Title: PC Engine GT - Controller Board
Post by: tawy on May 01, 2021, 05:53:30 AM
Hello,

Quote
I am new with this piece of hardware and i just bought a GT, the controller board have been corroded by a leaked capacitor (the carbon traces of the turbo switches have been literrally eaten by the liquid).
I have repaired the board, it is now fully fonctionnal but I want some information...

I am working on a clone and i found this forum where turbokon have done one.
I am near the end of my final product, I want to do like him, make it work without the BU5782K.
I want to make front side of the PCB look like the original PCB, big ground plane, VCC with big traces, vias in replacement of the carbon bridges and the back with the 2 chips needed if no BU5782K installed and a removable connector, not needed but cleaner.

3 versions of the boards are available.

1- plug and play (no comlink and auto screen shutdown) 25? (https://www.pcenginefans.com/forum/index.php?topic=23590.msg525043#msg525043)
(https://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2022/04/10//mini_22041006192523267717861901.jpg) (https://www.casimages.com/i/22041006192523267717861901.jpg.html) (https://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2022/04/10//mini_22041006192423267717861900.jpg) (https://www.casimages.com/i/22041006192423267717861900.jpg.html)

2- like the first one, but with external controller mod 35? (https://www.pcenginefans.com/forum/index.php?topic=23590.msg525182#msg525182)

3- blank 10? (https://www.pcenginefans.com/forum/index.php?topic=23590.msg525733#msg525733)

thank you ;)

board updated, only jack and speaker connector are missing.
every component are now populated, i will find the pinout by myself if nobody answers, i have to open my pcegt to continuity check...

Very cool! Nice to have an option when the controller board is damaged.

I don't have the pinout unfortunately, there is so little technical info out there for this console.

board finished.
i've added a little cool stuff on the back of the PCB, an RGB Breakout connector, for those who want to LCD/RGB mod the PCEGT. i can add a RGB amp with a THS7314 too... all that unused space give me ideas...

@MasterofBiscuits, thank you, i will find the pinout...
i need to print this board, check if everything fit on my pcegt and go for panelization. another version of the board will come after. the one with 74hc163 and 74hc157 and comlink disabled.
i also have to find some design to put on the PCB :D the hudson bee needs to be somewhere...

Heh, that's pretty cool.  I'm a real dummy when it comes to technical stuff, but I sure do appreciate the Bonk outline and GT logo on the pcb.   :pcgs:

thank you, but you can congratulate me when i receive the pcb and mount all components on the fresh pcb, for now, i dont know if everything fits and work :D
i did find a new design to put on the back : star parodier. every pc engine character (-pc genjin) are on the same picture :)

this version of the board is not very interesting, removing the chip and put it on a new one is not noob friendly.
when i have to do the new one, with the 74hc163 and 74hc157, it will be plug and play.

i wanted to fill all the blank space with a big picture, it's perfect :D

glad to see that my work interest people :)
pcegt opened, minor correction made, continuity check done.
@Keith, i did use your schematic to do what i needed to do :
https://www.pcenginefans.com/forum/index.php?topic=23503.msg523412#msg523412

I can share the pinout for the controller board, it follows the controller line, minus the 2 for the speakers and 2 for comlink :
1 : VCC
2 : HU6280 22
3 : HU6280 24
4 : HU6280 25
5 : HU6280 26
6 : HU6280 31
7 : HU6280 32
8 : timeout disable ?
9 : comlink ?
10 : GND
11 : spk1
12 : spk2

every line has a resistor between the chip and the pin, doing a test with a motherboard standing up is not easy :)

@necromancer & @keith, i think you can help me doing something on my gt, i did a lcddrv mod on it (for now it fits my needs, i dont need more if i cant "integer scale" the video). do you know how to adjust the brightness of the screen using the external wheel ?

I think it is possible to put a 3.5 IPS screen with VGA input. The PC Engine have RGB + Hsync and Vsync, needed for vga and used (i think) on some external video hdmi output for pcengine.
It will be a cheaper solution for a great screen. Those screen drivers board use 12V instead of 5, but a DC-DC step up converter can be use. and maybe a hw hack can be made to input 5V on the driver board. the component around the DC input seems to be voltage regulators. nothing uses 12V, RTD2660 is 3.3/5V powered and the ips screen too :
aliexpress.com/item/4000543740241.html

i'm pretty sure the connector i have desolder on my GT (CN201) use RGB line + Hsync and Vsync. if this is the case, a plug and play mod can be done, with just a little pcb to make.

Sorry, I only know how to wire up the 3.5" composite screen to work with the Contrast dial. I've only done 1 LCDdriver install and it was the older revision with no option for the brightness to be controlled with the contrast dial.

Controller board made. it fits perfectly ;)
I have made a mistake with button 1 and 2 on the plug and play version, this first batch of need a little rerouting to work like you can see on the pictures.
If someone need one, i can sell a "faulty PCB" or 15€ totally plug and play with all component soldered and the modification to invert BUT1 and BUT2 to its original way.

I also made a PCB of the first model, the clone of the original board. I can sell it for 5€, you'll need to unsolder every component of the original board to transfert it to this new one.
With every component soldered (without the principal chip BU5782K), i can sell one for 12€ one PCB.

I am waiting for the audio jack and speaker connector to finish the boards.

If anyone want a gold ENIG version of the PCB with everything corrected, let me know and i will make for those who are interested.
they will cost something like 20€ for the plug and play version.

These look amazing!  I like that you used actual pads instead of the carbon trace stuff for the turbo switches, that was one of the big issues I had with mine not working correctly previously.

Good job!
The comlynx isn't working any more on your new board?
Do you have the reference to order to complete your board?

I think carbon traces are used for a good reason. Maybe to avoid corrosion and have a better conductivity with the carbon pads, and yes, the pcb looks good, i'm pretty proud of it :)
the engineers of those consoles certainly knew that some of the components will suffer of the time. they were betting on a lifetime of a few years, having some carbon traces not working and leaked capacitor after 30 years is not much of a surprise...

on my original controller board, the CC800 capacitor leaked all over the PCB and the carbon traces of the turbo switch button 1 just disappear with some traces around the cap (the ones with carbon bridges). the liquid from a cap + carbon = copper destroyed  :bonkthis:

@bdoi
Yes, its the component to make a PCEngine 1P controller, no surprises :
47k 8P4R x2 or 0603 x8
1SS187 SOT23 package x1
74HC163 SOP16 packagex1
74HC157 SOP16 package x1
1N4148WT SOD523 package x4 (maybe not necessary, only needed if you want to do a external controller mod)
FPC FFC Flat Cable+Connector 12P
CC800 > 47uF 6.3v cap
C800 > 10nF 0805 cap

the 0603/8P4R and sod523 are tiny, i could use another package resistors/diodes but thoses ones looks better and fits well around the HC157.

Awesome work - put me down for one complete board!

Will you be making the gerbers available? I'm just getting into PCB design and this would be a cool project to look at.

i will not put the gerber available. it is not difficult to do it, but it took me some time and i know if i release the gerber people will sell them.
that is the reason why i sell them not too expensive. the next version of the pcb will have my signature on it, CC800+C800 changed to a single cap, button 1 & 2 corrected.
if you want info about pcb design i can help you, on the beginning i designed a pcb board as i would on photoshop, but if you want to do it right, you have to do the schematics first, if you follow your schematics and have the right dimensions of your board, doing the traces is easy, eagle pcb (and every pcb design tool) have an 'autoroute' function that can help you a lot.
in fact, if you copy a schematics of a video game console on eagle (or any hardware known schematics), redesign a PCB board on your needs and use the autoroute function, you can do a custom console with the real hardware pretty easily.

i am waiting for the finals components, 2 connectors only :-/

I understand, I don't blame you for that at all as I could see someone making and selling them on Ebay!

I have made a few PCBs, mostly simple ones (I've done my own RGB amp as I use a lot of them and I got tired of having to buy them) and it was a lot of fun. So I have a grip on the process of schematic -> PCB and using vias and track layouts, but at a basic level. Maybe I will have a go at my own version. How do you go about measuring the locations of buttons etc? Do you use a vernier scale?

This is the funny part :)
I just use a scanner. You can import a image file ans use it as a template on your pcb tool. I scan the PCB board with all the component, but it you want a perfect 1:1 you'll have to remove everything or the scan will be a little bit blurry.
but with a blurry picture and a ruler, you can have a convincing clone :)

@tawy

Hi,

Are these still for sale? I have imported a handful of the GTs in from Japan and one of the controller boards is toast.

Battery leaked all over the board and I started to clean it with IPA and all the carbon traces decided to come off.

https://ibb.co/Gn3s63B
https://ibb.co/BBy0S5z

Also on the off chance you don't have a spare d pad button you would cosider selling too?

What are the costs with the comlink shipped to the UK?

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who bought me boards.
I have done a few new batches revision to make them easier to produce and are more reliable for the customer.

The first version (green) have the option for external controller mod and can only be connected on the ffc connector
The second version have no external controller mod anymore and no diode. no mistake can be made with the tiny SOD523 diodes  I produced blue ones and soldered some of of them with the ffc cable directly to the PCB, it works well, tested OK, but i m working blind... i don't like it.
The last version is the same but this time i will solder a FFC connector. they are black and look cool :)

Impressive bit of work Tawy.

What is your intention with this project, other than producing them for your person GT? Are you planning on selling them?

Cheers!
Good to know you're out there making and selling them. I'll have to inspect the boards on my GT's and see if they need replacing.

Repairing your actual original board is of course the best solution, my boards are for those who have no other alternative. like him :

I'm still making these, my last post is not so old...
I sell them on ebay (more expensive because of the fees) but it's the old version.
You can PM me when you want if you need one, and you'll get the last revision with the cool silkscreen :)

I've updated the board with a new function, it's now compatible with an external controller !
It's almost plug and play, you have to remove the tuner connector and replace it with this mini din8 controller connector for japanese controller.
I've put a little 3D printed ring to make it looks likes just you can see below.
The little half rounded PCB is used to block the connector in place on the shell.
Some solder is needed on the connector and the little PCB, when is place you'll need to melt a little bit the solder and the connector is well fixed to the shell.

This new board is 30€ 35€ (connector more expensive now and time consuming) instead of the 20€ for the one without external controller mod.

This is lovely work!

Allow me to ask a quesiton that can help me in troubleshooting my dead speaker...
Which are the speakers connections here?

I guess it is a mixdown of left and right because we have a mono speaker...
Which pin is + and which ping is -?

I think 12 should be - because I see continuity with ground
11 should be + but what is its route?

Thanks!

speakers on every handheld are not ground connected and there is no polarity, you can connected it to either side
it's pin 11 and 12 (the leftmost ones).
good luck.

Ok my mind is now blown :O

Do you happen to know which is the pinout for the 3.5mm speaker on the PCE GT?
I tried both an aliexpress 3.5mm female plug and a game gear one (with different pin numbers, strange) but both give me great earbud audio and zero speaker sound :/
Title: Re: PC Engine GT - Controller Board (updated with external controller mod)
Post by: tawy on November 25, 2022, 05:08:17 AM
the game gear jack connector is the good one. you have to check the 3 pins on the end of the connector and follow the traces :

when jack not connected, the middle pin is shorted to a pin and sound goes to the speaker
when jack IS connected, the middle pin is shorted to the other pin and sound goes to the jack earphone.

it works as a switch.

It was the damned flat connector from controller to mainboard :D

Thanks for your help.
Can I ask your opinion on this, if you have time?
Your controller board knowledge can surely shed a light!

Hello, new version available.
I had these since a long time now but i've just tested with real components and they working just as expected, i can sell them knowing they will fulfill their purpose.

Blank 1:1 clone : 10€
Not totally blank when shipped, I put the 47u electrolytic cap, a FFC cable and connector on the package, you have to populate the PCB by yourself
I tried to respect the design of the original board, the components are better aligned and the back of the board have a RGB HVsync breakout. If you want the ffc connectors+cables to plug the video signal connector from the motherboard, add 2€.
You need to remove the components from your old broken controller board and implant it on this new board.
Hot air desoldering skill needed (for the main chip).

The second picture shows you how it will look like if do you it right (jack and speaker connectors are missing, but it works without it.

Hello, PM answered.

I did not test every function of the external controller port but I can tell you by having feedback from differents customer that is :
- ok with a classic 2 buttons pad (tested myself)
- ok with a 6 buttons pad with strange behavior when street fighter is on a everdrive (i dont have a 6 buttons controller to test)
- ok with a multitap, if you are crazy, you can play bomberman on a 2.4" screen with 5 friends :D (tested with 2x 2buttons controllers only).
- ok with blueretro and a bluetooth controller on 6 buttons mode, and blueretro allows you to play with 5 controller connected to a single unit.

The hardware of the PC Engine GT is the same as the Core.
The controller board I made have the same components as a classic 2 buttons controller, the same schematics is used.
4 diodes are here to bypass conflict between the board and the external controller connector.

I think external controller mod could be useful coupled with a external A/V mod. The screen is small, ok to play alone, but 2 dudes on the same 3.5 screen could be difficult.

Meant to thank you @tawy for the board I got (maybe 2 years ago)... unfortunately my handheld has other issues (I think I need to replace capacitors). But for the "couple of minutes" the board worked flawlessly!
