Title: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: c0ldb33r on November 05, 2011, 05:13:11 PM
I haven't used my Wii in forever.

In fact, we bought a new entertainment center, and I left my PS3 and 360 still hooked up, but actually opted to pack up the wii as I never use it.

Anyone else in this boat?

I bought a wii not long after its launch... I wore that thing out the first year or so, but nowadays... its been probably 6 months since I fired it up and that was to play a gamecube game...

I still fire up it up for multiplayer Smash Bros action when friends are around but sadly no other games.

Mine has certainly been collecting some dust. Last game I played was donkey kong country. Don't go packing it up so prematurely though. There is a new Zelda game coming out this month!

Skyward Sword is in two weeks.

That is all...

I still haven't beaten the last Wii Zelda game. I got a few hours into it and was BORED.

Last Zelda game I liked was the cel shaded one.

I sorta hated Twilight Princess too. But I'm optimistic about Skyward Sword. I'm pretty good friends with Phil Kollar from Game Informer and I trust his opinion. He just gave it a 10. I'm keeping the faith.

I've noticed that a lot of people make it some kind of badge of coolness to brag about how long its been since they turned on their Wii. There is no such thing as a system so awesome that it can entertain you while switched off...

I've been playing Mario Galaxy lately. Its only $20 now so I couldn't resist.

I finally turned my Wii on after a long ass time to play Kirby Epic Yarn, Lost in Shadow, Fragile Dreams or whatever, Klonoa, Sonic Colors, and the newest Kirby that just came out.

I go through phases with all my non-NEC consoles, and the Wii is no different. I'll go through periods where I get into something and play it a bunch, and then nothing for a while.

The Wii has some really great stuff; the Mario Galaxies, Mario Kart Wii, the Sonic "kart" racing game (forget the name), Star Soldier R, Smash Bros, the Neo Geo re-releases on disc and the VC, Donkey Kong Country, Bust-A-Move Bash, New Super Mario Bros, and lots of 2D stuff, some of which I've only barely begun to get into.

The Wii isn't the console for next-gen 3D FPS games, and that's just fine with me, since that's the sort of shit I hate anyway. The Wii does what it does, and does it well.

I don't think that's it. There are a few great games and loads of shovel ware. I want to love the wii, but just don't.

I finally got Sin and Punishment 2 and have really been having a good time with it.  I also loved Kirby's Epic Yarn.  I still start a new game of Mario Galaxies every now and then.  Last weekend I also played Raving Rabbids Go Home.  I am always a sucker for the Rabbids games.  Like nat, I go through phases where I won't touch any systems except one.  I always play something turbo related every week, but I do move onto other consoles.  Usually, I only play my Saturn for a couple weeks then move to my MVS or arcade PCB's.  It really is a spur of the moment for me and gaming.  I go in phases.  The Wii has been seeing a bit more attention lately, cause it has been so long since I've really sat down to play it.  I usually use it every day for Netflix and homebrew for watching movies.  I also have been enjoying Mednafen on the Wii.  Finally nice to have some SGX and PC-E that plays about as good as emulation is going to get to the real thing.

I play it quite a bit, I have about 60-70 games for it, not counting downloadables. There's a lot of decent stuff on it to be quite honest. It's just that the decent stuff is 5% and crap takes up the other 95%.

I'm gonna copy-and-paste segments of an article I wrote a while back about Wii's library. Here are a handful of games that I think make the console worth checking out...

Monster Hunter Tri, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaro’s Treasure, The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return, House of the Dead: Overkill, Sonic & Sega All Star Racing, Madworld, Virtua Tennis 2009, Samba de Amigo, Sega Superstars Tennis, Sega Bass Fishing, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, and Sonic & the Secret Rings, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Blast Works,A Boy and His Blob, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Red Steel 2, Klonoa, Little King’s Story, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Metal Slug Anthology, Shiren the Wanderer, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Deadly Premonition, Okami, Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, No More Heroes 1 & 2, Cave Story, Star Soldier R, Excite Bike: World Rally, World of Goo, Adventure Island: The Beginning, Alien Crush Returns, Bit.Trip.Beat/Core/Runner/Void, Blaster Master Overdrive, Castlevania The Adventure/Contra/Gradius ReBirth, Lost Winds, Mega Man 9 & 10, Military Madness: Nectaris, Phoenix Wright, Strong Bad, Swords & Soldiers, Tales of Monkey Island, Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid: Other M, New Super Mario Bros., Zelda: Twilight Princess, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Battalion Wars 2, Wario Land: Shake It, Excite Truck and Excitebots: Trick Racing, Mario Kart Wii, Punch Out!!, Super Paper Mario, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby: Return to Dreamland.

I don't play my Wii every day, but it's far from collecting dust. I used to play a lot of VC games on it, but I tend to just hook up the original systems these days. Now, I pop in Wii Punch Out pretty frequently, it's my favorite game of the current generation.

I think thats the problem with the Wii: most of the good games are Nintendo produced and the lack of good third party games are whats killing it. I haven't played my Wii since the new Sonic ( can't remember the title) and Epic Mickey. I mean, there is hardly any worthwhile rpgs for the thing unless you count XenoBlade (f you are lucky enough to live in Europe) and thats really about it. Yet, I feel there was so much more that could have been done with it in regards of sword fighting games, but instead we get the waggle effect even with the motion sensor plus deal. Anyway, thats my two cents. BTW, I second that the new Punch Out game is awesome!

There's not a day that goes by that I don't play my Wii.

Mainly because of the fantastic homebrew support! My Wii has essentially been turned into a homebrew zombie with bootmii installed in boot2 for fast system recoveries and brick protection,  severally custom IOS’s installed in it and an external HD plugged up for loading Wii games off it from USB loader GX and for storing other emulated games (emulation on the Wii is top notch). It has become my go to system for almost everything retro. :D

It really is a fantastic emulation machine, and the only modern system that can output in 240p over component.  Plus, thanks to VC there are tons of controller options and adapters if you look hard enough.

My Wii has been seeing a lot of action lately due to Zelda Skyword Sword. Its finally nice to play a motion game without waggling about. Its really 1:1 movement.

Loving Skyward Sword. I didn't really care much for Twilight Princess or the last two DS Zeldas, so I was skeptical about this one. I'm about 15 hours in so far and it's the best Zelda I've played since Wind Waker. Maybe even better.

Some good stuff there. Although, if you have an XBOX 360, get Dead Rising there instead. It's much better. On WiiWare, there is also LIT, which can really get you if you take the time to play it. On a lighter note as well, the redone version of "Haunted House" from Atari is pretty cool too.

I do pretty much the same as I do with the 360.  I look around for good downloadables, and buy what looks good (used) on store shelves.  I can always find comfort in knowing the Wii has good titles like Boy and His Blob, Murumasa, Cave Story, Castlevania Rebirth, Contra Rebirth, and the New Super Mario Bros Games.  Good stuff.

The Nintendo Wii was a great reason for familys to play games, I forget how many times at the holidays a group of us would start up a tourny of Bowling and even SSBB along with Mario Kart. I feel Nintendo did the smart thing releasing the wii. If it wasn't smart then explain The Move and Kinect? Excited for Wii U in 2012.

I'm not too sure if I'll be getting the Wii-U at launch, but I have a feeling we'll be getting one by 2012's end.  That is if the world doesn't come to an end at that point.

I'll get a Wii-U if the kinks are worked out, the controllers aren't too expensive, and we get some good games. That says it all right there. Oh, and I want to be able to transfer my VC andDLC from my Wii unit without having to buy it, yet again.

Post by: Father5&JoshUnion on December 07, 2011, 03:18:28 AM
Well, if you say get a new Wii, and log into the online part with your current Nintendo account you are able to download all the same stuff over again without having to pay $$s for them, so i would assume this would be the same method for the new Wii-U.

FONY should take a page out of that book!  Yeah, I'm looking at you PS Vita!!  Forcing me to repay for Downloadable versions of hard copies I already own!!  SUCK FONY!!

I, too, want to get Zelda SS but I'll wait until the price drops...I have plenty of games to keep me occupied.

I have recently been replaying that Castlevania remix (Rebirth on WiiWare?) that Konami released a few years ago for the Wii market...it's not fantastic, but I never finished it and I'm having a decent amount of fun playing through it again. I can't help but have mixed feelings: I was somewhat disappointed when it first came out...but now I'm just trying to appreciate it for what it is.

I really wanted this to be an exhilarating, jaw-dropping 2-D Castlevania extravaganza. Instead, it seems like a half-hearted pastiche (yes! Pastiche!) of earlier games. I feel it was an opportunity to make something kick-ass, but they opted for a safer, predictable path.

So, yes, I am playing my Wii.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: futureman2000 on December 14, 2011, 05:17:20 AM
I wish I could play SS, but our Wii has some issues. When powered on, it has about a 10% chance of booting to the Wii menu - the rest of the time just a black screen. Once we do get the Wii menu, there is about a 10% chance that the chosen game/program will properly start - again, usually resulting in a black screen. This is why we leave it on with Netflix running 24/7... which I'm sure may damage the system. Wii shame spiral?

havent touched my WII in forever.. bought it roughly when it came out - played it for a month and its been collecting dust. My ol retro nes, gens, and tg16 get more play than it. For the newer stuff.. my x360 takes care of that.

Bought into the new hype when it came out. Maybe 5% of the games are really worth anything... totally spammed with terrible games besides the "nintendo" make and a few others.

Tron im with you on those games. Im hoping they announce a North American release for Last Story on Wii but I have a suspician that it will become a Wii-U title. We also have Dragon Quest Online coming for wii which looks awesome! Maybe it's last Hurrah before Wii-U. Games I recommend if you haven't tried them on wii:

Fragile Dreams
Lost in Shadow
Tales of Symphonia "A New World"
NHL 2k10
Monster Hunter Tri
Sonic All Star Racing (awesome and a cheapy)
Im sure there are a few more I could recommend if anyone plays Sonic All Star Racing Contact me or Tron it would be a hoot to play online with ya :)

Not say that all the games of the WII is garbage.. but.. i work all day.. the last thing i want to do is move a controller around. I want to be old school lazy with a regular old controller. Also.. Wii is too kiddy for me. I tend to lean to more mature/bloody/violent games and nintendo in general obviously doesnt fit the type of game i dig.

I sometime laugh at what happened tho. Think about it The Gamecube was more powerful then the PS2 and Sony came out on top. Now the roles are reversed the Wii is still a Gamecube with little update while the PS3 is HD.

I doubt mistwalker would remake the last story for the wii u,that would mean more time and resources having it done in hd.The game was made specialy for the wii 'but if it doesn't make it to the u.s i'll import the europe edition instead.

Not this argument again. Heres the way i see it, If you play a game and you have fun doing it, who cares if the style is "kiddish" full of color and interesting characters, as opposed to most modern games who only use two different colors brown and green.  I have both a wii and a ps3, and i love both for different reasons. I love my ps3 because i play fighting games alot, and the scene for fighters is just not there on the wii, but the wii also provides me with amazing first party games. I also enjoy all the platformers the wii has, and there are many 3rd party games on the wii that are great and are not "kid" oriented. The No more heroes games are great, as is madworld. I feel that people who make the kiddy argument have not tried the wii out enough for themselves and are going off shit that other gamers say.

i got done with it, so i sold it.
been thinking about getting a new one though, since the price has dropped, plus, i want to play brawl.

^ yeah i sold my copy of brawl. I would have kept it if the online was better and played it every once in awhile. Since i play games like street fighter competitively playing smash is kind of frowned upon for being simplistic. Also they f*cked up brawl by adding the stupid trip feature.

LOTS OF FUN.

In response to the thread title - I'm still playing on the Wii. I came LTTP to this generation. I've been a gamer since the days of the Atari 2600 but mainly stopped playing (except on rare occasions) from about 2001 to 2009 while my kids were young. I have a Wii and an Xbox 360 now but the Wii gets a lot more use by me and the rest of the family.

Right now I'm waiting on my pre-order of The Last Story and I just recently picked up Xenoblade which I'm loving. My youngest daughter loves it too but her attention span on games is kinda short. A few weeks ago she was crazy about Metroid Prime 3 but only got maybe 10% complete before moving on to some kids online game.

When I can't get to the TV I'm playing through my old copy of Dragon Slayer on my laptop.

What's a Wii? Nintendo have been going downhill as a company since the SNES.
Well it was the sales leader this gen by a pretty large margin. And as far as the company goes they probably made more profit on just the balance board for Wii Fit than MS made off of Xbox, Xbox 360 and Kinect combined. Before I here "fanboy" screamed I own a 360 and a PS2.

Really if you're a fan of Nintendo's games there was probably more to love off Wii this gen than any other previous console (don't forget the Virtual Console and GameCube compatibility).
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: meka on August 07, 2012, 06:18:20 AM
Wii is the most profitable console of this gen is because there are a lot more "casual" gamers than "hardcore". The 3DS is a gimmick that was first tried in the 80s with the NES and SMS. Wii Fit is not a game and the virtual console is not the real thing, the original xbox can play all those games if you like emulators.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: Robknoxious1 on August 07, 2012, 07:46:59 AM
It's well known that the "casual" gamer was the key to Wii's success and profitability. I mentioned the balance board to simply illustrate how much $$$ Nintendo made compared to the other consoles this gen. A comment was made about Nintendo going downhill as a company. While the reference probably was aimed at the content more than the profitability, you can't deliver any content if you are out of business. A Turbografx site should know this better than most.

As far as content, there were plenty of quality Nintendo titles on the Wii (if you like Mario, Kirby, Zelda and Donkey Kong. Not everyone does.) Still does my Xbox 360 have more hardcore titles than my Wii. Yup. I still end up playing the Wii more though. Heck recently I've been playing my TG-16 more than 360. Go figure.

As far as the 3DS it may be a gimmick but Vita is not doing well whatever reason.

I'm only interested in the games, and when I compare the games that came out after the SNES to before I much prefer the latter, but your right that it you can not make the consumer happy then your stuffed.

I never bought a PS3/360, but I have a ton of Wii games, and I'm only a few hours into Xenoblade Chronicles.

I'd have to admit there are some good PS3/360 games, but not the popular ones. It's all generic sepia toned FPS. Or they throw in a few fantasy elements and call it an RPG.

The crap:quality ratio is bad on ALL CONSOLES, as far as I'm concerned. This doesn't mean the Wii doesn't offer a bunch of compelling games. Of course, if you are primarily interested in specific genres/trends (FPS), then I can see why the Xbox360/PS3 libraries are more compelling.

You know it's a little known fact that a person could get a lot more enjoyment out of a console once it's removed from the box and connected to a TV. There are plenty of truly great games for the Wii that could be enjoyed after this is accomplished.

Was there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't. Was the Wii trash to treasure ratio worse than other systems. Probably yes because of larger than average amount of "casual" gamers. Still there's this thing called the internet. Use it and just grab the great stuff.

I can't detect any sarcasm in that sentence.

I'd rather just play my Duo, the games for the Wii itself were mostly trash. It really pissed me off that I needed a disc to access Netflix, and the "virtual store" where you can download old games is a complete scam to charge extra money to the people who don't frequent forums like these.

Was there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't.

The Neo-Geo imo. Although I'm not going to sell my car to buy one.

The Turbo/Pc Engine has the least ratio of shit to good games. That's why we're on this forum.

In the effort to achieve peace, love and harmony:

Wii's "Netflix on a disc" was a work-around due to contractual issues. It was less-than-ideal, but the alternative would have been to WAIT EVEN LONGER before Netflix was available on Wii.

That's cool. I'm playing Dragon Slayer today and have been for a couple weeks when I have time. I also play Xenoblade when I can get to the TV.

Answering in order: Yeah. A lotta shovelware on Wii but that in no way makes the great games that was available less great. I use my Blu Ray player for Netflix but would rather use a disc on my Wii than have to pay for a gold account like my fellow Xbox 360 owners (just an example). As for the VC being a scam I would just say that while I'm not against emulators (I use one to play my old TG-16 CD's on my lap top) I don't think you can label the VC a scam for letting the legal copyright holder sell their games to those that would rather buy them for reasons of their own.

Was there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't.

The Neo-Geo imo. Although I'm not going to sell my car to buy one.
Fair enough though like you point out it was an expensive and comparatively niche console.

Look in the end people are gonna love and hate what they choose. They like something because they want to and the hate something because they want to. Most won't change their minds no matter what. They'd rather miss out on the stuff they might like than quit hating on it. Human Nature.

Sweet.

None of the updates need the CD. You can't update CDs. The first update was "you no longer need the CD". The most recent updated added a kids version of Netflix.

As for Netflix built into TVs, in all seriousness its probably better that you have it for a console or an Apple TV or something. All hardware eventually gets abandoned. Which do you think is going to get left out of the next Netflix update, the PS3 with its 63 million users or some random model of TV that only 10,000 people ever owned?

As for all the bullshit with people showing us their hardcore gamer badge by saying they hate the Wii so much they never turn it on...just give it a rest, seriously. That's one very worn out cliche at this point. There are H@rd3C0R3 mofos on every forum of the internet giving the same tired shit. We get it, now please shut up.

Last month my girlfriend and I beat New Super Mario Bros co-op for the second time, so I guess I'm still playing it.

BTW- For those with Netflix and a Wii, the newest Netflix update doesn't need the disc anymore.

Sweet.

None of the updates need the CD. You can't update CDs. The first update was "you no longer need the CD". The most recent updated added a kids version of Netflix.
I guess that's what I meant.  It was a Wii-update a while back that said you no longer need a disc to play netflix.  Woo.

Operation Rainfall nails the Trifecta with the announcement that Pandora's Tower, the third of the three titles that OR was trying to get released in North America is going to released this Spring by XSEED.

Good for them and good for Wii owners. The other two games were brilliant.

I decided the other day I would pick up Xenosaga, only to find out that a game less than a year old is already sold out in stores and nearly $100 on ebay.  Lame.

Yup, Xenoblade is already a hard to find game. I actually saw a copy of it today at a gamestop. Might want to check your local ones. Also I just finished playing Muramasa a week ago. The game was so awesome. I did both Kisuke and Momohime's story. I prefer Momo's story to Kisuke. The game is also beautiful. If you have a week def pick up this hidden gem

It actually sold over 350,000 copies in the US. For a game that had to be prodded to be published it sold very well and there's a lot of copies in circulation. http://www.vgchartz.com/game/42966/xenoblade-chronicles/USA/

I bought a wii not long after its launch... I wore that thing out the first year or so, but nowadays... its been probably 6 months since I fired it up and that was to play a gamecube game...

I'm right there with ya, I haven't even touched mine in ages. I do have a few TG games on it, Bomberman '93, Neutopia, Dragon Spirit and a couple of others, but I just don't really bother with the actual Wii anymore.

I surprised my kids with one right after launch.  I took the day off just to scour the town and find one for them.  Managed to stop at a Best Buy right as the truck pulled in with some.  Hooked it up and left it running for the kids to see when they walked in the door from school.  They loved it for about a few months then never turned it on again.  It sat until my mom (shes in her 60s) saw it and wanted to try Wii Fit, so I gave it to her.  Took it over her house, showed her how to work it and it's never been turned on again since then. It's been YEARS since it's been turned on.  Maybe I'll give her a call and see if she's still using it... lol

Lol yep that seems to be a common fate of the Wii, I wish there were more that kept me attached, it's the only Nintendo console I have that just doesn't get the love the rest do. Even my Gamecube gets more love, it probably helps I have the GB Player attachment installed (plugs into the bottom and you can use GB/GBC/GBA games to play on your TV, provided you have the disc that came with it). Wii just didn't have that particular charm that caught me from Nintendo consoles, sadly.

I did, but having picked up a GC component cable for a decent price last year, it's currently unplugged - WU plays Wii games just fine, and i miss the homebrew scene but that's about it.  also, didn't wanna bump the other thread but the TG16 games leaving VC (presumably over licensing issues) is always shitty to see, sucks for future generations but at least i'll have my physical stuff.

Can you imagine trying to amass a complete Wii collection? That would be absolute madness  8-[

I haven't used my Wii in forever.

In fact, we bought a new entertainment center, and I left my PS3 and 360 still hooked up, but actually opted to pack up the wii as I never use it.

Anyone else in this boat?

Been packed up. Now after reading this I might have to pull it out and play some Final Fantasy and Castlevania on it :-). The games for the Wii are alright but I'm not crazy about the controls, just like turning the stick sideways and playing platformers on it :-)

I think the controls work great for some games, like the Metroid Prime trilogy or No More Heroes, but they really do feel tacked-on and pointless in a lot of them. I 100% agree that turning the remote sideways for platformers is awesome, though... it feels like I'm playing a super-fancy NES :D

that was probably the best option to do for the wii. at least someones playing it now.

on another note i've got mixed feelings for a few emulators on the Wii.
Wiimednafen works nice but has issues
WiiEngine worked great for the titles that i had put on there and even got the cd games to work but only one game worked and it was the closest i've gotten to having the cd image emulated.
hugo-wii had some sound issues with some games but had incredible speed.

it feels incomplete in terms of hucards though and thats sad. but i can't really bitch because i just play the damn games.

I just found a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles on the cheap at a garage sale, so I booted up the old Wii.  For all the commotion that game caught about being really good, I am super meh about it thus far.  Probably will just use it as trade bait or something here in the future.

Yeah, Xenoblade wasn't very impressive to me, either. I can see how it appeals to a certain demographic would have then hyped it and wanted it to be released in the US, and that hype spread. I am not sad it was released here, but I myself wouldn't have been bothered if it had stayed in Japan.

Honestly with the WiiU being backwards compatable with Wii games I don't see any reason the Wii will continue in my set up once I get a WiiU.

So for now I just focus on getting some of the Wii games I am still missing in my library.

I have lots of games but I always seem to be missing some of the more mainstay games and oddities I feel are worth picking up.

Last weekend I was tempted to get "the calling" but at $30 I passed. I am missing most of the horror games for the Wii. Both silent hill games and a few others.

Only recently got the metal slug anthology for the Wii.

I don't do home brew as it is just a way to play emulate stuff and struck the built in OS of the system

I have like three GCs so having a Wii (with GC compatibility) isn't of any use either. Especially when I like to use the GBA player that the GC has available and the Wii can't do/use.

I would suspect that eventually the more "rare" and expensive Wii's are the early ones with GC comparability or maybe MAYBE the more recent mini Wiis that are striped down for their small size and that they are selling very poorly.

I might actually buy a new sealed Wii mini when they are n clearance for like $40. But at $99 new it is still not worth the money.

What I find kind of sad about the Wii Mini is that it only supports Composite Video on the AV out, no more component, S-Video or RGB. I wonder if the signals are still present on the chip or somewhere else on the PCB?

Due to the lack of online connectivity and SD card slots, there's no way to download the official Skyward Sword Update channel, so patching the "Song of the Hero glitch" isn't possible. Well, one USB (of two, but without ethernet adaptor compatibility) port is still there, so there might be a way to hack this thing?

That Wii Mini is severely handicapped.  I have actually never played a Wii, let alone a Wii U, and only a little bit of Game Cube.  Maybe I should get an old school Wii and start playing it.

The Wii has loads of fun games.  And the best part is that GS is really trying to clear out what ever they have left. This means some games are going for cheap. Like $2 cheap. Sure you still run into the occasional $30-54 dollar game but not to many and those are mostly the 1st party games like smash bros. Mario Galaxy and so forth.

At the moment I am trying to figure out any hidden gem horror games I still would like to pick up.  As the only two horror games I have for the Wii is

resident Evil (all of them including the light gun games)
Something mountain. I forget the name lol

I still want to pick up both silent hill games, the calling, and that port of the grudge game

Really wish some of the Japanies only horror games came out to NA.

I just found a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles on the cheap at a garage sale, so I booted up the old Wii.  For all the commotion that game caught about being really good, I am super meh about it thus far.  Probably will just use it as trade bait or something here in the future.

I was so ambivalent to both Xenoblade Chronicles and Last Story that I skipped Pandora's Tower altogether. Nice to see I'm not just crazy.

Also my Wii gets the most use as a soft-modded emulation machine. As far as I'm concerened it's a great way to enjoy translated roms from the comfort of my couch.

these are the ones I have from your suggestions.

Cursed Mountain
de Blob
Deadly Creatures
Dragon Quest & Swords: The Masked Queen and The Tower of Mirrors
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
Klonoa

I totally agree, i love all the cheap as dirt shooter collections and the soft Mod lets me play tons of Beats of Rage home-brews. The emulators are also good to let the little ones in your house try retro gaming without getting hands on the real consoles. Mame emulation is a bonus too

a nice piece of software that lets you play GC games of the HDD, lets you use (pretty much) any controller you want and can save to virtual mem cards.

Mine got benched. I can access my virtual console games like the Turbo and SNES games on my Wii U now. There are some games I own I plan to go back to (Fragile Dreams, Last Story, Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower, No More Heroes 2) but for now, it's on the sidelines.
I did hear there was someone who was hosting servers for Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and that's pretty cool. It's not enough for me to use my Wii regularly at this time though.

Got my Wii-U hooked up and was recently working on rainbowing NES Remix.  There's some stuff I want on WiiWare though, in particular Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth and Gradius Rebirth.  I don't love that I will have to go into Wii emulation mode to buy/play them though.  I do have the original Wii but we transferred stuff off if it to the Wii-U when we got it, so buying something for it now it seems silly.  I dunno!

I had too many unplayed Wii games, so a little while ago I sat down to start going through them. Man, so many of them are just not good. Or rather, they just don't compare to what's actually good.

Even top games like Mario Galaxy I thought too linear and boring. I didn't like either the collecting aspect or the camera, either.  Epic Mickey looked so cool, but meh, mediocre platformers at best. Same with Mushroom Men. TvC is just too busy, not my cup of tea. Pandora's Tower is a horribly put together action RPG that just tries to do too much. One by one I crossed off all the games until I was left with less than a dozen. At the height of my collectardation, I had probably 40-50 GC and Wii games combined. I know have only 18, though F-Zero GX will be #19 (could never get my last copy to work - I think it was resurfaced which killed the disc).

Here they are, the only good games on the two systems:

Gamecube

F-Zero GX (still missing)
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Star Wars: Rogue Leader
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2 (never got far in)

Wii

Boy and His Blob, A
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Ivy the Kiwi? (haven't go to yet, might be terrible, looks great though)
Last Story
Mario Kart Wii
Muramasa: Demon Blade
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Okami
Rayman Origins
Wii Sports (wife's insistence)
Wii Sports Resort (I was able to fit in Wii Sports disc into the other pocket of the box)

Not even all of these are amazing. If I had to get rid of them all, I'd only really miss Metroid Prime 1 & 2 (Rayman Origins is on PC, too).

It's not bad, but go into it with low expectations, it's a 3D Castlevania game after all, and a very simplistic (read: "shallow") fighting game, it's not gonna blow your socks off, but I enjoy it for the presentation, it's got some really good graphics and music, I'd say it's worth playing for the music alone!
Oh and, I'd also recommend changing the voices to Japanese...

It's worth a few playthroughs but you'll probably not be coming back to it after you beat the campaign with each character once or twice...

[Edit]
ONE MORE THING!!
Play with the Classic Controller... Enough said...

Man I was just playing castlevania rebirth and what a great game that is. The music already started off with the Genesis soundtrack of castlevania on the first stage following by really good music for the second and third stage. That's as far as I got so far but damn what a game. I love the key option to go to a different section of the stage.
If anyone has not picked up any of the konami remakes I highly recommend it

This thread is surreal because I just looked back and realized that I had posted in it back in 2011, which is strange to me because I think I had a Wii for about a month before I traded it to someone.

I keep wondering when this thread will finally die but some of you really enjoy this console. I always thought the scheme of downloading 8-bit nintendo and Turbo games would go the way of the sega channel, but the console has an almost cult following now. The only system that I ever owned for a shorter period of time was the gamecube, because I couldn't wrap my head around how stupid the design was, and the proprietary backwards-running laser.

...so yeah I think the Wii is dumb, and really dont like the art/branding/avatars.

It's like they hired the character designers for "Super Adventure Time" to compensate for the bad graphics. Also, I've never been more disappointed with the cover artwork of a game system in recent memory. N64 does not count as recent memory.

What I personally don't get is how can somebody hate on a console they have barely even played...

To be honest, I pretty much don't use my Wii for playing actual Wii games anymore (even though there are still quite a few Wii games that I want to play eventually) I just use it as an emulation machine, I've recently installed Retroarch on mine, and now I can play CPS1, CPS2 and Neo Geo on it using my Classic Controller Pro (which btw is probably the best controller Nintendo made since the SNES controller, minus the D-pad which is not as good as the one on the Wiimote itself or on their handhelds) and well, it works pretty well! It won't run every game, In fact, I think it runs less than half of the games, but the ones that it does run work pretty much flawlessly, but then again my Wii is outdated, perhaps it will run more games if I update it without somehow bricking it? But eh, I can play D&D Shadow over Mystara and Battle Circuit on it and they run pretty much perfectly! Not to mention the quality of the image is spectacular on my CRT! I can adjust the resolution in Retroarch so that it will run at the exact same resolution of the arcade and it looks great even through composite! But this finally convinced me to go and get Component cables for my Wii so that it will look even better and get rid of those rainbow patterns whenever there's dithering going on...

That's of course not to mention that both the Wii and the Game Cube have a s***load of really good games! I'm just not playing them anymore because I've already beaten most of them and I'd rather play TurboGrafx-16/CD through WiiMednafen on it instead (which btw is the best version of Mednafen I've ever used because I don't have to do stuff through command line or go out of my way to get a GUI that may or may not work, no, it simply just works you know what I mean? All I had to do was put the CD bios in the system folder and load my external HDD with ISOs and ROMs and then play them, it doesn't get any better than that...)

Please reread my post. I said that I OWNED one for about a month. I made no reference to the countless hours playing through it's trash library before taking one in trade.

To be honest, I pretty much don't use my Wii for playing actual Wii games anymore (even though there are still quite a few Wii games that I want to play eventually) I just use it as an emulation machine,

This is what pisses me off about the console. The emulation and "store" charges you $4.99 for games that you already have.

Again, half the games run under emulation. This is beyond a fail.

but the ones that it does run work pretty much flawlessly, but then again my Wii is outdated, perhaps it will run more games if I update it without somehow bricking it? I'm not convinced hooking a Wii up to a CRT would enjoy my experience at all. I have two PVM's in my office and it seems kind of redundant.

That's of course not to mention that both the Wii and the Game Cube have a s***load of really good games!

It's ok you can swear here. Shitload.

I'm just not playing them anymore because I've already beaten most of them and I'd rather play TurboGrafx-16/CD through WiiMednafen on it instead

Ok, that's the point. Right here. That the Wii is so shitty, that the only possible use for it is that you can play turbo games for it on a CRT. WHY NOT JUST PLAY TURBO.

(you know what I mean?  ...it doesn't get any better than that...)

Actually yeah it does. You basically said that the Wii is a useless pile of crap now that you don't play the games, and have resorted to using it for Turbo emulation. Through a PVM.

I have this PC Engine. I plug it in. I play it on my PVM. It's so many fewer steps.

WHY INTERNET WHY
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?

I think a "shitload" is an exaggeration for the Cube/Wii, as those libraries are not ... that great.  It's hit or miss, but mostly miss.

and this is coming from someone who got Wii and Cube both on Day 1 and spent countless hours trying to delude myself into saying oh they aren't bad.   I think I have played every Gamecube game.   While there are enough games to justify getting one, especially now, "a shitload of good games" is not how I'd describe it.   If you asked me which had more good games, Tiger handhelds, or the Cube, I'd have to stop and think about it, because it's that close.

I had this twilight period after the Wii launch where Cube games were worthless.  It let me play through large portions of the library that I never got to outside of rentals for basically nothing.

Even some of the "OMG GET IT" games like Viewtiful Joe lost their momentum like 45% of the way through.

Metroid Prime was barely good the first time.  It got worse.  The Wii one was a shit pile ruined by the gimmick controls.

StarFox on cube was a Zelda game with StarFox characters.

Cube was basically a slap in the face to Nintendo fans.  I don't get why people accept that shit as awesome.

people mostly use Cubes now for the GBA player.   It's great for that, honestly.   and for the RE1 remake.

and, as Michirin just demonstrated, people mostly use Wii for emulating other stuff.

If the most popular use of a machine is to use it to play another consoles stuff.... the console is a joke.

Wii betrayed us quite a few times.   Twilight Princess is easier than a drunk college chick that just got dumped.  We only saw Kid Icarus through Pit being in Brawl.   NiGHTS was a f*cking travesty.  Gimmick controls and increasingly dumb design ruined Skyward Sword, and made Prime 3 boring and tedious.

Some of the best Wii experiences are like

the Kirby anniversary pack.

... of old games

Again though, there were enough OK games to justify having one, but I can't see the "shitload" of good games thing.

I'd also have to say, setting up emulating PCE CD on a PC isn't really any more complicated than the Wii Homebrew channel crap.  The lack of big glowing PRESS HERE TO GAME buttons doesn't mean it's hard.

There's more presetup for Wii than there is just dropping the BIOS in the right folder, and loading a ROM or CD in an emulator on a PC.

It's not as bad as softmodding an Xbox, but it's still arguably more effort than just doing it on a computer.

Or what if you didn't have the games and only got to experience them in the first place because they were released on the Wii? Because that was exactly my case! If it wasn't for the Virtual Console I most likely wouldn't even know the TurboGrafx-16 even existed because I wasn't born back when it was a thing, same with Mega Drive, I wouldn't have bothered to play it had the games not been released on the Wii, and you know what? I'm an adamant defender of digital distribution of older games like the Virtual Console because not only does that mean that more people can experience those older games that they otherwise wouldn't, but also because at least that way I'm giving my money to the publishers, and in some cases the developers who own/made the game instead of some ebay randoes, but if you already owned the game, there's nobody forcing you to buy it again, if you wanna play it just go and play your own copy...

Besides, the Wii is the ONLY game system in which you can play Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, TurboGrafx-16/CD, NES AND Neo Geo legally on the same system, which pretty much makes it the best game system ever by default... (Except the Game Boy Advance is still No. 1 for being a handheld SNES-on-steroids)

I've recently installed Retroarch on mine, and now I can play CPS1, CPS2 and Neo Geo on it using my Classic Controller Pro (which btw is probably the best controller Nintendo made since the SNES controller, minus the D-pad which is not as good as the one on the Wiimote itself or on their handhelds) and well, it works pretty well! It won't run every game, In fact, I think it runs less than half of the games,

Again, half the games run under emulation. This is beyond a fail.
For those particular systems, which I hadn't tried to emulate before, and also, my Wii is outdated, an update could fix that... Everything else (like NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, MD, SMS, GG, NGPC, GCN, Sega CD, PCE, SuperGrafx, PCECD, PC-FX, WonderSwan/Colour) run the vast majority of the games pretty much flawlessly, and if that's a fail, then I don't know what a win is...

Because I don't have one? Because I can't afford one? Keep in mind that not everyone in the world has deep pockets but they still want to enjoy retro-gaming, and I'd rather pay $5 for Bonk's Adventure on my Wii than $25 for a loose HuCard, or just play Sapphire for free on WiiMednafen...
Not to mention that I can play it on the same system that I can play Super Mario World, Granada, Banjo Kazooie, Bloody Roar Primal Fury, Castlevania III (JP version with the better music) Samurai Shodown II, Muramasa the Demon Blade and Doom, on my CRT, with a controller in my hands, with little-to-no hassle in the configuration, and that is something that I personally can only get on my Wii, I know other people can do that on other systems, but I can't...

Also, I said in my post that there are still plenty of Wii games that I still want to play, but haven't gotten around to... Just because I'm not in a rush to play those games doesn't mean that the system is bad, it just means that the TurboGrafx is better...

I think a "shitload" is an exaggeration for the Cube/Wii, as those libraries are not ... that great.  It's hit or miss, but mostly miss.
Look, I know most of the library is shovelware, but the same thing can be said about the DS and PS2 (in fact, much more so for the DS which barely has any good games in it, even the first-party Nintendo stuff was s*** on the DS) but everyone raves about how great the PS2 and DS were... The PS2 I can see, but the DS? C'mon...
But the games that are good on the Wii and the Game Cube I think are really good... You see, the thing is that I REALLY like Nintendo games, and while the Zeldas weren't as good on the Wii, everything else was, especially Mario, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are like, my No. 2 favourite game of all time (I count them both as just one game because 2 is basically 1 with Yoshi and new stages) and the Wario games were really good on both, the Paper Mario games, Pikmin was great, I didn't care much for Metroid Prime either though but I really enjoyed Prime 3, No More Heroes was a lot of fun, House of the Dead Overkill was too, Resident Evil 4 is really good (btw, the Wii version is the definitive version, best controls), the RE remake too, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom was rather impressive considering it  runs in the same engine as UMvC3, but on the Wii and runs pretty smoothly, and it's a lot of fun too, all the Kirby games were really good, not just the collection, and the Punch Out remake is one of the best remakes ever, but Nintendo has a good track-record with remakes (Super Mario Allstars and Metroid Zero Mission come to mind), Excite Bots Trick Racing is one of the most fun racing games I've played, Donkey Kong Country Returns was great too... Look, I don't wanna just sit here naming games all day long okay?

I'd also have to say, setting up emulating PCE CD on a PC isn't really any more complicated than the Wii Homebrew channel crap.  The lack of big glowing PRESS HERE TO GAME buttons doesn't mean it's hard.

There's more presetup for Wii than there is just dropping the BIOS in the right folder, and loading a ROM or CD in an emulator on a PC.

It's not as bad as softmodding an Xbox, but it's still arguably more effort than just doing it on a computer.

Perhaps it is more effort for NES, SNES and GBA, but for everything else? I don't know what you're doing that I'm not but I have a MUCH easier time getting games to play on my Wii than on the PC...
For example, I still haven't managed to get a single Neo Geo game to run on my PC I tried WinKawaks and MAME, but nope! Nothing works... On my Wii, for the most reliability I use the Virtual Console, which has a lot of Neo Geo games, all of which run 100% flawlessly, but for the ones that aren't there I use Retroarch, and while a lot of games don't work in there I manage to at least get a few more that aren't on the VC that work...
As for PCE CD? I can use Ootake and that works fine, but Mednafen is supposedly more accurate, but it's a major pain in the arse to use on the PC, on the Wii though? Piece of cake! And the only problem I've ever ran into was in the intro of Asuka 120% Maxima Burning Fest where the text is in 512 pixel mode and the rest of the picture is in 256 pixel mode, well, the text gets rendered in 256 pixel mode as well, but otherwise the game runs pretty much perfectly, and then there's Ys IV, I tried to apply the translation patch on the PC, the text patch worked, but I couldn't get the dub patch to work no matter what, but then I found a pre-patched .wad file of the game for the Wii, to play in Virtual Console mode, and voila! I was playing Ys IV in English on my Wii, on my CRT TV! No hassle what-so-ever, it just worked!

And you know how I said that most of the CPS1 and CPS2 games don't work on Retroarch on the Wii? Well guess what? I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE PC!

I find it very hard to believe you wouldn't know what a TurboGrafx-16 is without a Wii.  I wouldn't give the Wii so much credit.  You know what a PC98 is without the Wii VC crap.  You likely would come across PCE just the same via the magic of the internet.

As for emulating, I don't see the point of your "legal" angle, really.   Sure, you can purchase digital copies from their VC.... but everything else you're doing is no different than the PC counterpart.   The fact you can rebuy games or get digital copies of 16 bit era games you never owned should not be what makes a machine like the wii the "best machine ever".

I don't disagree that the machines are great for letting you emulate crap, but like I said, if the best feature of a new console is the ability to play old stuff, that means it failed as a new console.

I've never had a problem getting PC emulating to work.  This may be because I grew up configuring DOS games to work with MIDI + controllers, so all of this shit is pretty much a joke in terms of complication.

Who said PS2 is great?   That thing was pretty disappointing too, and was the beginning of the end for a lot of franchises.

Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Castlevania.. they all started taking ugly turns on PS2.

For wii, the good games can basically be counted on two hands.   During the SNES days, the good *first party games* needed more than two hands.

These new machines don't have the killer first party libraries that we saw in the 16 bit era.   They are either playing it safe, or simply doing really dumb shit instead of making good stuff.

Why there is no plan to make Metroid with the Breath of the Wild engine is beyond me.    It seems like a no brainer.   That's the open world / exploration style that Metroid has needed since Super Metroid.

I probably would, but it would definitely take much longer, and I most likely wouldn't have cared about it as much...

I wasn't being too serious with that point, that's just a thing I like to point out, at this point in time, the Wii is still the ONLY system where you can play all of those things legally, yeah I know that means nothing, heck most of the games I play on it are pirated anyway, but still...

I don't disagree that the machines are great for letting you emulate crap, but like I said, if the best feature of a new console is the ability to play old stuff, that means it failed as a new console.
No, when the ONLY good feature of a new console is the ability to play old stuff, THEN it means it failed as a new console, but the Wii still has plenty of really good games that I and a lot of other people enjoyed a whole lot, it just so happens that what it does best is allow us to play a lot of old stuff in it on top of having all of those really good games, therefore it is FAR from a failure...

I've never had a problem getting PC emulating to work.  This may be because I grew up configuring DOS games to work with MIDI + controllers, so all of this shit is pretty much a joke in terms of complication.
I don't know if you're lucky or unlucky because of that, but I had it easy, my first PC was a Windows 98, and I never had to bother with command line until recently, and I think I already said enough about my luck (or lack there of) with emulators on the PC, unless they're absolutely amazing and I couldn't possibly run it well on my Wii (PPSSPP) then I'd just rather play stuff on my Wii, and playing on the TV helps, on the PC there are too many distractions...

Who said PS2 is great?   That thing was pretty disappointing too, and was the beginning of the end for a lot of franchises.

Umm, this is more of a discussion of "Old vs New" at this point... You know, I also like older games better, hence why I mostly just use my Wii to play them, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of good games on the Wii or other newer systems... The thing is that there's been an increase in the cost and the time it takes to make a good game with the increase in hardware horse-power, so they can't make as many great games now as they could back then...

Also, Castlevania started to suck on the N64, not on the PS2, and you know what system had a really good Castlevania? The Wii! ;3
Because they made it in 2D with classic gameplay and amazing music!

You're right about those franchises, but the PS2 is the absolute best in 3D gaming. It was before everything became brown and gray but after the ugliness of the 32/64 bit gen.

No contest on what's better, though. If I had to choose between 16 bit and anything later, I would in a heartbeat. But there's already a thread for that.

I don't know, the gimmicky controls and lack of some crucial titles, along with botched games like NiGHTS didn't do it any favors.   Were you not playing Wii at launch?  It was a pretty dumb launch, and took a while for the stupid gimmicks to go away.

You probably weren't playing DOS games.  DOS memory configuring is it's own special area of expertise.  and then companies  like OSI went and tried making their own memory managers and made it worse.

Not really.  Dragon Quest continued thriving after the 16 bit era, because they didn't f*ck with the formula.

They can make "as many great games" now.   They just need to start with making great games in the first place, instead of shitted up QTE laden games with excessive cutscenes and garbage gameplay.    If anything, they should be able to make *more* good games now.

This almost makes sense, except we had Symphony of the Night on PS1 to drown out the N64's dumbassed game.  PS2 is when all those really shitty ones came out, and then Lords of Shadow or whatever it was called on PS3 was probably the biggest pile of shit ever with regards to a Castlevania game.

I give the N64 game a free pass because that was in the "everyone is trying to be 3D" era, where most things sort of sucked.

Ocarina of Time sucked.

Imagine having never played or heard about the system before, going into Dracula X blind, in the middle of the 7th generation, expecting it to be either on-par with or worse than the SNES version, then having your mind blown so hard that you had to pick up the scattered pieces of your brain and skull off the walls afterwards... Yeah, had I not had that experience, which wouldn't have happened, at least in quite the same way, were it not for the Wii's VC, I don't think I'd have bothered to dig in deeper and wanted to see what else the system had to offer... Trust me, I know one too many people who just played Rondo of Blood and moved on from the system never to look back...

No, I took a few years to get my Wii, and when I did it already had a load of really good games that I wanted to play, and still had some stuff to look forward to!
Almost every system has a weak launch, early adopters are necessary, but I'll probably never be one of them, I'd rather get my systems later when I already know that they've got a lot of stuff that I want to play...

The thing is that the N64 Castlevania games came out after SotN, so it kinda makes perfect sense to say that the series started to suck on the N64... I don't know how you feel about the handheld games though, but personally, I've never been much of a fan of the Metroidvania style, I MUCH prefer the classic 'Vintagevania' style, SotN is nice, but I'll pick Castlevania Rebirth over it any day, and Rondo of Blood over everything else in the series...

The thing about the Wii launch is it was actually a good launch.    and then it just flopped on it's ass for awhile.  Trauma Center was a great launch game, and while TP was an overly easy piece of shit, it was at least an entertaining Zelda game.

There are a lot of great DOS era games.  It really depends on your gaming tastes though.  You don't strike me as a Wing Commander enthusiast, or a Might and Magic kind of person.

PSX and N64 were competing forces.   People were still playing and talking about Symphony of the Night after PS2 launched.    We also got Castlevania Chronicles on PS1, (after n64 game), and it was met with success despite being a port.   For what Castlevania 64 tried to do, it's not exactly bad.  It's just... not a Castlevania game.  I'd play it over Ocarina of Time.

Quote
Ha! No...

Honestly, Ocarina of Time sucks.   It sucked when it came out, and it still sucks now.   It forever ruined the pacing of Zelda and sent the series down the watered down toddler mode path it was on until BOTW finally unf*cked it nearly 20 years later.

Ignoring the camera woes of the era, everything combat related in that sucks.  You lock on, strafe around, and wait your turn to smack something.   That's it.   That's all you do.

It's garbage.  The only reason it was so critically acclaimed is dumbassed Nintendo fanboys at the time literally had no other action adventure game to play unless they wanted to pretend Quest 64 didn't suck.

Ocarina of Time is that average looking chick that has fat ugly friends, so everyone think's she is way hotter than she is.

and then she shows up with her cousins (playstation games), and everyone goes "fuuuuuck"

By OOTs release, Playstation was already set with Alundra, Brave Fencer Musashi (which is how a 3D Zelda SHOULD have been), Granstream Saga, and some other games that came out around or slightly after OOT that just made me wonder why people were jizzing about OOT.    Legend of Mana immediately comes to mind, followed by Vagrant Story, and Threads of Fate.

We even had other weirder action adventure games like Soul Reaver, Akuji the Heartless, Escape or die trying, Alone in the Dark....

f*ck Ocarina of Time.

Except for the Water Temple.   That shit ruled, and I enjoyed all of my friends in 5th grade having strokes trying to get through it alive.

while I played Parasite Eve.

Funny Granstream Saga was mentioned. I played it in the hope that it would be a good spiritual followup to Terranigma. But I was disappointed from the gameplay, which suffered from being ported to 3D graphics. The combat controls felt rather slow, stiff and thus unnatural when coming from the older games. The story is nice, but both the English as well as German dubbing for the animated cutscenes are breaking the athmosphere in a very unpleasant way - it's not even funny, it's just plain bad. It makes me wish there would be a way to have the Japanese audio along with English subtitles and English ingame text.

I wonder how this game would have turned out if the developers stuck with true and tested 2D overhead graphics.

Still, if someone like this game, I say what was written above is my personal opinion and should nobody hinder from giving Granstream Saga a try by themselves. Some may like the slow and methodical combat system for a good reason.

We had this thing called Magic Engine and you could play it on virtually any PCE/Turbo PC or linux box.  With WINDOWS 95. Then Mednafen. Then came the rasberry Pi and now you can stuff one on the armrest of your car and play it through the screen in your headrest.

Look, OK. I get it you discovered the Turbo through the Wii. That doesn't change any of the points made earlier, by me, or Arkhan. You're just trying to hit us with a bazooka-load of opinions, appearing in a wall of text, with one point that comes down to personal preference.

You should update your system hardware. This is the point here.

Ok, now we're getting to the root of whats happening here. Not having a Turbo is probably the most legit reason to own a Wii.

A lot of us have been playing these games since they were released in the 1990's, and many of us have been forced to part with some or all of our collections to make rent, bills, etc. and have instantaneously regretted it.

I can see, now why you own the Wii. For convenience, and emulation. That is probably the most legit reason to own a Wii and keep playing it... I can't see going over any of that consoles games more than once, it has the lowest replay value of any system I've owned...

And I just do all of my emulation on a PC so this just seems incredibly redundant.

If you really are running like 20 emulators on that thing you should update the firmware and Hot-Rod the Wii for emulation.

It's not without clunky early 3D flaws, but it was a rather pioneering effort considering when it came out.

There were other ones like Alundra 2 that smoothed things out a bit, but ... Alundra 2 had some other issues instead.

They all had garbage voice acting, lol

Been using my nes classic controller for playing rondo of blood on the tg16. The nes controller is very good for the tg16 games.
I did the same, works fine for Rondo. The only thing I'm missing are the turbo switches.
Quote
I also have used the Wiimote on the nes and with the settings I made the wiimote turn into the nes zapper so now I had the gun accessory and was playing duck hunt on the nes. It worked for hogans ally also
You used the Wiimote with an original NES as a Zappper substitute? Please let us know how you did this.
So I have the fce ultra menu with all the nes roms.
I went to duck hunt, started the game and hit the menu options on the fce ultra screen. Select the controller options and then you can select between the nes 2 controllers, 4 controllers, or zapper. Use the zapper option the go back and there you go. Point the wiimote like a gun and you can see the crosshairs on the screen

That's not using a Wiimote on an NES.

Have you tried selling your Wii with 5000 games on it yet? You should ask for $5000. That's less than a dollar per game!

That's of course not to mention that both the Wii and the Game Cube have a s***load of really good games!

Stop right there.

A bit off topic, but the rise of the whole "Gamecube is underrated" mantra is getting on my nerves.

I get the love for the Wii, it's a kickass emulation machine with some interesting motion games (Red Steel 2), fantastic mario games and it also helped keep mid-budget games alive during the ps360 era. Hell, it got me into the Turbografx.

The Gamecube has nothing special going for it. The first party was worse than the n64, the controller was worse, Nintendo farmed out their games with meh results, and the exclusives were just odd. Resident Evil 4 was pretty cool but that's really it. It didn't even have online.

Don't tell me Animal Crossing is good.

Resident Evil 4 was neat but marked the end of the Resident Evil being Resident Evil, so we should collectively hate it forever.

The Wii had a decent library sort of.  Just not a powerhouse library that you'd expect or hope for on a Nintendo machine.

Anyone who doesn't like the GC is clearly f*cked in the head. "Nothing special" my ASS. Have you ever played anything like Pac Man Vs? Odama? Have you seen F Zero in progressive scan? Have you used the Gameboy Player? A better pre-Wavebird wireless pad? A better bongo-controlled platformer than Jungle Beat? A better anime based wrestling game than Kinnikuman? Certainly not the PS2 one.

Have you used any CD/DVD system that had quicker load times? Many 1st party games have virtually none, loading faster than even many arcade games of the day.

And I'd love to hear how the Cube pad is worse the the N64. That should be a very interesting if very unpopular opinion. I rank the N64 pad one notch above 3DO. One notch above because the buttons are way better, but only one notch since great buttons are only uselful if the analog stick hasn't been broken and there very little chance of that if a kid under 12 has ever gotten his hands on it. The Cube pad on the other hand, when it comes to modern analog stuff, it's easily my favorite. Clearly it's ass for fighters or OG games but the triggers are very smooth and have a long pull. The d-pads have very little dead space (especially compared to N64 and DC, which were very bad in this area) and all the buttons actually line up with your thumbs when you're are holding it in the way it was meant to be held, which four generations of PlayStations still haven't done.

Not to mention, if anyone has ever bested NEC in the packaging department it would have been Nintendo with this design. The parts layout is just beautiful and reliability is as high as any disc based system I can think of.

To me the Gamecube was great hardware with a library that never did it for me because of all these holes in it's library that I don't really understand how they stayed empty.

I will admit there's still this satisfying feeling whenever I put a disc in it and press the power button.  The controller is sturdy.  Those triggers are awesome.  The GBA player is also a good time.

That f*cker can take a beating too.  I dropped mine once from I'd say a 6 or so foot drop, and it still works fine.  It didn't even crack the casing.

I just barely get into the games probably due to the severe lack of RPGs, because I can only get so excited by F Zero and Rogue Leader.

I think Rogue Leader was probably the game I played the most.

I wish Star Fox Adventures was what was used for Prime, because Prime sucked.    It did the same thing Ocarina of Time did to Zelda.  "lock on, strafe around, f*ck this is boring".

I enjoyed Tony Hawks Pro Morphball though.   That was a good distraction from the most obviously scripted enemy encounters and scan-stuff-because-its-the-gimmick shit in the game.   The visor gimmick wore off and got tedious so fast.

I remember renting Dave Mirra because I couldn't find anything better to play.   So I zoomed around as the Slim Jim guy, crashing into shit to garbage pop punk.

and THPS3.

It just lacked the first party shit I expected.   Wind Waker was dumb.  Rogue Leader was better than StarFox Assault.  Prime was dumb.  the  Mario games were .... yep.

Melee was great but... really wasn't that fun alone.

Eternal Darkness and the RE stuff ruled.

and the Metal Gear remake.

but like, where were all the sweet action games?

Beyond Good and Evil was basically it.

and Time Splitters 2 but again, that sucks if you're always playing alone.

Ok, thats a legit reason, if its a good DVD player, but who the f*ck in their right mind would go into a pawnshop and see a Wii and be like "Honey, this is a perfect DVD player for our living room!" I mean that's some serious insider knowledge.

I don't really have a point of reference for this, nor do I sit with a stopwatch and calculate the exact load times of DVD's on gaming consoles. If you have done this, I have no choice but to trust you. Sometimes, I get up and get popcorn or a beer if it takes awhile.

You must love the Neo Geo CD for this "feature"!

Really though, that was the reason Nintendo stuck with carts with the N64, even though everyone else had already moved on the discs. CDs can hold more memory and are much cheaper to produce than carts, but Nintendo thought it better to have fast load times. This is why they went with those mini-DVDs on the GCN instead of full-sized discs, because they have fast load times. You forget that you're even using disc-based media when playing.

Going with cartridges was part of the reason the N64 sucked.   Games cost more, sometimes the music blew compared to PS1 versions,

AND THEY HAD NO SPINE LABELS BECAUSE WHAT THE f*ck.

We're talking about the Cube, right? I never said it was a good DVD player. It literally cannot be a good DVD player because it takes 3" discs only, you f*cking herb. It's not just load times you have no reference point for, from what I can see. You really shouldn't make such declarative statements about things like consumer products you apparently have never touched. It's not like you said "I think it looks dumb"', it's that you specifically called out people who defended it as not knowing what they were taking about but in reality you don't even know it won't take 5" discs making it seem very unlikely that you've spent any decent time with one.

Game availability, as others have said, is terrible. This has been an issue ever since the SFC though. There are always fewer good Nintendo games with each generation. I don't know, N64 might have sucked even worse in that category though. Just because it didn't have 780 pieces of shovelware on top of the good stuff doesn't mean it's better than the Wii library. The crap doesn't matter. The good stuff is what matters.

RE: load times. You don't need a stop watch to notice that Gran Tursimo takes half a minute (on any PS, it doesn't matter, no technology can save us from loading, it's a human problem) and most of the games on Cube with Mario in the name go from the title screen to you doing something nearly as quick as a Gameboy. If you were around for PS1 then you know aaaaallllll about load times. GC is more like PCE or faster, at least with first party games. Activision or whoever usually had different priories, maybe because those games were usually multi platform and, load times would be closer to PS2. The small disc helps a lot though.

God, Luigi's Mansion is so cool. For some reason I can't get into the 3DS one.

Wave Race GC is super fun. Almost identical to the excellent N64 game but with much less shitty graphics making it a lot easier to enjoy. For me, anyway, since I'm not a massive fan of 3D games in general I never really enjoyed many of them until at least Dreamcast came around and could do a decent job of it.  WR is not quite as free wheeling as the Outrun 2 games but in the same vein and it helps to be able to draw some blue skies and whatever snd not have it look like Wolfenstien.

I'm not a huge Zelda guy (wouldn't want to be) but Wind Waker and Link's Awakening are far and above my favorites.

The Super Robot Wars on GC was bad. Not worthless, it's an interesting divergence (later ported to XB, bizzareely) but still bad. The Gundam game though, the Ace Pilot one, was surprisingly good.

The Game Cube controller is great and all for the Nintendo games, like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Zelda Wind Waker, but have you tried playing a fighting game other than Melee in it? (If so, it was probably Soul Calibur 2, btw best version because Link)
Everyone and their moms LOVES the Game Cube controller for Melee, I'm not that big into smash to begin with, I was back then, but mostly for the Nintendo Fangasm, which had already died down by the time I got to playing Brawl, I always found the gameplay to be too floaty and much less satisfying than a traditional fighter, now I know there's a lot of depth to Melee with the Wave-dashing and the L cancelling and stuff, but I'm FAR from a competitive fighting gamer, I just prefer traditional fighters because I think they're a LOT more fun than Smash...

Now Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Bloody Roar Primal Fury (which btw is WAY better than the PS1 Bloody Roar games) were probably the GCN games I've spent the most time with, but for these kinds of games the button layout of the cube is just dumb, and the D-pad's position is too awkward to use comfortably, I don't think I've ever had a worse experience playing fighting games, but you know what? I'd say the proper way to enjoy those games is on Nintendont on the Wii, which lets you play Game Cube games with the Wii Classic Controller Pro! Which I still say is the best controller Nintendo made since the SNES (not counting handhelds) because it is the natural evolution of the SNES controller with the D-pad, the sticks, the shoulder buttons and the face buttons are all in the correct place and layout! Granted the sticks aren't quite as good as the GCN analogue stick, but they get the job done perfectly well, and the D-pad is not quite as good as the SNES D-pad, or even on the Wiimote itself, but I've used a lot worse (on the Game Cube) I'd say it's about on-par with the PS1 D-pad, but with a proper cross shape...

Also, Zelda Wind Waker is one of the better 3D Zeldas, it's way WAY WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY better than Twilight Princess, that much is for sure, and because of its more cartoony art-style it aged like a fine wine~ (But not as well as 16 bit games)

I had the TvC one that was made for the game. It was Ok. I don't recommend either TvC or the Wii, so I can't really recommend the stick, either, but if you like the game, I guess it's worth getting. Fairly cheap as far as sticks go.

I don't know about that... I mean, I've only played like, 4 fighters on the cube, and the worst of them all was Soul Calibur 2, which is a pretty okay game... I think Bloody Roar Primal Fury might be the best, Either that or Capcom vs SNK 2, depends on my mood... Far from the best fighting selection in the world, but "s*** tier" is giving it way too little credit, even if all the other CGN fighters are rubbish, it still has 2 spectacular and 1 super-overrated but still pretty good fighters, and that should count for something...
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?

The only real problem with that is that it's not the ideal platform for those fighters.

Then again, I don't care for 3D fighters, so that only really leaves one good fighter, which is better elsewhere.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?

It's shit tier because the exclusives are whatever, and everything else is "why is this being played on a gamecube".

why do you bleep out the word shit.   just say shit.

"I only played 4 fighters on the cube" is like saying "I have played every fighter on the cube", and is my point really.

It's shit tier in terms of selection.    It's like going to Dairy Queen and being told they only have peanut buster parfaits.

They don't suck, but you're probably going to pissed anyways because you wanted a banana split or a blizzard.

It's kinda funny, because I said earlier that I had basically given up on console gaming after the PS1. I stand by this statement with the exception of the PSP, and then I just stopped paying attention again. And other than Josh's video about the load times of the Neo-Geo CD I wouldn't have known that it can take up to 30min to load a fight scene.

SO, call me ignorant, call me whatever regarding my lack of knowledge regarding the Gamecube. That's fine. No, I never really touched one. I remember playing that farm Sim ONCE with my neighbors in like 2003.  The Wii on the other hand, I'm just tired of... as has been apparent through my consistantly bad attitude on this thread.

And regarding me giving people shit for playing the gamecube... Well, I think its f*cking terrible. I'm glad you had a decent experience on it though.

Lol at the cube controller d-pad discussions.

Back then, I got myself one of those Hori Digital controllers that are shaped like SNES controllers and had very nice d-pads.

Since then, I'm using it for Soul Calibur II, Resident Evil 0 - 2, and the GameBoy Player.

Also does a fine job on the Wii RVL-001, the one that still had GC pad and mem card sockets.

Those who complain over tiny d-pads, were have you been in 2003 and why haven't you ordered the Hori pad from Japan when it was still cheap as chips?

Loading times suck.
Unless you can play a round of Space Invaders or Galaga while waiting for Ridge Racer to load.
Also, loading times aren't a thing of the past, have a look on Forza 4, the GTA games and especially Skyrim on Xbox 360 to relieve the rose tinted memories of going to the fridge one more time.

Looked up those Hori Pads on eBay. Damn, I missed the boat. $90+

I wouldn't mind a Hori N64 controller either but that's like $80+ too.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?

What if I tell you the Hori pads had been under 30$ including customs duty and all from your friendly import game shop back then?

Also, don't be too sad about the Hori N64 Mini pads. I got two of them some years ago when they were already expensive, yet still affordable for playing purposes (not just collecting). So I can tell you the N64 Hori pad has a good stick, but that's all about it. The placement of the d-pad is crammed. And the four shoulder buttons have the pivot point around where your index finger tip usually rests, which makes you press them in an uncomfortable way - e.g. you wish a Yakuza would have shortened your index fingers by one bone each. Yes, this is the controller secretly developed for Yakuza who still wished to play N64 when the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 were already released.
Also, you won't be able to count the many many times you will confuse L, R and the two Z shoulder buttons, making aiming and shooting in GoldenEye a pure joy to behold...
...not.

I was never into the import scene, so I don't even remember seeing any stores which carried imports. Also, the limited experience I have had with third-party controllers tells me that it's not worth taking a chance on.

Well, yeah, the local stores in Berlin didn't carried imports as well back then. But there was already a well established network of national mailorder and web stores that carried the hottest shit from Japan. Often with a slight premium attached to it (since they had to pay rent for their warehouse to store their stock, as well as import duties). But in a time where Paypal wasn't the norm and only very few Japanese sellers existed on Ebay, this was where good deals on otherwise uncommon games and hardware to be had.

If it is, do you have Baseball Stars 2 yet? If not then try it out! It's like, probably the best Baseball game I've ever played (note: I haven't played many Baseball games, but almost every other one I've played was rubbish)

So I got myself Super Smash Bros., F-Zero X and Alien Crush for the PAL Wii Virtual Console.

While the two N64 titles look as blocky as I remember them, they play pretty well. Emulation-wise, good thing the screen resolution has been upped to 480p, so the trademark anti-aliasing blur of the N64 isn't as hard on the eyes as it was back then. The background music has the usual issues of emulated N64 games, with slight stuttering when loading the next menu screen, level or area. But nothing gamebreaking - I've seen N64 emulators on Windows PC doing much, much worse in terms of crippling the music and placing ugly seams on semi-transparent 2D objects. Try PC emulation of games like GoldenEye 007 to see and hear with your own eyes and ears what I'm talking about.

Both F-Zero and Super Smash Bros. are PAL versions, so they run slightly slower than their NTSC counterparts and have slight horizontal black screen borders. But since they are decently optimized for 50 Hz, the difference isn't as much noticeable as when talking about non-optimized games - they'd look, feel and sound horrible. E.G. take a look at videos of Sonic 1 (Mega Drive PAL) and Castlevania 1 (NES PAL) to see a PAL conversion gone awfully wrong, Nintendo didn't bother to fix this for the Virtual Console release.

Turbografx-16/PCE games are NTSC 60 Hz all the way even on the PAL Wii Virtual Console - NICE!

I didn't noticed any input lag whatsoever on all these and the other VC games I got so far. Which is quite remarkable, cause usually I'm quite allergic to even the smallest of lag. Good job on that.

Super Smash Bros. character models are quite low on the poly count, noticeably lower than you know them from their original games. E.g. compare Smash Bros.' Donkey Kong, Super Mario and Link to their counterparts of DK64, SM64 or OOT. Made my head scratch why Nintendo did this in 1999 and still does make me continue scratching it 18 years later.
Occasionally, the Wii VC version of Smash Bros. may crap out sound wise, producing funny noises for both music and sound effects. Playing against Master Hand or resetting the game usually fixed this for me.

Super Smash Bros. does play well with a GameCube controller, familiar button layout to Melee. You need to press down the analog shoulder buttons all the way to the "click" for blocking, though. F-Zero X is better played with a Classic Controller Pro, due to the digital shoulder buttons make destroying opponents easier, since you need to double-tap them for tackles and spin attacks.

Devil's Crush is just Devil's Crush. Pure awesomeness. I'm glad I tried it! Nice graphics, good music, great level design and the gameplay has stood the test of time very well. The emulation is quite good, apart from the usual graphics change regarding the pentagram. Being able to save the gamestate anytime and continue playing another day is what I find very convenient. I used a NES classic controller attached to the Wiimote for this game.

EDIT: Corrected typos and added some doodads.

They did that so that the game could run smoother, higher-poly N64 games have a bit of a hard time keeping a good frame-rate, especially if you didn't have the expansion pak (or the game doesn't support it)

Is your Wii modded at all? If so, you should really try this N64 emulator called "Not64" if you haven't already, it's way better than the abandoned Wii64 project, I've been using it to play Banjo Kazooie for the first time, and I was surprised at how much I liked the game, as well as at how well it ran!
It's not perfect, the game can't render the backgrounds at the pause screens or whenever it's doing any screen-transitions, but it's pretty much on-point otherwise, and it doesn't get in the way of gameplay at all, and well, you won't get Banjo Kazooie (or any of the Rare games) on the Virtual Console for obvious reasons, so I'd say it's worth it for those!
But still, if you wanna play N64 on the Wii, get the games on Virtual Console if available, they're not gonna run better on this emulator than they will on the VC one...

Yeah, I guess you're right. Back in the day when playing SSB with in four player mode, I noticed there was quite a slowdown on wider stages like Fox' stage. Still, I wonder how other N64 games managed to pull off having more than four mid-to-high poly count detailed characters on screen in a detailed level environment, without excessive slowdown. Smash Bros. stages with all the flat 2D sprite elements are sparse on detail as they are. And its blocky and pointy characters wouldn't look out of place in Quake 1. Donkey Kong's model has such sharp edges, he could double as a Shambler.

I played Banjo Kazooie/Tooie on N64, and later on the Xbox 360. That emulation turned out rather nice, highly recommended, and Rare even managed to retroactively squeeze in the Stop 'N' Swop feature for both games and Nuts and Bolts.

My Wii isn't modded. Yet.
I might change this once Nintendo eventually closes down the VC storefront for the Wii.

I guess the next VC games I'm going for will be Final Soldier and Wave Race 64.

Yeah, I'm pretty glad, too.

Yesterday I downloaded Wave Race 64 and Yoshi's Story from the VC shop.

I already own Wave Race as a cartridge, but the thought of playing it in 480p over a component video signal and with a good controller in my hands won me over. Thank goodness the emulation is as perfect as it gets. All BGM and sounds are spot on. For an early N64 game, the graphics hold up surprisingly well. I usually play as Dave Mariner, with custom settings (first bar reduced, second and third increased), to make him steer well, have lots of top speed and ram opponents from their jet skis. Still plays as good as I remember it, and a Game Cube controller works best since all you need is the A-button and the control stick.

GOOD.

GOOD.

GOOD.

GOOD.

MAXIMUM POWER!!!

VROOOM!

I wonder if I'm still able to do the stunt mode challenge for Dolphin mode.

Yoshi's Story is new to me. I was surprised how good the 2D graphics look in 480p, since I was expecting a blurry mess from being bloated up from the original 240p or so. Nope, all fine, and there's no blurry filter, thanks. So music and graphics wise done well, gameplay wise this is a bit awkward, with needing a certain count of fruit to beat a level instead of walking through an exit. Yoshi controls slippery, especially when jumping and doing the double jump. Still playable, but I miss the times of pixel perfect jumping and momentum mechanics like in SMB1/3 and SMW1. This is best played with a GC controller, too.

Yoshi's Story was definitely aimed at a younger audience. I've played a good deal of it, but it's not a great platformer.  It's no Super Mario 64. If you're looking for another contender from big N, try Yoshi's Island on SNES. It can at least hold its own as a Mario title.

Idk if it's on the VC, but have you tried Chameleon Twist for N64? It's short, but I found it quite engaging and fairly unique. I'd recommend it over Yoshi Story, at least.

The shift to 3D was necessary, but it's definitely harder to find good platformers on the N64 than SNES. The controls are never as tight as they were in the 8 and 16-bit eras.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: ClodBuster on August 10, 2017, 08:11:46 PM
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't tried Chameleon Twist yet, but saw it in magazines back then, when people were still waiting for Banjo Kazooie to be released after having experienced Super Mario 64.

Speaking of, Super Mario 64 still nails 3D platformer controls. There's no other game like it afterwards that has the same good feel of control and momentum to me. Even Super Mario Sunshine feels inferior in that regard, which is especially noticeable in the tough stages where you have no access to the hover nozzle.

I played Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island around 2002 or so and managed to beat the main game, but only got access to a few bonus levels. Good game, but if I had to pick between this and Super Mario World 1, my choice would be SMW1.

SMW is my favorite 2D Mario.

I completely agree with you on Sunshine. I wanted to like it so badly after playing SM64 and Galaxy. I don't understand how the controls got worse after the great job of its predecessor.
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: Michirin9801 on August 13, 2017, 06:37:40 AM
While I agree that Sunshine doesn't control as well as SM64 or Galaxy, I still think it's an amazing game which controls really well! I missed the long-jump, but the spin-jump and the slide almost made up for that and wall-jumping is even better in Sunshine than it already was in 64... The thing about sunshine is that when you master the controls you can do some really crazy stuff just like in SM64! Well, almost...

If you wanna see a Mario game which actually has bad controls, try Super Mario 64 DS, that one is unbearable to me... Shame too because if that game had better controls it would have been better than the original N64 game in every way... I think they should have waited until the Nintendo 3DS to remake SM64, I mean, at least the 3DS has an analogue stick, and it would have had amazing graphics! I mean, try to imagine Super Mario 64 with graphics on the same level as 3D land...

Also, SMW is my favourite game of all time...

I agree, Sunshine isn't broken by any means.

Still playing Yoshi's Story and have beaten the game for the first time yesterday. I noticed some slight BGM stutter during loading between different scenes, but nothing too bad. I'm glad there are so many levels and secrets you won't see at the first playthrough, so you have to beat the game several times to experience everything it has to offer.

For shits and giggles, I downloaded Mario Kart 64 yesterday. The only advantage compared to the N64 original version is the lack of fuzzyness screen resolution wise. But since the original had pretty clear visuals due to flat textures anyway, there isn't much to write home about it. Although the 480p resolutions helps for 4-player splitscreen multiplayer. I noticed the sound effects in the menu as well as when points are counted in championship mode are slightly distorted. Everything else played fine so far. Of course, no ghost saving feature available since the Wii Virtual Console lacks N64 controller pack (memory card) emulation.

I also got my hands on Alien Crush. After having played Devil's Crush, I can't hide a little bit of disappointment over the predecessor graphics and gameplay wise. Still, Alien Crush is a more than just decent Pinball game with designs shamelessly ripped from the Alien franchise - which is a good thing! Oh, and I can not praise enough the smooth plunger pull animation, rawr.

Would you believe that I still haven't played Alien Crush? I probably should, but the thing is that every pinball game ever just looks (and probably sounds) like s*** in comparison to Devil's Crush >w>';
I guess I'm just spoiled...
Title: Re: Who's still playing their Wii?
Post by: ClodBuster on August 14, 2017, 10:28:29 PM
I'm definitely spoiled by Devil's Crush. There's so much going on at the screen at once, amazing. Also, having a three-tier playfield and so many bonus rounds is great. The only other game I know of that has more playfields (four) is Pinball Revenge of the Gator on the GameBoy, and this even has three different bonus rounds to discover.

I'm fine with Alien Crush changing screens between the two playfields instead of scrolling like in Devil's Crush, since I'm used to the changing screen behaviour from Revenge of the Gator.

I'd suggest you should have a look at Youtube for Alien Crush and decide for yourself if it is worth to you paying 600 Nintendo points (or even going for a Huey).

Or watch this Game Sack episode about Naxat's pinball games.

If you like pinball games, then yes, I'd go for Alien Crush without hesitation. The music is quite nice and, as ClodBuster said, the screen flipping is not a problem (I don't begrudge folks who prefer scrolling, but this game, IMHO, plays fine, especially on a small screen like the TurboExpress).

The intricate, creepy visual themes (Giger! + "light-hearted" bonus screens) + superb music create an atmosphere that really makes  Alien Crush a slam dunk for me (I never tire of the visuals), but I reckon it could wear thin if you are not as smitten with Giger...

...and, with pinball, you spend a long time looking at and listening to the playfield (I have never been as smitten by the themes and atmosphere in Time Cruise, for example...my reaction to Alien/Devil's Crush is more visceral).

The CRUNCH and CRACK of alien skulls getting smacked around is pretty satisfying, too.

Oh I'm sure Alien Crush is a fine game, I really should play it sooner or later, the thing is getting around to it >w>';
I like Pinball games okay, but I rarely go out of my way to play them... One that I liked was Mario Pinball Land on the GBA which is pretty weird because Mario turns into the Pinball and you have to knock him around dozens and dozens of (static) playfields, it has some really nice-looking pre-rendered graphics though! That one is worth a play for Pinball fans, but still, Devil's Crush is really the only one that I keep coming back to...

Pinball of the Dead on GBA was pretty decent, too. Even though I no longer own it (Gredler has it now) Revenge of the Gator is good for a GB game. Even though I haven't played it in over 20 years, Crue Ball was a blast, even if mostly for the music.

DragnMasterDan told me that the Wii store is still operational (I was in disbelief) over the summer.

I never got the Konami rebirth version of Gradius, so I’m going to get that.

I have Castlevania Rebirth (I bought it when it was released) and its fun.

I can’t believe the Wii store is still operational.

So...the Wii lives.

Only until 2019... I'm just as surprised as you that it's lasted this long, especially when you consider how quickly Nintendo usually drops support for their previous console once the next one comes out...
But yeah, unless you wanna go the pirate route, you can only get Wii Virtual Console and Wiiware games for the next year or so, and then BLAM! It's dead...
Pretty sad too, the Wii has by far the best Virtual Console out of any other Nintendo system, perhaps even the best selection of retro-games in a digital store in general...

I actually agree, getting a hacked Wii (on accident, honest!) has been a really cool discovery for me.  I got to try out TONS of the VC and WiiWare games that I pretty much ignored for most of the Wii's life span. :)

If at all possible, I'd suggest you hook your Wii up to a CRT, being 480i and all the Wii image is kinda crap on HDTVs, but it looks AMAZING on a CRT! Best of all, the composite signal isn't rubbish like it was on the Game Cube...
