Title: doh, broke my cd drive
Post by: soop on May 28, 2011, 10:32:00 PM
Trying to fix a warm-up issue, I disassembled the drive according to the laser replacement FAQ.
I wad careful, but now it doesn't power on.  All the connections should be unharmed, but is there anything obvious I might have done?

Make sure both laser ribbon cables are fully seated and oriented properly.  If one is crooked or not in all the way it wont work.

Reseated them both a couple of times, and I'm pretty sure they're both right.  With the small one, you can tell it' in as far as goes anyway thanks to the right-angled ribbon cable.

The large one isn't grounded, but it wasn't before anyway, I doubt that could make a difference could it?

And the other cables match the FAQ by colour, so I doubt that will have changed?

No, nothing at all.  I can post some photos later maybe, but it all looks right.

Does that provide any clue?

Is that a new replacement laser?  And if it is, did you remove the little solder blob on the ribbon cable?

It's the same old laser ( though I have a spare) but afaik, the ribbon was like that.  No ground.

ahh.... hmmmm... double check the installation and connection of your lid closed switch.  if it thinks the lid is open it wont turn on.

That was something I was thnking bout... itwas in te inside of te case, so I shoved it through that gap. It'sjust a light sensor, right?

No its a physical switch... its just two metal pieces that are bent to contact each other when the lid is closed.  It sits in a specific spot and has to be just right to work.  Check that out and let me know what you find!

That was it!  Took a while to figure out how it fit exactly.

And me messing with the cog didn't fix my original issue, but I've learned.  Now to either buy some silicon lubricant or await your fix, Blue.

Thanks so much for your help and patience, that's another I owe you!
