Title: Mysterious Song release delayed again!
Post by: nodtveidt on October 14, 2007, 07:08:07 AM
Well, this is bad news and good news all at the same time. Bad news is, of course, the game will be delayed and will not appear until first quarter 2008 at the earliest. The good news is "why": there's a LOT of new artwork being added to improve the overall quality of the game, particularly in the cutscenes. Here's a quick sample of the new work, courtesy of Black Tiger:

Seldane's back on tile detail, finishing up one of the most important areas of the game...an area that was never in the original, it's exclusive to this version. Paranoia Dragon is working on some final improvements to the audio as well. It also looks like the enemies are going to get a final facelift courtesy of Keranu. And of course, there's a couple of features still left to be added to the game, courtesy of me. So, the work goes on to make sure the quality of the game is as high as possible before it's released, even if it means it's delayed a little bit longer.

Nice. Can we buy it in ROM/ISO format?

Better.  It's going to be released, on a pressed disc with a manual & shrinkwrapped, etc.

It will still work in Magic Engine, right? Because if it does, I might buy a copy. :) (I have no Duo, the only NEC thing in my house is a broken scanner. :( )

It works in Magic Engine, but until David fixes a few details, the game won't quite look completely correct in his emulator.

Damn. Oh well though, if it's only like $70 or something, I may still get it.

$70 for what? The game or emulator? Either one isn't that much :D ! Approxmiately $30 for the game itself and the Magic Engine emulator is $20 I think. The game is very playable in ME, but Nod tells me that there are some technical issues that ME has troubles with when playing the game. You can always use Mednafen, which is free and fully supports the game, but it can be a pain to set up.

Oh yeah I definitely wouldn't expect the game to cost that much. I think we're pretty much settled on $30, but it's not final.

I'll buy it for $30.  Seems to be a good price point for homebrew Turbo CD titles.

No NEC consoles!  Sacrlidge!!!

That art is approximately 5 billion times better than what was there before, good choice on letting Black Tiger redo it.

I agree. The art looks much better. The old art looked so simple and ameteurish (No offense).

Joe... just for you they're going to release the first batch with some bugs and crappy cover art, then... the next back will have better cover art and bugs fixes (it still maybe not be 100% compatible with your 32x sitting *right* next to your TG+CD combo - best to shield the 32x in a lead box)

My 32X shouldn't interfere with the save option on the Turbo CD just as long as Beggar Prince isn't inserted into its cart slot.  That game causes bugs in nearby games.  Thanks for making a special edition just for me, though.  I always appreciate that kind of stuff.

If in this case more time equals better quality then wait we shall. I have alot more faith in this project then any of the others being worked on elsewhere. Who did you find willing to press the disc,Care4Data,someone in the USA?

Hahahaha, Care4Data. Good times. Please excuse me if that's who is actually pressing the game.

The original cinemas actually got better and better the further through the game they were and had some very nice use of color, looking more vibrant than most official PCE CD games. They're especially impressive considering how they were made.

I truly can't wait!

Just think we could have Mysterious Song and that awesome looking Shmup from MindRek in the same YEAR!!!!!!

WOW!!!  2008 is looking like a HOT year for Turbo Super CD releases!!!

Shit, I've waited SOOO long to say something like that!
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!

It will probably be another 3-5 years before that MindRec shooter sees the light of day. OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but 2-3 more years at least.

Not panning anyone here, BTW, just that these "independent" releases take eons to materialize. It's just the nature of the beast when you're dealing with a group of people that work on these projects at their own leisure.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!

Yeah, independent games take a lot longer to make than what some people might think. They aren't are jobs, so we don't devote 40 hours a week trying to make games. We have our moments where we'll get a lot of work done, but often a lot of dead moments as well. The funny thing is how when you have a game that's practically 90% done, that last 10% to finish takes longer than the 90% took!
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!
Post by: ParanoiaDragon on December 15, 2007, 12:17:04 AM
We should mention though, depending on how things go, there's the chance that we could end up releasing 2 games in 2008.  Ofcoarse, that's not something I can ever say is for sure, problems can arise in beta testing, or whatever, things happen, so, don't get your hopes to high.  I'm hoping we'll  do it though, it shouldn't take me all that long to finish the music for our 2nd project.  Not to mention our kind of "side project" which would make 3 games in a way.

I'm content simply knowing that it will actually be released.

Timeframe does not matter, as far as I am concerned.

An update at long last...

The game engine has reached 100% completion, meaning that every intended feature and code fragment has been added. It's a major milestone in the development of the game. Because we've reached 100% engine completion, I've begun adding the Spanish translation to the game. It'll take awhile to add because there's a lot of text, and since the font isn't standard I have to use conversion codes, but so far so good. Equuskia will be doing the final touches to the Spanish translation after it's all added. bonq has offered to add Spanish translations for the cutscenes as well, though he's been MIA for quite awhile now. Equuskia and I might take care of it ourselves if we don't hear from him in the next couple of months. After all, her and I have speaking roles in the game too (I play the part of Tiger, Equuskia plays the part of Ryanna).

Paranoia Dragon has done the final cuts of most of the soundtracks. The music sounds absolutely incredible, especially compared to the original score. Black Tiger's new artwork looks incredible as well...the game is really going to have beautiful cutscenes...provided I can get the colors to cooperate. :D

We are beginning to consider making this a double disc release, adding an OST disc in addition to the regular game disc. Any thoughts on this?

I like the idea, considering it's dirt cheap to have discs stamped.  As long as you don't add a bunch of extras of dubious worth ( *cough*  Working Designs  *cough* ), driving costs up and potential customers away, I think most people would appreciate getting something a little different from the normal releases.

There wouldn't be anything over-the-top, just an extra disc that contains the soundtrack. Of course, this would mean that the game will require a double case, but hey...many PCE games came in a double case, and a few US ones did too (such as Vasteel and Sim Earth).

Why not just use those double-cd cases that are single case in length?  That way, it stays nice & slim, won't increase postage costs for anyone as you can use basic bubble mailers instead of using boxes for shipping.  (But the real reason for me is more personal -- I HATE fat double cases.  :x)
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!

The double CD cases are are single-sized are highly fragile. Besides, I can't think of a single PCE game that used one.

My thoughts exactly!  I myself, switch out all my double cd case games, to be in single cd case, it's just wasted space!  Please Nod, slim double cd cases are the wave of the future!  I HATE the fat ones! :D  BTW, thanks for the praise about the soundtrack, it made me blush

I gotta say I would rather have a fat double CD case than a single one, despite them taking up more space. But it's up to what has higher demand I guess.

Get with the program.  You guys need to add more content, redo the engine, split the game into two parts and make a double-cd, gatefold digipak with a fold out poster featuring the entire Frozen Utopia back catalog.  Of course, this is in addition to the OST enhanced CD with a documentary on the making of Mysterious Song and the bonus visual collection DVD in 5.1 Dolby surround sound.  Both discs will be exclusive to the limited edition, advance-beta-promo only to be released in Japan under license by Red Frog "Special Version."

There will be 1000 copies of the game, and Red Frog will NOT be distributing it. We were originally going to have it distributed through TZD, but fortunately the game took longer to finish than expected...I guess it's better for all involved that that happened, since we'd be ashamed to have Red Frog represent us, and the game's had major overhauls since then anyways.

I went to the Frozen Utopia website and saw the new screenshots of the redone cutscenes, and WOW! They look incredible! Even though they are the same moments as in the old samples, just the new character design and art style make it look so much better. After the game comes out, I would love to see a comparison between the old cutscenes and the new. The game now looks really professional. Great job, Black Tiger!

There is one thing that's bugging me, though. The character portraits used in battle and status screens now look NOTHING like their cutscene versions. I hope it's not too much trouble, but that looks like something that really needs fixing.

Still, I'm now more excited than ever! Around what time of year can we expect the game to be released? The site still has the old release date.

The character portrait "avatars" is artwork ported straight from the original PC game. This has come up before, but I think the decision was made that these won't be changed in order to stay true to the original.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!
Post by: Keranu on May 14, 2008, 06:12:01 PM
Regarding the portraits, the portraits for all three characters were originally taken straight from the original PC version. GUTS mentioned how they didn't look good, so I actually updated Tiger and Ryanna's portraits to make them look better and more accurate. However I didn't update Spear's portrait because I was lazy and thought it looked pretty good to begin with, though it has been something I've been meaning to tackle with more. Maybe I'll try coming up with something tonight, Black_Tiger's new artwork should come in handy. Might have to update the other character portraits a little too.

Yes nat, the original decision was indeed to never change those portraits, since they were from the original game and there was no need to change them. However, I was in contact with the original developer and he stated that that was one of the things he would have done differently...hence hinting that the portraits are better off changed. Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak...so I gave clearance to update them. The guys are working on it back at the Frozen Utopia forum's developers area.

I was thinking darker than the original. ;)

As an aside, researchers must have examined the potrayal of race/ethnicity in games... it would be an interesting topic.
Title: Re: Mysterious Song release delayed again!
Post by: nodtveidt on May 17, 2008, 11:35:39 AM
In many RPGs, ethnicity doesn't come into play a whole lot since game worlds are generally not Earth or are a different representation of Earth. Furthermore, making an RPG that is representative of the races on Earth would be pretty boring IMO. To that end, I personally don't care what a character's ethnicity is as long as the characters are interesting and do their jobs as story devices.

A quick update:
Thanks to malducci's assembly wizardry, it may be possible to re-combine the battle program with the map program. That means no more load time before and after combat, which also means better performance if we are unable to have the discs properly pressed. I'll be experimenting with this over the course of the next few weeks. I'd do it quicker but wifey's pregnancy is almost finished, so you never know when the baby's gonna decide to crawl out. :D
