Title: 98Note adapter hardware video is Up! (PC-98 Paradise)
Post by: kazekiri on April 15, 2021, 08:22:32 AM
After a few years taking a break, I finally decided to get back to reviewing NEC PC-88 games on Youtube. This time I'm doing an RPG that we all know and love on our Turbo. I compare the PC-88 version to the Turbo version several times in the video. Hope you guys like it.

Pretty cool - thanks for sharing.  The provided tunes are okay, but I like how you can play CDs instead.

I reviewed the second game as well.
Please check it out if you ever wanted to know about all the crazy stuff that happens in the sequel that we didn't get in English. (Spoiler warning included.)

Oh, we are! Keep it up, I've been enjoying the Basement Bros come back. Always thorough and I learning something new everytime. It's great not to watch some jackass yell at his laptop camera from their moms house with a wall of game behind them :)

Great to hear it! Yeah, we've had a bit of extra time lately to make videos, but each one is still pretty time consuming. I should be able to make another soon.

Very cool, I love the packaging on those old PC-88/98 games as well.  You were paying a lot back then but it definitely felt like you were getting your moneys worth out of them though.

Hey guys. This time I made a video about a game called Mirrors for the NEC PC-88 CD-ROM. The CD drive for this system is the same drive as the PC Engine.
Not a directly turbo-related video, but hope you find it interesting. Thanks!

That was pretty cool for ancient 8-bit CD Rom games, and kind of reminded me of JB Harold. Would love to see the Marty version someday, it does look fun!

Thanks for the upload, great work like always!

Thanks for watching! The graphics do, indeed, have sort of a JB Harold vibe, don't they? The similarities pretty much end there though.
I believe the FM Towns version of this game will run on the Marty (if you have a mouse). Haven't actually tried it with my Marty though (I think it's at my parents' house, lol).

One of the best things is getting new Basement Bros videos!  This one is really incredible and it's amazing how secretive this game seemed to be.  I wonder if the MSX version is a little more accessible for players.  Like they aren't total jerks expecting you to find all of the holes/doors by checking every pixel, lol.  Still really cool to see that you suffered for all of us to enjoy!

Can't wait for the next one!

I haven't played all the way through the MSX version, but yeah it looks like it might be a little better, with the more clearly marked secret passageways, and the fact that the enemies get knocked back when you attack them. I should really play all the way through that one too someday.

So glad to hear you enjoy our videos! I have another one for you today. Here's the sequel, XZR II. The game that later became Exile on the Turbo!

I just finished up the xzr videos; 'tis good fun seeing how they started out before becoming the Exile I know.  I like how the hidden forest passage was removed (except for a short trip to find Yuko) but it would've been nice if they removed a bit less of the other bits and not shortened the game up so much.

Yeah, it really is a shame how short Exile is. Otherwise, it is a near-perfect TGCD game.
LOL, I like how you called Rumi "Yuko". I assume that is a reference to her voice actress Minaguchi Yuko, right?

Nah, I'm not clever enough to come up with anything like that.  I was referencing how Yuko (from Valis) is hiding in the woods (on the path to the lost sheep) in the Turbob version; she does quick costume changes in and out of her school uniform.

Yeah. Ys 3 for PC-88 is actually really impressive!

Oh is that lady in Exile supposed to be Yuko from Valis? I never noticed that. I kind of wondered why that random lady in the town has a face illustration, and why she's so unnecessarily cute. Guess now I know why.

An Actraiser port on PC-88 would've been terrible! The music would have been fine but the graphics and gameplay would have been nearly insufferable for sure.

37 minute intro.... ouch.  How long on average does it take to play through each scenario?  I assume at least a couple hours, so you'd be introduced to characters that you wouldn't be seeing again for several days, further assuming you only game for an hour or two a day (like me).  It's also unfortunate that they sold it as a two part epic, only to drop support for the PC-88 and not make the second half for it.

Still, it's a neato looking game.  One day I hope to play through it on PCE (both halves), but it appears the moonrunes and unconventional design make it unlikely that I'll be able to beat them.

What a kook.

Yeah kind of unfortunate there is no PC-88 version of the second Burai, but to be fair the first part puts a pretty good cap on the story with only a few minor conflicts unresolved. The second one really feels more like a true follow-up and "sequel" rather than an essential 2nd half of the story. Also, I've actually been a PC-98 player since even before I started PC-88 so I don't mind playing the second one on the 98 instead. Right now the only issue is my PC-98 is in the U.S. and I'm trying to decide whether I want to bring it back here to where I live in Tokyo or buy a new PC-98 instead.

It took me quite a few days to get through all the scenarios. I'd say each scenario took me at least 2 hours of play time. The actual ground you have to cover in each isn't much, but you do have to do a lot of grinding in each one.

As for the PCE Burai versions, like I mentioned in the video, 2 is soooo much better than 1. Just by looking at the covers you would never guess how superior the 2nd is. The PCE version of Burai 1 really feels like Riverhill Soft just got a crack team of developers together who didn't know much about developing for the hardware, whereas the second feels like it was made by seasoned PCE pros. I just finished 2 on PCE and it was awesome... aside from maybe the final dungeon. Highly recommend just skipping straight to the 2nd game for those who don't mind struggling through the 'runes.

Thanks for watching, as always!

I do enjoy your vids! I only knew of Rusty after I was messing with the PC-98 emu and did a search for games and Rusty came up as a recommended title (I was mainly looking for Thunder Force). After watching your vids on the 88 and 98, I feel I can live vicariously through you and save myself the hassle of getting real hardware :) Keep up the solid work! I envy your free time you must have that allows you to attempt a 1cc AFTER you already played and beat it.

Thanks. Yeah, if there's anything I have plenty of right now it's spare time. Gotta enjoy it while I can. Playing Rusty over and over again was good times... though I'd be lying if I said it didn't involve the occasional utterance of certain four-letter words.  :-$

I'm finally catching up with these great vids.  Please keep 'em coming!

I really like the cute and colorful world of Tatsugeki! Mix.  The dark and 'serious' look of Rusty is quite nice, of course, but I like that they went such a different route to better contrast and not have it look like a slapdash 'bargain' release.  Such money grabs often look like shitty remixes of the source material, where you gain nothing by playing them instead of replaying the first game.

Mario Bros. Special is rather interesting.  It looks rather clunky (especially that slowdown) but it looks kinda fun too.  I hope you can snag a few of the other Hudson made Nintendo games, as that was a fun watch.

I'm caught up now.  :pcgs:

Castlevania looks pretty nice, especially the fancy packaging.  Overall it's great looking; a few areas are kinda bland and not much better than the NES game (moreso in colors than anything), but others are miles better in every way.

The packaging for Xak II is also cool and unique.  It's fun seeing so much of Xak II, even if it does lean heavy on Ys (even adding projectiles like Ys II), and has a few warts.  I don't recall thinking the PCE game was broken, but I'm easily entertained so don't mind me.

Noice.  I've only played the PSP versions of the gagharv trilogy, so it's great seeing the earlier ones.  The PC-98 one is great, of course, and look like something that'd be at home on the PCE, but the uniqueness of the Saturn version has a certain charm too.

As always, 'twas a fun watch.  I hope you someday get tear of vermillion and song of the ocean.  :pcgs:

Yep. I was surprised it worked. I was half expecting the PC-88 wouldn't be able to provide power to all of those devices through the keyboard port or something like that would prevent it from working.

Your entire PC-88 Paradise series really is fantastic. I can't quite bring myself to go down the retro PC collection rabbit hole, but each video nearly convinces me to. So grateful to be able to experience each of these pieces of gaming history vicariously through you!

Go to the hell, fucker!

That was a fun episode.  It looks okay but sounds awesome, and I wish more games would let you move the torch around like that and eventually give you items that either last indefinitely or light the whole dungeon; it gets tedious buying tons of torches in games like Dragon Slayer 2.  Also, I loved your cable / adapter spaghetti; it ain't elegant, but if it works it works.

Continuing The Legend of Heroes series on PC-98, here's "A Tear of Vermilion". The game was later remade on Windows and PSP. The original is completely different though, so let's see what was changed!

I like how it looks (it ain't dated! .... said the guy that hasn't moved past PCE) and those FM and MIDI tunes are frickin' fantastic.  As a completionist goofball, I'd probably try to bang through all of the side quests and switch between team members to try and max them all out.   :pcgs:

Of course I love the old school look of it too (or I wouldn't be making these videos), but man I gotta say it looks pretty old for 1996. I distinctly remember playing it in 2004 and saying, "Man I can't believe this is from 1996. It feels way older than that." But that being said, it's kind of a moot point when I already love playing games from way back in 1986 as well. As long as the game is fun and nice to look at (and listen too) it doesn't really matter when it was made, does it?

Yeah, by '96 a lot of the gaming world was all about polygons and stuff, but I'm alot like Necro and never really moved past the 16-bit era of graphics, lol. I still thought Final Fantasy III (yeah, I know 6), and like Xanadu I&II looked brilliant back then.

This was a great episode, I look forward to the next one! <3

Haha. Yeah. He actually says "Oh my god!" and "Hey boy!" constantly in katakana. The way I read it in the video is how I imagine "Rock'n Rock" saying it. Kind of wish I could have done a funnier voice more different from my usual one though.

I like the cute funkiness of the boss characters, and I'd love it if more RPGs had puzzley bits for getting money (or at least items) instead of just grinding away, killing beasties.  That definitely looks like another fun one.

Also, who doesn't enjoy a nice cold glass of Caka?  =P~

I know what it's like, man. I finished Legend of Heroes V back in 2002-2003, so it was like "There. Done! I've conquered the game and don't need to ever play through it again." But then when I actually played through it again 20 years later for the video there was so much about it that I didn't remember accurately. I think I literally made up one of my favorite anecdotes about the game: "There's a cave that gets built up as a big dungeon but then it's just one room with a chest!" Never happened. I couldn't find that cave in the game. It doesn't exist.

Makes me wonder how many other games I played decades ago that I don't actually remember accurately.

I'm finally all caught up!

Fray looks quite good and compares nicely to the PCE version with which I'm familiar.  The town music sounds close to the PCE's, and that's one of favorite parts of the whole game, but the platform jumping is also similar, and that's just fricking terrible; it's caused soooo many rage quits from me, particularly at the falling logs.  Also, it unfortunately looks like the msx missed out on a strip show from the S&M whip boss...   :-\"

Scheme looks.... um, interesting?  The basic gameplay and design look good, but it also looks unneccesarily difficult, with vague objectives, shoddy controls, and questionable hit detection.  With some polish, though, I bet it'd be pretty darn great, especially if the obvious "borrowing" from other games was turned into more original designs.

The platforming in Fray for both PCE and the original is terrible in its own unique way depending on which version you play. But, yes, both are terrible.

The Scheme isn't that difficult, and the controls and hit detection are great. Are you perhaps referring to the terrible sequel "Wanderers from Super Scheme" instead? Because then I agree completely with your assessment.

Anyway, here's Farland 5:

I'm catching up a bit.

Zeliard looks like a pretty neato game, though the tough as nails platforming would make me rage quit or at least give me an ulcer.  I could handle the grinding and mazey layouts (with maps from the interwebs anyhow), but that platforming is likely beyond my meager skills; I commend you for powering through.  The voices are good fun too; they're rough as hell but I'd have thought them bad ass for the 80s, and I agree that the tunes are quite pleasant as well.

Also, I'm glad you mentioned Adol.  Early on, I was thinking "Hey, look, it's everyone's favorite ginger adventurer!", and him leaving damp panties in his wake is totally on brand.

Yeah, I can see how it can be confusing. We've strayed pretty far from our original intended format where the three of us would all regularly post our own videos to the channel. At most times through the channel's history, only one of us was actively making videos at a time. Right now we're lucky that my brother Neo-Alec is actually working on Neo Geo videos pretty actively and we should see a few trickling out over the next few months (hopefully).

Thanks! I'm gonna try to do Farland 8 yet before calling it quits with that series for a while.

In the meantime I've finished up another series. Here's another game that was released on our beloved Turbo! Of course the PCE version is shown near the end of the video. How does it compare to the PC-98 original?

There was one last Farland Story game that wasn't for PC-98. Did they manage to make a decent Farland Story game on Windows 95? Let's find out!

Here's a quick video on a neat little PC-98 accessory that I happened to pick up.
