person that wants to do stuff without cheating (i.e. looking at a faq) UNLESS I'm at the point where I want to literally punch the tv screen. I haven't played Super Pitfall since the last time I mentioned it (it's not in the current "box"), but I am strangely infatuated with it. I'm so tempted to read the faq, but I can't.
When folks post hints here (i.e. nodtveidt's strategy for Exile II), I have to avert my eyes because I don't want to be tainted. I got pretty far in the game before losing interest in it. The discussion about the game here (a few months ago) re-kindled my interest in it. I'm going to revisit Exile II, and thankfully I've forgotten 100% of everything that folks said about it, so I'll have to develop my own strategies.

I'm the same way when it comes to questy games.
But when it comes to Japanese adventurey/RPGish games, I don't blame any gaijin for using a walkthrough right from the beginning.
-
Oh yeah I'm the same way, I hate even reading reviews of games I'm currently playing. I always wait until I'm finished with the game, then I go read the faqs, reviews, and cheat codes.
I have the same infatuation with Pitfall 2 that you have with Super Pitfall. I've never been able to get the god damned Atari 5200 version (supposedly the best version according to Zig) of it working though on an emulator, so I think I might have to actually buy an Atari 5200 at some point. Ever since playing that game on an old Commodore 64 back in grade school I've had this fascination with it, especially since I could never beat it.

I'm in total agreement. I haven't played an RPG in years, so I should have made that clear. Plus, there's nothing wrong with consulting a faq to get a translation of menus and stuff!

Word up, I did not know that the 5200 version of Pitfall 2 was supposed to be that sweet! I've had a blast playing Gremlins and Rescue on Fractalus on the 5200 though, the system is worth it for those two titles alone :). I'll have to keep my eyes open for Pitfall 2... there aren't too many worthwhile games for the system, unfortunately.

I had something similar happen to me with my Zelda for SNES. I always put my games in the same spot and am not likely to just up an lose a title. I think someone straight up jacked it since I live in my college town and all my stuff is at home which I am at now. Oh well $10.00 and i got one from a used game store. Of course I am missing some NES games, haha aren't we all. I still think about that punk-ass that Gshanked my Mega Man 2 14 years ago.

I've been a crazy Masters Of The Universe fan since it debuted and when I was like 9 years old someone snuck into my yard and stole my entire collection from under our porch(I was too tired to lug it all in that day).
We're talking Snake Mountain, Castle Grayskull and a large number of early figures and vehicles. It was never the same after that, until I moved out on my own to the big city and started picking up figures again at flea markets.
Now my large PC Engine collection rivals only my ridiculous MOTU stash(one room of my house is dedicated to it).

I watched MOTU as a kid and enjoyed it, but I never got into the toyline (G.I. Joe was my vice). Anyway, I was visiting the Museum of Television and Radio in LA... and basically the only thing you can do is to dive into their archives and request shows to listen to or watch.
Well, imagine my delight when I looked up MOTU and they had the CHRISTMAS EPISODE !!! It's insanely enjoyable because they had to bend over backwards to bring XMAS into the He-Man universe. Damn good stuff. I also made my wife endure an episode of She-Ra.

Yeah I was hardcore into GI-Joe myself and did have some MOTU but that was when I was too young to appreciate them (Atleast when they started out in like 1982-3 or so). I still till this day have a huge GI-Joe collection sitting in my basement. Its got like around 10 vehicles and 33 figures. Not in too bad condition and all have weapons/accessories (Also still have the cardboard packages in a folder somewhere).

Yeah, unless my parents are lying to me, they kept all my old GI Joe toys in the attic. I even sent away for the special items (i.e. Refrigerator Perry! and some windsurfer thing for Zartan) but I played with all these toys and they have average wear and tear.

My vice is laser disc.I eat them up.I just picked up some more lds this past week, and 3 new LD players. Some of my fav movies on ld are the 80ies ones, like Evil Dead 2,Robocop,LifeForce,and Big Trouble in Little China.I do not collect dvds at all.I totally reject them.I might buy one I like,do a dvix rip,and get rid of it just as fast.DVD packaging blows, way too simple, nothing special at all. With LDs you feel like you got what you paid for.And you still do.Plus the audio is way better. So much rich bass.Plus movies made untill 2000 here and 2k1 in japan, over 15,000 titles here,30,000 in Japan means I will never run out of stuf to hunt for.Just picked up La FemmeNakita and both the Widescreen and Full screen versions of Blue Velvet, and the THX edition of Terminator, and a few others. There was so many cool movies in the 80ies that are just not on dvd anyway, that onLD canbe had with a little hunt.BTW does nayone remember Capt. Power,Starcom, inhumanoids,or Centerians? All fo those were great toys and shows.for the 90ies ExoSquad was pretty damn good too.

Big Trouble in Little China is so badass and Evil Dead 2 rules of course.

Yeah, it's a shame that LD didn't become a more popular format. Imagine how many more great titles would have been released!
Blue Velvet is one of my favorite Lynch movies... when I first saw it, I was holding my breath through some of the later scenes! I don't recognize any of those shows / toys you mentioned... but Captian Power sounds vaguely familiar. I'm much more familiar with 80's stuff, personally.
Another aspect of LD that I love: the sheer size of the LD (like a vinyl LP) -- yet so futuristic. It's the perfect old skool meets new skool situation.
-
Speaking of LD. Ever see the movie SLC Punk? The european guy.
"It looks vike a vecord but it is not a vecord"
"Deres a movie in dere."
-
I think I remember that part, haha. I haven't watched the movie from start to finish before, but I'm pretty sure I remember that part and enjoying it.
-
Ye athat part was funny, the show off Russian guy who was crazy.Ld lasted from 77 basically to 2000 here, and 2001 in Japan.DVD wont even make it near that long as they are changing the format soon again to a higher grade of data storage,so all in all Im happy with how it turned out. That and not everyone was making movies for it,there was control, and for the most part very high quality stuff.Box sets for LD cant be touched by the DVD counterparts.Movies like Hardware, are only bootlegged on DVD,and are real on LD.I love the players, even the ugly industrial ones, because of the heavy build, and I have never had one wear out and die on me.I can not say this fo rdvd players and cd players.
Most ld players from 88 up to now play cds. There are even combi players that do dvd and ld.
LD looks closer to film in alot of cases, where dvd you can tell has been cleaned up digitally, and has digital artifacts in dark areas and soem lite areas.
Depending on your player and tv,what kind ofcomb filters you have, you can achieve near dvd like quality in sharpness without the artifacts, but this will also depend on the ld you are playing,as there are some poorly mastered crap ones.About any THX title is worth having on LD,because of the very close to film look. The THX laserdisc program really did the job on many lds making them look way better then the dvd counterparts, escape from la being one of them.I have well over 100 movies on ld,and maybe 10 dvds on any given day.My ld list grows monthly. For awhile I was goingto have to downsize my collection, because of space, but I have managed to conqure that area of concern.BTW LD holds the crown to the only good widescreen version of Lost Highway.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, LD was around a long long time. DVDs came out in 96, BluRay will supposedly be unleashed upon the market early next year. It will be very interesting to see how long DVD holds up as a video format.
-
A lot of LDs were mastered in composite video so you do get a not so great image with those ones. The THX ones I am sure they used RGB to do it.
Also I remembered I always wanted an LD player just for the extra stuff they put on movie Aliens. Now of course the DVD is out with all that footage, but this was back in like late 1980's when it was on LD.

Oh god..let's not get into action figures! I had many...my Joes collection was complete...well, up to a certain time period I had all the Joes..right up to when Serpentor came out....then star wars current to Jedi, although I just collected figures mostly, except for the scout walker... Raiders of the Lost Ark figures, flash Gordon...MOTU...Even then I thought Faker was a ripoff!T
he micronauts...oh..the transformers of course...I picked up Optimus Prime at ana Auberchons hardware store..which was weird...
I had the haunted mansion with dracula and the Universal Pictures Monsters ...Does anyone here remember the movie Monster Squad?
does anyone here remember M.A.S.K? I think it had a Tv show too...way cool...those cars and stuff were wild...I can't even remember alot of them now..I'll have to do some research!
sorry..maybe another thread started:)

Big Trouble in Little China is so badass and Evil Dead 2 rules of course.
I had a Juicer at the Organic food store in town yesterday, and I felt so good, I felt like I had drank that potion they all had at the end before the final battle...:)

BADASS!
Does anyone remember those "Z-Bot" toys from the early 90's? Those things were so rad.
-
MASK was awesome, I had the motorcycle and the diesel. I always wanted the gas station though, that was like the ultimate.
Does anyone remember Jason and the Wheeled Warriors? I loved that cartoon and toys, I always wondered if he got to find his father or not since my local station stopped carrying it before it ended.
-
How about the Inhumanoids....anyone...I had Decompose....I thought they were the shit...short lived but cool...and Transformers...I was into MotU as well. I had a bunch of figures and my unlce ran them over with a lawn mower....same goes for a great deal of my Transformers actually.
I also liked GI Joe and Mask, I always wanted the big 4X4 one...looked like Van hell I don't remember exactly. How about Robo-tix...the action figures, you assembled them and they were mechanical...but they had a short lived Cartoon show....Dungeons and Dragons had a line of action figures too, I only had one....memeories....
But currently, on the action figure front, I like the new MotU figures...and some of the new Transformers "Alernators" Figures especially the 2005 Mustang...Grimlock.
If you haven't seen these yet check them out here:

I also (being a huge Kevin Smith movie fan) collect his line of Inaction Figures....so...I like action figures.

I lost the game disc to the Sega Gameworks book/GD-ROM combo. Quite annoying that, if I remember right I put the GD-ROM into a jewel case because it kept falling out of the book, then I accidentally threw the jewel case away :x
I also used to be into LD back in the mid to late 90s. Had a collection of around 400 discs (mostly anime, where's ol' Blasta Masta ). Lot of Japanese releases and box sets, very nice stuff. Sold about 80% of it a few years ago in a fit of "I need to grow out of this shit (i.e. collecting games, anime, and other useless crap)". I regret it sometimes, but that collection was damn hard to move around and LDs in general are rather fragile. I did love collecting those far more than DVDs though. DVDs just feel cheap (hey, they ARE cheap ), I miss the massive jackets on LDs. Gotta say though, Michael you're a bit crazy on the LD vs. DVD. Thought all the diehard LD guys finally accepted that a well mastered DVD beats the best LD hands down long ago, but you're still hanging in there :).
-
We miss Blasta Mazta!
-
M.A.S.K. -- I remember thinking that the cartoon was average... but the toys were neat (everything that transormed was hot then: Gobots, Transformers, Voltron, M.A.S.K., and later ROCKLORDS!).
I actually had a M.A.S.K. comic book or two and I really liked them. Always wanted to get more of them.
-----------
Here are two that will stump most of you: Does anyone remember Spiral Zone? It was a pretty crappy cartoon that promoted a pretty kool toy line of the same name. The most iconographic image from Spiral Zone is a huge motorbike with one, huge "wheel": the rider sat inside the wheel (where the hub would be). That's just the koolest.
Another short-lived toy line that I really dug was called... "Legions of Power" (or something like that)... it was a concept similar to ROBOTIX (someone mentioned this earlier) and LEGO: you get an assortment of plastic cubes, shields, cockpits, guns, etc. and you build spaceships, motorized tanks with rubber tracks, etc.
----------
STARBLAZERS is one of my favorite cartoons from childhood, along with Battle of the Planets.
Rocklords were lame, by the way.
-
Yep...Spiral Zone stumped me...but I remember Legions of Power. Never owned any...I wasn't big into things you had to build...I was sure I would have f&*ked it up and then been out of a toy....Same with ROBOTIX...I liked that show though...Did anyone get into the Thundercats action figures. I thought they were OK...but I think that is one line of action figures that actually never really did the show justice.....maybe thats just me...I had some of them...they just could have been cooler I think....Of course Thundercats was one of my Favorite shows...I thought that the overall story to that show was great.
-

Tendril here:) and like one or 2 of the human characters..I always wanted the tree guys and the rock guys....tey were sweet..
Inhumanoids, the comic was pretty sweet...done by Marvel thru a line called Star Comics...:)

I guess....you know the funny has just been gone recently and maybe if we had someone who would just absolutely blow up and go off every-now-and-then it would be OK.....you know kind of like a mass tension breaker....

I knew that the series was short lived but...damn.

Does anyone remember Starriors? They were robots that all had some sort of windup action (like a spinning drill in the chest or something). I used to have a bunch of those when I was a kid. There was also a comic book series from Marvel that I liked quite a bit, but as far as I know that was about all the marketing the Starriors got (I don't remember any cartoons).

I love Starriors and have looked for them online off and on for a while, but could never find them because the closest I came to remembering the name was Starrios.
I used to take them apart completely to see how they worked and them back together gear by gear.
I used the little silver "men" as the humans in Transformer and sat them in Optimus Primes chest or Starscream's cockpit as drivers.
Thanks for finally solving this for me.

^^ I was pissed when I found out years later that the early Japanese versions of the Transformers (whatever they were called before they were called transformers, Micro something?) had little guys with them, and the springs even worked on the guns! I used to have an awesome Japanese version of a transforming gun that was part of the Megatron line (there was Megatron, a revolver, and the guy I had in the series) before there was Megatron, it was so kickass.

Not only that but there were versions of the japanese Optimus Prime that came with the Matrix of Leadership as well...they get all the wonderful toys....
-
Black_Tiger you should try to get a set of the Starriors comic books. It was a 4-issue limited series released around the same time as the Transformers comic book started (around 83-84). Pretty good story and art for a comic licensed from a toy.
Did anyone collect the Transformers comic books? That was one of the first comics I got into as a kid, and I had all the issues up until the mid-20s or so. Again, it wasn't too bad considering it was based on a kids' toy. I liked the whole storyline about the Transformers coming to Earth, Sparkplug Witwicky turning the tables on the Decepticons by poisoning their fuel, then the shock ending (pun intended) of the limited series with Shockwave returning to wipe everyone out and take over leadership of the Decepticons. Then the whole bit about Ratchet being the only Autobot left alive and free, Optimus Prime's head (!!) captured by the Decepticons and used to create new Transformers, reviving the Dinobots, and finally Optimus escaping by using Jetfire (always one of my favorite Transformers, yeah I know it's actually a Valkyrie from Macross ). Pretty cool stuff to a ten year old. :P
Speaking of Megatron: do they still make Megatrons that look like a real gun? Kind of a sad story, one of my friends when I was a kid tried to rob a convenience store with a Megatron toy. He was only 12 at the time and is lucky he didn't get himself killed. Came from a broken home and all that, but even when I was 12 I was shaking my head in disbelief when I heard about it.
-
I know that storyline pretty well...when Optimus finally returns and kicks shockwave's ass i think it was issue 12..that was a triumphant moment in my early years..The comic did a great Job expanding on all the transformer's personalities..and Optimus Prime is one of the wisest, stalwart and Noble of characters..great storyline to kick off that series. The Dinobots origin issue was fantastic, as was the Megatron issue, where he has amnesia and gets in the hands of that petty criminal...that was interesting..i think it was issue 13...

I dont know about classic transformer comics but I recently perchased a graphic novel....Origins I think...it is great and the art work is incredible.

Damn, you folks are stirring up the old gray cells! The Transformers and G.I. Joe comics were very well done, I think, and they both dealt with adult "themes" as well. For example, there's an awesome scene in G.I. Joe when Major Bludd grabs a bazooka or grenade launcher to kill somebody... of course, there's a kid and 2 NUNS in a station wagon blocking his view. So he blasts them.
I might not be recalling all the details, but my jaw dropped when I saw that. They had been building up the story of the kid and the nice nuns who picked him up... you thought the story was going to revolve around them. Then BLAMMM! It's all over and it shifts to something else.
I read all the Transformers comics as well... they really brought the toyline to life, providing great back-stories and everything.
Wish I kept all my old comics...

The G.I. Joe comic scene you described sounds awesome.

They did a 12 issue run of Transformers comics in the 90s that were absolutely awesome, great story and artwork. I used to have them all but sold them like a dufus years ago, ugh.

When I was young, I had the 3 guys who transform into the camera, but never made it here as a toy(but are still in the cartoon), plus the japanese versions of Shockwave and Slag.
Our local toy store had lots of japanese toys and models for some reason. I remember seeing the Macross models and saying "its supposed to be named Robotech!".

Oh yeah, Reflector! He actually made it here but was a mail in offer only, I had the US version of him years ago when I collected TFs. Man I had this awesome book too that showed every transformer ever, plus a crapload of the Japanese ones but I lost it in a move, it sucked.

You just brought this thread full circle back to the original topic: losing stuff during moves. :)

I use to read the, Transformer comic book by marvel it was pretty cool.
Pretty much it had it's own universe wich had nothing to do with the cartoon.
Still i all most wish i didn't... sell them but at, that point in time i move onto reading manga insted.

actually, apparently the transformers were in the Marvel Universe, as the opening limited series issue #3 featured Spiderman as a guest:)
The transformers universe was also a great publication by marvel...

They have been rereleasing Transformers toys in Japan and the US.
You can find the classic remakes at Toys R Us.
In the US there are no plans to release the Megatron toy based of the p.47 pistol. Also, before the trasnformers were released over here, they were even under anothe rtoy line in Japan that Takara did.And there is a knock of fline the exactly cloned them too in Japan,in which soem of the clones made it here in the US in certain Scags Alpha Beta stores and Radio Shack in peticular, which sold the clone of Shockwave.
The japanese release of Megatron shoots little plastic pellets.Hit ebay, you are sure to find one for sale in the 80-100 dollar range.

I liked in the GI Joe comics when they had the sense to kill off the entire "TechnoForce 2000" team or whatever it was called. That and the plot about food poisened trapped Cobra agents like Zartan and Billy,Cobra Commanders son,and how Firefly escaped this somehow to come claim revenge.GI Joe comics by marvel were overall pretty good for back then, for Marvel anyway.
I liked the original black and white Ninja Turtles more.Violent and with great stories and artwork.Eastman and Laird were great,up untill they started to burn out.I also have the 4 trade books that were color reprints of the black and whites by First Publishing.
Yet again wonderful releases.
Some other great comics are the First Publishing releases of Lone Wolf and Cub.Frank Miller usually did the cover art,and a opening talk about what was going on per issue.
Howard Chackins American Flag released by First Pub.
Wonderful future type comic, with silly type stories,Blade Runner esque type settings sometimes and so on.I remember it fondly.
Any Terminator or Aliens or Predator comics by Darkhorse in early 90ies.Espically if the artwork is by Chris Warner or Sam Keith.
Avoid the Terminator comics released by NOW,who did SpeedRacer comics,as Now publishing sucked. They sucked so bad that they lost the rights and DarkHorse got them instead.

I first got into comics by reading Transformers and then GI JOE. At one point, late into my Joe comic collecting I read someone's Uncanny X-Men and the door opened all the way.

I have an issue of Uncanny X-Men along with the first issue of the Empire Strikes Back comic books that I bought from this comic book store in a town not too far away from me earlier this year.

Did I mettion the original Crow by James o Barr?Great also.
