That's really amazing that Chou Aniki is coming out here. It seems the Virtual Console has proved a twofold over the nonbelievers: Japanese AND CD games! :D

I think its safe to say that anything's realistically possible now for VC releases. Pretty much everything the naysayers swore would never happen now has. [-X

How the hell are they going to bring out Cho Aniki? Its not as bad as Ai Cho Aniki, but doesn't have to pass the ESA rating?

Totally agreed 8) . It feels good to be right about CD games finally making it, huh buddy ;) ? As I told Steve, I think Seldane is going to commit suicide once he reads about it.

At least they got Gate of Thunder, which is a requirement. I'm assuming it will include the Bonk games and Bomberman with it and if that's the case, I feel sorry for those VC users that already bought those games.

Still no word from Nintendo or Hudson on this and these games are coming out within a month?  I can't read Japanese, so maybe it is on Hudson's Japan site, but I doubt it.  Can anyone confirm this as something official?

Gate of Thunder and Super Air Zonk are confirmed for US.  However, I can't confirm that it will be the 3-in-1 Gate of Thunder release or just the game - but the feeling I'm getting is that it will be the GoT game only and not have Bonk/Bomberman with it.

N64 importing is the same deal as SNES/SFC games, but S&P was pricey for years for similar reasons as Radiant Silvergun and still goes for something like $40 - $60.

Gate of Thunder has been released for the Wii Virtual Console.  At this time I don't know how many blocks it takes up....

Update to how many blocks GoT takes...a surprisingly small 220 blocks.  For comparison, the Internet channel takes up 233 blocks, Art of Fighting (Neo Geo) takes up 135 blocks, and Paper Mario (N64) takes up 249 blocks.

Gate of Thunder? Awesome! Although I'm disappointed that Ys: Book I & II didn't become the inaugural Turbo CD game for the VC, it's still great that we're getting Gate of Thunder.  Can't wait to see how this plays out!

Seems identical to me, though I haven't given it a good run-thru yet.  They must be using some crazy compression for the audio, I don't know how they got it that small.  The GOT ROM tracks plus audio tracks in 128kbps CBR MP3 (44kHz) comes to almost 50% more data than the Paper Mario ROM, yet takes up less blocks on the Wii.

So I bought the game.  Some thoughts:

-Interestingly there is a split second loading screen, shown below:

-Music sounds REALLY good on my 5.1 surround system....Sounds so good in fact that it sounds like it is mixed in 5.1 but I doubt it....

-Gameplay & sound FX seem identical to original.

In conclusion...

SUPER CD HAS COME TO THE WII!!

Interesting that they kept the System Card screen, seems like it would confuse people. So does the game just include Gate of Thunder or does it come with the other three games as well?

i just DLed it today too. I found it strange it included the PCE  menu screen, why not the US version? i guess its the japanese version of the game? when you soft reset it takes you back to it also, is it part of the game code maybe? what does the cd 2.0 load screen look like in japan? never had that unit.

that download took forever 220 blocks! how many megs is that? 50?

the game plays great and NO load times, and no song reset times, which i do miss the quaintness of...  but i cant tell the difference in sound quality.  my turbo never played this game right and music would always stop. despite no scratches.

its like 1993 for me all over again.   now we just need cotton, ys, lords, de2, shadowgate and all the rest.  and i hear the value of my games dropping suddenly

No, it just appears for a split second then dissapears.

Interesting that they kept the System Card screen, seems like it would confuse people.

Well, the system card screen is not interactive and only appears for a second...maybe they will "fix" this in future releases...who knows.

So does the game just include Gate of Thunder or does it come with the other three games as well?

Just GoT.

What is going on here is that since the emulator running the game was coded by Hudson of Japan, the emu is based off of the PCE System Card, not the US one (thus why it says "PC Engine Super CD-ROM System").

While it is kinda disappointing that we will barely get to see any of the famous loading screens on the Turbo CD games and the interactivity of the system card screen, they were pretty much not the point to the game.  As long as I get to enjoy the actual CD game itself, that's good enough for me. :)

I think that's a complete myth that the bluriness is a problem, I can't really tell much of a difference on my 50" plasma in 480p.   The picture is just softened a little, doesn't look better or worse than the NES or SNES emulation - just different.  You won't care or notice after you've played a few TG16 games on the VC.

I don't know how it compares to other VC formats, but its very noticible compared to real Turbo hardware. But if you're the type of person who hooks their PS3 or Xbox 360 with composite though, it won't really matter.

Kinda the same deal in Japan.  I d/led Ys I II (awesome!  duh :)) and even though Cho Aniki came out, Gradius II was pushed back.  That possibly delayed the next couple games too.

Oh, and the next CD games in Japan to be released are Dynastic Hero, Take the A Train, Kawa no Nushi Tsuri (Fishing game), and Gradius II.  Interesting spread I guess.

That is interesting, since MWIII already came out on Genesis (didn't it?). Wouldn't that be the first time the same game has come out on different VC platforms?

Yes, but you're also talking different regions. Wonderboy V came out on the U.S. Genesis VC, and it's coming out on the Japanese PCE VC. Still only one version per region.

Unless it also came out on the Japanese Megadrive VC.. Then that's a different story.

But this brings up another point I've been wondering about for a while. Is SEGA going to put a stop to them releasing the old SEGA games on the TG-16 VC? So far we haven't seen one yet, have we?

Wonderboy is probably a special case since SEGA doesn't exclusively own the rights/license to those games.

Not sure about US Wii VC stuff, but Jpn Wii VC has Gradius NES and PCE versions available.  I think that was the first game.  Oddly enough Gradius II will be the next multi-platform VC game once the PCE ver is released.

No, seriously, it's not.  Dynastic Hero is based on Wonderboy V but is an entirely different license.  They share some graphics, gameplay, and level design, but they are not the same game.  The only official Wonderboy game released on our beloved system is Monster Lair.

Put down the pipe, Odonadon.  The title was changed, but it was handled by Westone and is essentially the same game.  Click here (http://www.sega-16.com/Side By Side- Wonder Boy.php) for a nice comparison of Wonder Boy in Monster World and Dynastic Hero.

Not only the title, but some graphics, the story, characters, and animation as well.  Bottom line is there is no mention of Wonderboy, thus not of the Wonderboy license.  Like Cratermaze isn't Doreamon.

Big Day The ESRB Two has rated two more candidates for the Wii Virtual Console. Ys I & II, Rolling Thunder 2 Due have been rated which is usually a good indication that they will come to North America in the next few weeks. Ys Book I & II is a role-playing game collection released for the Turbografx-CD and Rolling Thunder 2 is a side-scrolling shooter classic.

Ys I & II.. Picking up steam!!!

I'm begining to wonder, if they're having problems releasing, do to some of the high profile talent in the game.  Mainly Thomas Hayden Church, since his Sandman role, maybe getting a little cocky?  Also, some of the other actors, are high profile voice actors.

I'm betting someone wants some royalties from Ys if it gets released.  Which is sad.  Many people need to play this game and realize how awesome it is.  Guess I'll just stick with playing my original on my Duo.  :)

I have to say, since I ran out of storage on my Wii for VC games a few months ago, I haven't purchased a single VC game and have reverted to playing all my games off my modded XBox with MednafenX.  The Virtual Console stuff was cool for a bit, but they didn't do a very good job overall with regards to having enough storage in the Wii, and pricing the games properly.  I still think $3 per title is high.

So yeah, after all that I'm back to playing the original games I do have off my PCEngine, and card/CD games I don't have off the ol' XBox.

A whopping 512MB of storage for not only VC, but also save games and anything else that gets downloaded.

Easily, but unfortunately not quickly and easily.  It is MUCH easier to hit the power button on the PCE or XBox then to fuddle through the file manager to find and move a game to the SD card to free up space, then find the game I want to play and copy it back from the SD card to the Wii.  Boo-urns.

Since Falcom had no problems with it being released in Japan, I don't think it would be a problem for them, to release it elsewhere.  So, if there's truly a holdup on it, I think it has to be the voices.......or, possibly the emulation?

So far they haven't released any ICOM games on the VC. Does ICOM still exist?

It doesn't necessarily mean they won't ever release it, but the fact other ICOM games like Ghost Manor haven't shown up probably means something.

This is from Wiki:

ICOM Simulations was formed as TMQ Software[1] in the early 1980s by Tod Zipnick. With the MacVenture series, ICOM pioneered the point-and-click adventure interface and later multiplatform CD-ROM development with Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective. The company was acquired in 1993 by Viacom New Media which closed its operations in 1997. Renamed to Rabid Entertainment, VNM/ICOM was dismantled in 1998.

The rights to ICOM's game portfolio is currently held by the company Infinite Ventures.

My guess is, since we haven't seen any ICOM games on the VC yet, Nintendo is having a hard time securing the rights to those games from this Infinite Ventures group.

Damn, I didnt realize there was a Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective part 3 released for the PC.  Just looked at ICOM's game catalog.

Camp California and ShapeShifter are some of ICOM's better games but your right about no ICOM releases on the virtual console.  Nintendo could be having a hard time getting the rights are maybe Nintendo is not even trying?

Ghost Manor
The Addams Family
Shape Shifter
Camp California
Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes 2
Yo' Bro
Beyond Shadowgate

Hmm.. That seems like a short list to me. Maybe I missed a few.

Shapeshifter rules.

But on the rights-securing tip, there are a couple developers we haven't seen any games from on the VC. They did manage to secure rights from Data East, who went under around the same time as ICOM I think which surprised me.

Nothing from Telenet/Renovation yet though or any of the SEGA ports.

Back in the day I saw a magazine review for at least one new Shermatlock game. Maybe they never got to finish filming for whatever would've wound up as the last in the series.

EDIT: Just found a seller in the U.K. on eBay with 3 volumes of what appears to be the PC versions.

I guess IGN must've given Final Fight and Streets of Rage 5/10's at the most, going by the writing in the review...

-but it looks like SoR got 6.5 and SNES FF got a freaking 8! Not only is the SNES FF the same kind of 'repetetive plow through the same enemies' style game, but just like Riot Zone (but unlike SoR) its also only single player!

Seriously though, these review scores are perfectly proportioned to how "jounalists" favor/rate the three consoles:

SNES: 8
Genesis: 6.5
Turbo Duo: 4

I get the distinct feeling many of today's game reviewers don't know much about the Turbo. So they refer to old publications from the era and see reviews that are reflective of the Turbo failing in the market. Then they generate their opinions based on these old reviews. The "if it wasn't as good back then, it can't be as good now!" mentality.

So regardless of how good these games actually are, any Turbo game released on the VC is automatically going to be 2 points behind where they would be had they been Genesis or SNES games. So for example if Riot Zone had been a Genesis or SNES title, it would've got a 6 on those grounds alone.

Lets face facts,Riot Zone really is`nt A very good game.On the other hand they gave Super Air Zonk A pretty good review, which i thought was a terrible game.Completely inferior to the original Air Zonk.I'm referring to IGN.I don`t really go by there reviews,I just throw up here to see what other people think. And yeah,it probably is some guy that just sits there and compares them to snes, and Sega Genesis. And does not really have A grasp of what the system can do.

Lets face facts,Riot Zone really is`nt A very good game.

You're right-- it's not a phenomenal game. But it's not a horrible game, either. There's nothing original about it, and it doesn't do anything better than it's contemporaries. But Riot Zone is still very playable, and it has a good soundtrack.

My real point though is that these VC reviewers would probably rate Turbo games on average 2 points higher if the exact same games were SNES or Genesis titles. See, the VC reviewers probably don't know much about the Turbo, like most of the general public, and rely heavily on what they read about it to create an idea in their head of what it must have been like "back in the day" since they don't have their own memories to base off of. Since most of the history you can find and read online about the TG-16 contains words like "loser" and "failure" and "dead on arrival" it's no wonder they can't help but put a negative spin on all things Turbo in their heads. And this feeling comes across in the scores they give the games. Whether it's actually indicative of the quality of the game in question is another story altogether.

And this feeling comes across in the scores they give the games. Whether it's actually indicative of the quality of the game in question is another story altogether.

Ugh...it's the late 80s/early-mid 90s all over again... ](*,) hehe But yeah, you just summed it all up there nat. I, for one, am planning on buying Riot Zone. It may not be Streets of Rage, but that's not really the point. Every shmup isn't Gate of Thunder or Nexzr, but I can still enjoy them if they're OK.

I think that they actually reviewed Riot Zone fairly by their own standards/preferences, but were super biased when reviewing non-Turbo 'classics' like Final Fight and didn't base their review on the actual SNES game so much as "wow, its Final Fight!".

Hmm, I wonder how Riot Zone will go over for VC owners who never touched it.

Probably not very good.Going by the bad review Ign gave it.http://wii.ign.com/articles/848/848725p1.html
Yeah I no this is A old topic.

Oh man, that's such garbage.

What a bunch of crap. I hate the SNES, Like the Genesis and love my Turbo systems. I'd be all over a Wii if they would release Beyond Shadowgate.

Damn, it's been like two years since you've been on here hasn't it?

Anyway, so far no ICOM games on VC. Doesn't mean we won't see them eventually, but it doesn't bode well.

Yeah, it has been awhile. Been busy as Hell. Nice to see that I am remembered though. LOL. Getting back into the Turbo again. Not that I got out, but had to sell stuff as the real world came crashing down. Getting my stuff back finally. My buddy has a Wii and that has been how I was getting my Turbo fix. Not the same as the real thing though.

I liked the SNES, but I had that after a Genesis and TG-16.  Actually my brother and I won the SNES in a radio show contest.  We got it a couple weeks before the SNES release day.  I'm not sure if we would've ever bought one.  I was never one of those Mario/Zelda fanboys.  I like them but thought they were very overrated.  I was into mainly just the Konami games like Goemon/Mystical Ninja, Castlevania IV, Turtles in Time, Sunset Riders, Contra 3, Axelay.  I also loved Super Turrican, Super Adventure Island, Actraiser, Space Megaforce/Super Aleste, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Lagoon, Super EDF, Ninja Warriors Again, and FF 4-6. (only FF's I like).  The Turbo community then was just as small as it is now.  So of course since people haven't heard of it or played it, it must not be that good.  I also think this goes into people's reviews of the games.  I can't wait till someone reviews Lords of Thunder and mentions the Sega CD version.  The IGN review of Dynastic Hero is quite crap.  Take a look at the comments as well.  People saying the hero looks like Mega Man.  Yeah Westone didn't develop it,  but still it's not a knock off/rip off  title as some reviewers are saying.  Hey if people want to miss out on good games that's fine with me.  It doesn't keep me from playing all the Turbo stuff.  Their loss.

While looking for some Dungeon Explorer II screenshots I came upon this-

http://vc-pce.com/jpn/j/title/dungeon_explorer2.html

Does this mean its already out in japan? Hopefully if they release it over here it'll help drive down the collector's price.

After looking further, it looks like it's probably an unofficial site. However, it lists Dracula X as having a release date of April and the following games as already out-

Panic Bomber
Neo Nectaris
Dragon Slayer
Image Fight
Image Fight II
Gradius
Gradius II

http://vc-pce.com/jpn/j/index.html

Even though Hudson may be too lazy to bring over most of whats getting released in japan, its a nice sign seeing the Konami games getting the VC treatment.

Yup, it was released early in February.  The only titles that have been rated by the ESRB but not yet released in the U.S. are Break In, Dragon Slayer, Final Soldier, Sim Earth (why?), and Ys I & II.

Yup.  It received an 'E', though it has a tobacco reference according to the ESRB (I think that's just on the title screen).

They might notice that it's bigger and has more characters to choose from, though they'll still voice the same complaint.  What the hell do they expect?  It's a frickin' sequel, for cryin' out loud!

Break In, huh?

Great song by Fugazi.

As for Hudson releasing Break In... are they trying to tap into the deep pockets of video game billiards aficionados? Are there other billiards games available? Is Hudson releasing this because there is no competing title?

I'm assuming it's because it's an easy Japanese game to be brought over here, due to both language barrier and license issues. Of course I'd much rather see something else if possible :P (like Gateball!).

You have to look at Street Fighter, eh hem, Fighting Street from a historical standpoint. It is the first in the series after all.

Remember when we were curious about what the next TG-16 game would be released for the Virtual Console?

That seems like ancient history now... Aaron had even started a guide for some of the games as they were released...
