Title: Giving Deep Blue another chance
Post by: DesmondThe3rd on May 24, 2011, 08:34:05 AM
OK, if anyone seen my old review and past playthrough video knows that I wasn't a big fan of this underwater shooter Deep Blue. Well, after all these years I was able to beat the game again and I went in going to give it another chance to hopefully see why some people actually like it. Before I really agreed with EGM and Spida1a's review of it but I also respect other reviews from websites like the Brothers Duomazov and other user on this forum for example so why not pop it in again. Do I end up liking it and jump on the Deep Blue bandwagon or do I start yelling at the screen like a craze hobo looking for change?

I personally will never be able to tolerate the game. I just can't stand the music... it ruins the whole experience for me.

Hey Starsoldier,
I watched your playthrough video - yeah, it doesn't look like much fun. :)  You've got some skills though!  I don't think I'd have made it past the first level.

I've always liked deep blue maybe just because it's different than other shooters I've played. Just seems like an original idea. Oh and I like the music on this one.

Yeah, it's very strange relaxation music for a game so hellishly difficult.

Thanks, I use to die a lot on the first level. Remember, I played it so you don't have to.

I can't stand the music because it's hideously grating. Whoever designed their instruments needs to be castrated and then quartered and fed to zombie chickens.

I don't know, Deep Blue always fealt like a stripped down shooter especially compared to other games released during that time like R-Type, Truxton, and Blazing Lazers. All three weapons just fire straight for example.

Well, it's only shooter I know where you're encouraged not to shoot anything.

I believe you mean *EVERYthing. It's a shooter that encourages you to think ahead.

You're underwater, and it does a good job of emulating that. You have to think like you're in a submarine.

Sadly that's one of the best strategies though, don't shoot anything in order to regain loss hit points. This also creates a strange paradox however, the title stops being a tradiational shoot 'em up and starts being a underwater obstacle course and it gets boring to me personally. Again the game is close to being a decent enough title if the default speed was a little faster, the level design was more creative, and if the ending wasn't one of the weakest in video game history. Just my opinion though, take it for what you will.

I've always thought the music would fit into an RPG well.
