Title: Bubble Bobble
Post by: soop on February 06, 2012, 01:49:03 AM
I've always thought it was a shame this was never ported the the Engine.  There's a thread here: http://www.retrocollect.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1948 where a guy is suggesting a new version which adds in 4 players, a level editor etc.

How hard would this be to write, and what would be the best approach?

I mean the sprites should be freely available, and there's no doubt the PCE could handle it.  The difficulty would be the hidden mechanics, such as the route of the bubbles and all the triggers, but these are all available in one form or another.

I just think it would be ultra sweet to have this on a Hu Card.

OldRover was working on this at one point like 94 years ago.

It would be f*ck-all easy to write Bubble Bobble.

The basic game is nothing.  It's just got a jillion levels.  It would be a whole hell of a lot easier than Atlantean, thats for sure.

lol

What language are PCE games written in anyway?  C?

C/6502 assembly.

Bubble Bobble could probably be done in C with little issue.

I put it aside after the Brandon Cobb debacle. It will stay aside for now. If Arkhan ever releases Squirrel 3.0, I'll take it back up again. In the meantime, I have too many other things already on my plate.

nat, when Cobb approached me about being his pet project, he was more interested in the fact that I was doing an unmarketable fan conversion of a copyrighted game (Bubble Bobble) than anything else... only because it was intended for hucard.

What does he have to do with Bubble Bobble, though? Did he claim he created it or something?

Basically he was pee-pantsing because the work someone else was doing wasn't something he could rub his Super Fighter Teamsack all over and profit from.

and then there's all the pretentious BS he spews when he talks about it anyways.

"Oh look at me , I'm the best, I did it first, I do this, I do that, I'm so awesome, I'll do huCards the best because I'm pro".

shut up bitch!

We did it first! =3

BURN DOWN THE COBBWEBB.

yeah something like that.

then he rides your work's wave of glory to the top of Mt. Circle Jerk where he talks to himself about how great he is.

BUBLE BOBBLE.

THE STORY OF MICHAEL BUBLE.

Heheh

I dunno if the original Japanese version had the English
"NOW IT IS THE BEGINING OF FANTASTIC JOURNEY"   But I hope it did.  I love that.

*edit* wait, I mean ""NOW,IT IS BEGINNING OF A FANTASTIC STORY!! LET'S MAKE A JOURNEY TO THE CAVE OF MONSTERS! GOOD LUCK!"

BUBLE BOBBLE.

THE STORY OF MICHAEL BUBLE.

The game would suck if that were the case. I'm glad it is about bubble breathing dragons instead!

I would love to have the complete trilogy available. Bubble Symphony would be nice too!

At this point I'm hoping someone pops up offering to make it... or even better, they have made it :D

I am working on a port.
I have started a year ago, now I am converting the remaining code in C++.
I have translated in C++ around the 50% of the main CPU code, slave CPU and MCU code is alredy converted and working(tested on my emulator/simulator).
For the audio part I have used a different method: I have written a specific emulator to extract the data sent to the sound chips.
There is still a lot to do, the C++ translation is only an intermediate step...

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you are working in C++? Is it simply your most familiar language?

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you are working in C++? Is it simply your most familiar language?

For various reasons, for example it is possible to test and analyze the code with my emulator/simulator(written in C++) or, in the future, to compile a preliminary version in C with HuC.
However, the final code will be in assembly.

Wow, this is great news!

May I ask which version it's based on?

And I know it's far too early for questions like this...  But I'll throw it out there; would it be possible to insert code for a 2p GT linkup?  I know there's not exactly a lot of GT owners in the world, but I wonder how hard it would be.  I guess Bomberman '93 has the code.

I want to inform you that the project is still alive even if progresses slowly.
I am currently completing the preparatory work for the assembly conversion.
Now I have to choose the format: HuCard or CD?
I'm also considering the possibility of a SuperGrafx exclusive.
I know that many will not like this choice but thanks to the second background and more VRAM the code is simpler.
Title: Re: Bubble Bobble
Post by: spenoza on April 28, 2013, 04:03:58 AM
Well, SGX only would have the result that most would have to use emulators to play it. If at all possible I would urge Hucard rather than CD (even though distributing it becomes more problematic) and not SGX only. CD distribution is an easier distro method, but Aetherbyte is working on HuCard hardware and the GameOfYou flash card makes it pretty easy to get a ROM onto a working system. You could always sell a ROM file the way some folks sell ebooks or MP3 files.

Of course, if you wanted it to be as accurate as possible you could go SGX only at first, and then maybe spend a little more time to make a regular version. You'll notice that Parasol Stars manages to have the level tiles fly away at the end of a level while the background remains, so it is certainly possible.

These are my opinions, but it's up to you what you want to do, of course.
Title: Re: Bubble Bobble
Post by: Arkhan on April 28, 2013, 08:55:32 AM
I see no reason why Bubble Bobble should be a Super Grafx exclusive, if it's a port of the arcade one or NES one.

Thanks for the update!

How about a Super HuCard like Darius Plus and Darius Alpha where the game would be playable on regular hardware but with enhanced gameplay if played on a SuperGrafx?  Although for ease of distrution (and also for being much cheaper than creating HuCards), I would have to recommend a CD release?

Of course, this begs the question of whether a CD release could take advantage of the SuperGrafx hardware.  I would assume so, but I have no clue.

This is pretty cool.  Glad I found this thread.  My preference, if anyone cares, is the HuCard over CD-ROM.
Title: Re: Bubble Bobble
Post by: ParanoiaDragon on April 28, 2013, 08:08:33 PM
I'm not sure when Aetherbyte will have Hucards ready, & maybe neither do they(?).  Maybe they're already ready, & are just being hush hush :D  In any case, I see no reason why the game couldn't be pixel pefect & be on a cart.  However, as stated before, CD is easier for now.  If you do CD, I'd highly recommend you do a straight arcade port, & an enhanced mode.  For the enhanced mode, you could add some redbook versions of the tunes, & could probably use updated sprites/tile lifted from other Bubble Bobble games.  Then for the music, you could have 3 options for the player to choose from, chip tunes, redbook of the original arcade audio, & some arranged versions of the tunes that switch up maybe every 10 stages, & have this selectable perhaps in an options screen.

But, maybe this is just me dreaming! :)

STATUS: Whilst a HuCARD would be nice, I can't help but dream of a CD release with the OPTION to play PSG chiptunes and Redbook! That would be truly marvelous. YOUR PATH HAS BEEN CHOSEN—clearly CD-ROM is the medium of the future...

Good to hear this is still going.

Unless you have no desire for a physical release, my vote is for SuperCD format (no SGX).  Hueys drive up cost and a SGX requirement would limit your audience, all for no real purpose.

This is music to my pants.  Trouser jazz.

I too would prefer a Hu Card release, because of that bootlegger guy selling shit, and also so I'd be able to play on my GT.

However, the most important important thing to me are:
256 x 224 resolution (shouldn't be a problem)
accurate bubble background flow
accurate secrets

As long as it's accurate as possible, I'd go for any format necessary, but I would prefer Hu Card over SCD/SGX.

But yeah, trouser jazz :D

I would also prefer a Hu Card release just to see the original PCE format kick ass. But we all understand that CD is the easier format to handle. Definitely not on the Supergrafx since this isnt a game that would really show what it could do.
But at the end of the day, whatever format is chosen would be cool with me, as long as there is Bubble Bobble on PCE!

The tune is catchy I wonder why this was skipped as a release for the PCE seeing as the NES had a port

How long till we mortals get to play it on the PCE / TG16?

Any one got a ETA?

Nintendo didn't allow third party companies to develop games for other systems. They would have stopped doing business with Taito if they did a port.

Taito developped games for the PCE. And third party editors such as NEC Avenue also used to convert Sega or Taito games for the PCE ;)

Fair enough. Still learning the history. I know Nintendo did bully a lot of companies from releasing games developed for them onto other systems though. ;)

And that bullying did have some major effects, but it didn't stop everyone, and I think it was more effective in the US than in Japan. Hell, Hudson continue to develop for Nintendo even as they were a co-conspirator with the PC Engine.

I'm sure it's because Nintendo knew Hudson would release a swarm of killer bees into their office I they tried to mess with them. They had a bee in their logo for a reason...

You're doing this in HuC? How's that working out? Old Rov and Arkhan had some speed up routines/ideas that they used for HuC - if it comes to that.

Are you going to be using Squirrel for the sound engine/fx?

In some places a biscuit is synonymous with a cookie. But while traditional American biscuits are known for fat content (lard and/or butter), they are also pretty high on white flour, which is, glycemically, not too far from refined sugar.

Ok, I know those expressions are a clichĂ©d clichĂ© of a clichĂ©....but I am not familiar with the "leccy" adjective....help me out.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.html)

In the States, we'd say something like (I don't smoke make tobacco): "Now for a (nice, long) drag on my cigarette."

At least, that's what older folks (and I) might say. I don't know if smokers today use the verb "drag" too often. They should, as far as I'm concerned.

Back on topic: BUBBLE BOBBLE!!!!

If nobody is willing to provide a proper Red Book soundtrack, and if aladar is willing/capable to code dual PSG/Red Book playback, I will gladly create (with my brothers, daughters, cats and son) an a capela+rendition of the Bubble Bobble tunes. No, I'm not joking. PM me.

Bobble.

Seriously fantastic.

You know I eagerly await the next phase in the project: where you include the option for classic mode (as seen thus far) as well as "Hudson World", where sprites are modified and updated (but use original color palette to avoid any headaches for you).

So, my modest (ha!) proposal:
Bub --> Coryoon (green)
Bob --> Coryoon (blue)
Bubble Buster --> Gray Bomber (Bomberman)
Coily--> Bonk /PC Genjin
Hullaballoon --> JJ/Jeff
Willy Whistle --> Takahashi / Master Higgins
Stoner --> Gyudes (kool skeleton enemy from Neutopia)
Beluga --> Princess Tomato

Etc.

Although many of us would love Red Book + PSG tune options on a CD-ROM, I think this project is being coded as a HuCARD.

I still like the cover, though, regardless.

When it would become a HU Card (who can make self made HU Cards around here ?) I would change the front cover, no problem  8). I would still make the manual but instead of of the spine card / back cover I would make a HU Card case spine side & a round sticker for the backside of a HU Card case.

Dude, you take all the time you need to get this to a point that makes you happy with your work. Whenever you decide to share it with us, I will be grateful. I'm so impressed already with the work you've done. I hope when you are finished with this project you'll take up something original, or get involved with one of the other homebrew devs or teams here on the forums. You clearly have the skills and patience to do good work.

That's still a lot left to do, but given the massive progress you've made, I'm certain you'll do great. Are you considering doing some original project development on the PCE or assisting some translation teams with hacking/programming when this project is done? It certainly looks like you have the necessary skills.

OK, I have a couple questions about this... Are you recreating everything from scratch? How have you sussed out all the enemy patterns and behaviors? Is the original arcade the primary source or one of the later ports?

I hope the end result is very hack-able. It would be awesome to be able to create modified versions of the game to create all sorts of user-generated content.
Title: Re: Bubble Bobble

The arcade is the only source, I have reverse engineered the coin-op and deeply studied the code.
The Z80 code is translated in the HuC6280 code but not in a mechanical way otherwise is too slow and big.
Every piece of code is redesigned to behave exactly as the original but with the speed and compactness of a code written with the HuC6280 in mind.
So the enemies behavior is perfectly reproduced, even the bugs!
In the future I will release the source code so everyone can mod it.

Excellent work! I look forward to seeing the finished game.  :)

You're a better man than I ... I got bored and gave up part way through when I started to disassemble Atari's Tempest.

I got further with SNK's Alpha Mission (many years ago) and have a working emulation (that's nowhere near as good as today's Mame) ... but for a programmer, doing this sort of thing has to be a real labor-of-love for a particular game.

Thanks for bringing Bubble Bobble to the PCE!

The color number limits are well within the PCE's capabilities and the colors in emulated screen shots are 9-bit, even if the shade values might be slightly different, they are staggered the same.

Ah yes, the old reductio ad absurdum. Putting aside for a moment that I'm not a mod and have no policing powers whatsoever, I never indicated nobody should discuss stuff. "An update on this would be amazing..." is not discussion. It's poking someone to see if they'll respond, which could be perceived as annoying. And I'm not trying to pick on just you. I think it's an annoying habit in general. We're basically the one group who is probably more excited about Aladar's project than any other. Do you think he's just gonna forget about us and never let us know it's done and playable or something?

Are you writing a music engine or using something already out there? Just curious, since this kinda came up in a recent thread. And are you going to convert the music yourself or have someone redo them for you?

Don't be fooled by the TODO list, in fact it is what is missing and not what to do.
There is still a lot to do: clean and optimize the code, reorganize the data, fix various things, etc.

I will convert the music myself, for the engine I have not decided yet.

PCEAS v3.22 by Tomaitheous ;)
It is simple and I like the @ operator and the use of square brackets for the indirection.
I hate the use of + and - for the local labels... and breaks the consistency!

I'm really sorry but I got tired (again) and so not much progress in the last six months.
The project is still alive but don't hold your breath...

That's ok, we all appreciate the time and effort you've put in :)  The only thing I would ask is that if you ever did decide to give up on it, maybe you could release your work for someone else to finish?

Other than that though, I've waited this long, I can wait more.

After coding an engine and converting all assets it quite difficult to continue and you loose steam.I'd like to see this completed too though.

The absence of this title on the PC Engine has always been a bizarre gap, in my mind. Taito did so many other titles, including questionable ones like Rastan Saga II. The lack of Bubble Bobble and also the original Rastan sort of confounds me, though I guess Rastan isn't a particularly long game and might be considered too short.
