Title: Grelox (Zillion inspired)
Post by: sunteam_paul on November 18, 2017, 03:21:44 AM
Along with plans for an MSX version (slightly different gameplay and graphics), I've been tinkering with a Windows Grelox. I'm aiming for a sort of Master System feel and it is (obviously) inspired by the brilliant Zillion.

Here's the first bit of progress:

so, make it sound like a touchtone phone with downs.

I have a SMS PSG vst, so I could do something.   I think I still have the project file.   Or I can just redo the song.

Here's some floaty orbs I added a few days ago.

All the main structure of the game is working now. Making maps is easy enough, but the main hurdle is coming up with more varied enemy types so that not everything is a patrolling, shooting thing.

That looks great!  I love that the character here seems a lot more nimble than Zillion's cast.

BTW, Zillion was one of my favorites growing up - I must've beat that game like 500 times bitd. It was just a notch below Phantasy Star, Dragons Trap and RType in my list of essential SMS games, so great choice for inspiration.

Nice work! I might change that "computer read" stinger at the end of the computer sequence though, it's a bit grating!

Yeah it's just a temp. It's hard to find a good source of Master System sound effects to sample.

Agreed—nimble and a rapid slashing weapon...very kool.

GRELOX
OGRE XL
LX GORE

...wants to be a PCE game!

I'm finishing off another game before I go deeper into this one. But I'll post when I do (or follow /sunteamretro on facebook).

'Tis very cute and would work great on turbob with that lovely line scroll parallax.

Quadrithiliot was a way for me to learn a bit of Gamemaker. I've not forgotten about it, but Grelox as a thing will take priority as it's been an idea for a lot longer....and making attack waves for a shooter is very, very tedious work.

I have more art for other levels and at least one cool looking boss. I think the weapon system would maybe better if it were a little more conventional so I need to rethink that. And some things depend if some art I have gets relocated for some other things that I cannot mention because I don't know if those things are things yet or might not be things later.

Oh, and those flowers at the bottom, and some of the enemies were originally drawn for the PCE Joust clone we were going to do years ago.

We got sidetracked with other games.  It was my idea, like... 6 years ago?

It was going to be what happened after Atlantean, but then I started working on Inferno ,and it fell by the wayside.

There's nothing saying it couldn't happen, or that we couldn't just reuse the art for a different game.

I can lower the hit box on them so there's less air walking.

Excellent!

I have a few small changes for you to implement ASAP:

(1) instead of a platformer, our hero flies around and shoots things
(2) press button a to shoot forward, button b flips hero around to shoot backwards
(3) change title screen to read “Living on a Grelox”
(4) insert Jon Bovi MIDI tunes

Otherwise, everything in the video is magnificent!

:)

I really like the look of some of the little things. They way the character moves is nice and the little speech bubble thing when turning off a computer is cute.

Since I don't know much about game maker what are you using for some of the ai?way points?

Depends. Some have coded random movement, others interact with invisible control objects on the map to change direction. I need to work on more enemy types so I might have an 'aggro range' set up for some in future.
