Title: A Holiday Celebration Board.
Post by: Game and Watch Kirby on April 01, 2008, 06:35:32 PM
It's now time to put my plan into action! From now on when a holiday is celebrated, it will be written in this topic instead of making separate ones for each. It'll be much more convienient

Today is April Fool's Day, so I can hope that at least the majority of folks have laid down a prank or two to someone else :P. I didn't have much of a chance to, since I was pretty busy for most of the day :(.

I do have an important announcement, though. I will be gone from the forums for quite a while. I need to get things done and set up for my Wii, so I'm afraid I won't be visiting for the time. Plus, I could be playing Blazing Lazers, which might lessen the time even more for here. Goodbye for now...

GOTCHA! APRIL FOOL !

I will not be TOO busy to be on these forums, at least for the time. I haven't downloaded Blazing Lazers from Virtual Console, either, but the Internet Channel, Lords of Thunder, and Super Mario Bros. (I'll go into more detail on this later). I know this board was made late in the day for me, but at least I was able to make this in time.

Happy belated Fools Day everyone.  This year, I kept the pranks pretty low key.  After a fruitful day of dialing people at random, playing the part of the county coroner, and asking them to come down to identify a body, I went to my girl's place and told her 'we need to talk'.  After a half hour of her asking why, tears, and me explaining that I'm in love with her sister, I could no longer keep a straight face and had to let her in on the joke; the look on her face when I yelled April Fools was priceless.  Good time, good times.

Today is Earth Day in the United States (this holiday was celebrated a month ago in Canada but I'm unsure if it is celebrated anywhere else). This means that it would be a good opportunity to try to do an action that is helpful to save the planet (if desired, of course). What I do/did is turn unplug any appliances that are not in use, and recycle any empty water by putting them in designated bins.

Whole Foods had also annouced that it would initiate the "use-again shopping bags" policy up to this point. Has this been of any success? I have not gone to any food shopping there for quite a while, so I cannot say if it was.

I try to live as Earth-friendly as I can, all the time. We always use those reusable shopping bags for instance, use "green" paper towels and kitty litter, etc. For me, every day is Earth Day! It's the Earth Century!

I decided that since I love the planet, I would not flush any toilets today.  I also refrained from showering, brushing my teeth, washing any clothes, using tissue (just used curtains or my shirt instead), wiping my anus after using the toilet, driving my car to the mailbox (I walked to the end of the driveway from the garage instead).  I also made sure all lights and power wherever I went was shut off at the breaker panel, gave people who used water for any reason a stern lecture about our poor planet and I hugged a polar bear who was stranded on a floating block of ice (yes, I also remembered to hug a tree).  Everyone appreciated these kind gestures from myself and showered with with praise and admiration.  How DARE we use resources from this planet!

Now I want to beat up a hippie.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world on the same day. It wouldn't be much of an "Earth Day" if every country celebrated it on different months of the year.

I declare April 23 Northern Hemisphere Day! We can celebrate all our excesses and consumerism on one special day.

Incorrect, sir.  Earth Day for many parts of the world is on the Spring equinox; in the U.S. and many other countries, it's on April 22nd.

OK, sir, there are two Earth Days:  one was started by the UN that is celebrated in the northern hemisphere in the spring equinox and in the autumn in the southern hemisphere. The other Earth Day (the more famous Earth Day I think we are actually talking about) is celebrated by 500 million people in 175 countries on April 22nd of every year. These two Earth Days have completely different origins and are celebrated separate from each other. Most countries celebrate the "April 22nd" Earth Day. The equinox Earth Days are a totally different event.

I guess my Northern Hemisphere Day idea wasn't really that far off. Seems like we already have one, but call it "Earth Day". :P In any case, my main point was that Earth Day in Canada is on the 22nd. But, Canada also celebrated the equinox Earth Day last month like Kirby stated, along with the US and Europe and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere.

So, if I haven't confused you by this point, I'll be amazed.   Anyway, Happy belated Earth Day!

Here's the wiki that explains it much better than I just did:

Happy Mother's Day to all.

The time seems to be right to tell of the "family business" I had gone through a few months ago. Some may already be aware of this, but I will state it here in tribute of my own mother. This is a sad circumstance, even on this particular day, which may not be suitable for some to hear:

Two years ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she had found out from an ulcered one on her left side. She had managed to cope with it in the time. Shortly around Christmas last year, the cancer had gotten worse, causing her to lose her sight and mobility. Shortly after my birthday, which was on January 15th, she was finally  taken to Southern Hills hospital for hopeful treatment. Family members would visit her everyday until she had passed away on March 8 at relatively 8:45 P.M. We returned to New Jersey to put her in the proper burial in the Saint Mary of the Lake church, just as she had requested.

Stating this, I no longer have a mother to celebrate Mother's Day to. No one has to worry about me for this, however, as I've managed to cope with it well.

I know I always do these holiday celebrations at night, but I'm just so busy during the day oftentimes ](*,).  I'll try to do them earlier in the day for now on.

I would say to consider yourself lucky. When I think of the woman I was forced to call "mom" growing up, all I think of is hatred and resentment. Whether she is alive or dead is immaterial to me, but I hope for the latter. At least you have good memories to hold onto. Don't let go of them like so many others do.

My wife and I normally do not take part in Hallmark holidays, but we did this year...sort of. I got her a scented oil burner with a horse on it, and we got her mother an African-styled wall hanging.

Sorry for your loss, Kirby; keep her in your heart and remember all the good times.

Happy belated Mother's Day to the millions of milfs that I know are roaming this forum yet are afraid to join.  :)
I hope y'all said thanks to your mama by sending flowers (or flours, eh nat?), chatting on the phone, giving her smokes during visitation hours, by buying her breakfast, or whatever else sounded like a good idea at the time.

Sorry to hear that Kirby. You really seem to have dealt with the loss very maturely. I hope I will be able to handle it as well as you. I've really been starting to think about my parents and how they are starting to get older. They're not sick or even close to unhealthy, but you never know. Anyway, I don't want to think about that right now. :)

If by celebrate you mean throw a party and eat cake, then you might be correct though I'm sure that old hippies could also join the party.  If by celebrate you mean observe, then the answer would be unselfish people that are willing to sacrifice a bit in an effort to preserve precious resources for later generations.

Hippies are usually the ones to destroy things rather than conserve them. They prance around wagging their fingers at everyone else, yet are completely blind to their own wasteful acts and selfish principles.

Hippies conserve more water than anyone else since they do not shower.  The world owes its life to hippies.  If it weren't for hippies, the world would have exploded or ended or something like that by now.

Is that the type of beer that has some considerbly highly hilarious commercials, poking fun at/offending Americans all the while? I have seen some of those advertisements on YouTube, and I have heard that it does taste awful, just as you say, Ceti Alpha. Is it really as bad-tasting as some imply?

lol Kirby. Yeah, Molson has the commercials that make fun of Americans. I think even one of the guys from the Daily Show is doing commercials for them now. Their commercials are sometimes funny, but the beer is awful.

Anyways, I had a good day off, though I feel like I could use another. hehe Thanks for the remembrance of Victoria Day Kirby.  :)

Ugh. Hopefully, I can be forgiven (especially for myself for being a bit forgetful). Memorial Day was Monday, as was also the Summer Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom. I was with my sister and father for some portion of the morning, then he invited me to dinner with his friend and went to see Iron Man in theaters. Yesterday, I was also helping my sister pack up her belongings (which she is moving to Utah near Salt Lake City), so those circumstances may have caused to post the holiday celebration here to slip my mind. I'll try my best to remember to do so for now on.

thats what i heard on the news! I live in the suberbs of LA county. There are at least around 10 - 15 donut shops in my town. I don't like to go to downtown too much. The traffic there is terrible and there are a lot of bums. There are these streets where there are like 100 bums or more on the sidewalks living in tents and stuff. Its really terrible, lol. Did i mention the terrible traffic? I got my van towed while I was at the Japan arcade in little tokyo!  :x damn addicting initial d 4 arcade! I was playing that thing for a good hour!

Today is Flag Day here in the United States. This day was made in honor of, in 1777, congress's adoption of The Stars and Stripes as a symbol of the nation (source: Answers.com's entry on the subject (http://www.answers.com/topic/flag-day)). I hope this day was enjoyable for many, no matter what was done (I myself had went to see Kung Fu Panda today, and I've quite enjoyed it, too).

Tomorrow is also Father's Day. May the dads have a nice day, as well, for the holiday made specially for them (mine may want to relax a lot, and I'll make him a card to him, too).

Not really a holiday but around this time of the month.. August.. and particular August the 14th its known as Hungry Ghosts or Ghost Month..

Anyway it is said that the lower realms (ie HELL) open up and allow ghosts, spirits and deceased ancestors to roam the earth.. But to chinese folk Hell really means something different.. its seen as some Under world passage or maze where the dead go to make amends for sins they did while on earth.. This is where we chinese burn "hell money" its usually done as a way to send money to the deceased so they can spend it in this "hell"

Around august it is advised to best to lay low and not go out late at night especially young and old or NOT do as much activity as it is feared that it attracts wandering spirits causing disturbances in households and the worst possible case brings death.  So most things like construction.. weddings..  usually get put off till the following month..

In the old days chinese folk would offer incense, food and material offerings to appease the spirits.. unfortunately this practise seems to be on the wane as more and more asian folk become westernize (i guess).. So if you see asians/chinese folk performing strange rituals maybe in the street you'll know they are trying to appease the spirits. :P

Silly me :P #-o. In the midist of the launch of Sunteam_Paul's website update and the work ethic I've been doing lately, I've forgotten to annouce Labor Day for the United States, which was two days ago. I hope that everyone whom had celebrated it had a nice day off (which I certainly did).

With the amount of college work, video game playing, and Internet business that I've been taking care of lately, I've been pretty busy with my life right now. What did you work on that day (if it wasn't your job/carerr)? Even with that, I hope your day was good, also.

Yes, there are two holidays celebrated today. Thanks for beating me to it, fellas :P.

Earlier today, I've learned that in his time, the trade routes needed to go to the Orient were owned by the Musliums. To travel on them, the high prices had to be paid or the person had to be killed and the ship seized. To avoid such harshness, Columbus had negotiated with many countries to provide the finances for his exploration, he had gotten the best opportunity to sail in Spain, and the king and queen provided him with three ships. It was estimated, as there were debates that the world was either 10,000, 12,000, or 25,000 miles/meters in diameter and he thought that it was the first amount, that it would only take him 3,000 miles to reach Japan, as 7,000 miles were recorded long ago by Marco Polo for the route. Several days later, his crew began to get nervous, as half of their food was gone and did not think they would have enough for the returning trip, so the members began to get mutanized, and told Christopher Colombus to turn back to Spain. He had refused, as he knew he only had one chance, but his crew made the deal that on October 12th, he would have to turn back or his head would be removed as the crew would be completely mutinized by then. On the morning of October 12th, one crew member had discovered land, and they had settled on one of the islands in the Carribean, thinking that they were in the Indies. It was said to be miraculous that he was able to find it.

To the Canadians eating a large feast on this day, may you stuff yourselves well, as the meal was meant to be enjoyed.

Tonight is the night when ghoulish beings roam the earth, and humans roaming the streets will be given candy as they visit different homes. What will people dress like for Halloween? Last year, me and my friends dressed up with a Star Wars theme. We had Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Aayla Secura. I'll post some pics later. I wanted to do Boba Fett for this year but did not have time to work on the costume. It will be ready for next year though! I will be attending a huge costume party tomorrow night with a Rock Band competition so I will have to whip up a costume and a makeshift band for the evening. I would like to see other peoples' costumes so if you have one, please post pics!

I'd figure as much that the pants would be part of a costume set. I suppose there are other places that Party City stores are located, since I never knew that they were outside of Las Vegas.

Today is Veteran's Day. This is a day where our troops are honored for performing duties to protect our country. My heartfelt thanks go out to all the men and women in the armed services; their dedication and sacrifice have kept this great country free and relatively safe.  Also, happy birthday today to the Marine Corp. on its 230th anniversary.

(and maybe donate money to the Salvation Army, too? I'm not sure if this is being done yet as folks with boxes usually come around Christmas time).

The Salvation Army is not associated with Veterans, but is rather a christian organization headquartered in the U.K.  They do a lot of good work around the world, but I refuse to donate to 'em due to their anti-gay rhetoric.

Really? I thought that the Salvation Army was just an organization for giving donated items to the poor around the world, and not one associated with religion or situated in the United Kingdom. Nonetheless, they're good to provide their services, too :P.

Up here we call it Remembrance Day, but it's the same thing. This is the day where we remember and honour the brave men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

In Canada we wear poppies in November in remembrance of our verterans. I think Britain does the same now as well.

A Canadian medical officer during WWI noticed how dense the poppy growth over the graves in Flanders, France. He wrote a poem about it during the war. The poem talks about Flanders fields, but it is really about the universal fear of forgetting the dead. The poppy is a symbol of rememberance so we'll never forget.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

- John McCrae

Also this year, Britain and Canada held a joint ceremony to commemorate the 68,000 Canadian troops that died during WWI. All the soldiers names were projected on a vigil at Canada House in Britain.

For everyone's awareness, I'll be leaving for my trip to Utah to visit my older sister for Thanksgiving (she'll be attempting to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the first time as I visit the new house she had moved in a few months ago). No it's gonna take a lot longer than I originally expected. According to the official USCIS website, there is a 6 month processing time for our first document alone. According to this website (http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?autocom=custom&page=k3historical) it won't take quite that long, as they're currently processing applications received on September 24 (step 3) We are November 3, so about 5  more weeks for us, for that step. I'm hoping I can get her here in April, but I'd settle for June.

And in other news my car was stolen (again) over christmas break. My neighborhhood is populated by college students, so during vacations this part of town is deserted. During spring break, someone stole my car and used it to move stuff around, then left my car with the ignition turned on in the apartment parking lot. This time my car is gone. So I'm not going to be able to bring the games I planned on bringing, because I don't have a car to go get em.

I've had quite the nice Martin Luther King Jr. today myself. With my father, I went to Target, as I had a gift card there that he gave to me, and Best Buy, as a few Reward Zone program coupons came in the mail being vaild from 1/16/2009-1/22/2009 the day after I bought Kirby Super Star Ultra and WarioLand: Shake It! from one of the Best Buy stores around my area. At Target, I had purchased Super Smash Brothers Brawl, a game I highly anticipated getting for Christmas, and at Best Buy I bought Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 along with Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, two other games I wanted for the holidays but didn't get. Later, my father and I ate at the Feast Buffet at the Red Rock hotel and casino, which a lot of people were in the lines in the time we were waiting and left. I also had the chance to start Kirby Super Star Ultra today, as so far, it's been a pretty fun title for me (and with some decent challenge, too).

I know your pain. You can add "not being American" to my list as well. Here in Nova Scotia, after New Year's, we don't have a holiday until Good Friday.  :x It's bogus. Basically January, February, and March (depending on when Easter falls) without a holiday. Other provinces have added a holiday in February, but in Nova Scotian fashion, we're the last to get on these things....but we do have a world class recycling program....

Yes, there are some enhancements present. The visuals in this remake have been updated to the style to the Game Boy Advance and the other DS titles (Kirby's sprite retains the original design, but is of a dimmer pink and is less shiny). The cutscenes are in FMV in Kirby Super Star Ultra, though they only play on about 1/2-3/4 of the portion of the entire top screen, and do look quite lovely. A few new (unless they did appear originally) enemies have been noted to appear in this, which include a snapping alligator enemy (I do not know of its name) and a miniboss named Iron Mam that gives you the Fighter ability. There have been a few multiplayer games added for this version, which are available at the start of the game. Though most of the music has been remixed, a few of the original Super Nintendo tracks have remained the same in this game (such as Milky Way Wishes's intro and the boss fight against the Computer Virus).

The only bad circumstances I've come across are that the music is quiet, regardless of setting the sound to surround, stereo, or mono, and no sound volume dial is available in this game in order to adjust the output. Also, as I suspect to be due to the size of the touch screen portion useable for them, the in-game icons have been altered to a simple, round-shaped design, meaning that for the ablities, they are no longer represented to be of small icons of Kirby with the ability, but of only a simple representation of the power (the bomb ability, which had Kirby panically holding the bomb in the original verision is merely a bomb in the remake). There may be more general differences present between the two, but I do not know enough about the original to determine them, nor have I yet fully completed Kirby Super Star Ultra at this point.

Because my Dad's birthday is so close to Father's Day (it was on Wednesday), my family and I usually have a double-celebration. My dad is an Astronomer, and really into space stuff, so I got him a DVD set of From the Earth to the Moon. My little sister got him 2001: A Space Odyssey, which she had watched with him recently. Mom got him No Country for Old Men, as he is also a big Coen Brothers fan.

My Dad's OK. We fight more than I'd like, but he's really a good guy. Last night I started showing him the original Metal Gear Solid, after telling him it had one of the greatest storylines in video games. We got through the briefing before he started to fall asleep. We'll start the actual game today, hopefully.

The words "innovation" and "rock band" do not belong in the same sentence, especially so when you're talking about the third game in the series.  If he didn't want to look like a hump for the creators of Rock Band, then he should've at least mentioned the DC's birthday.  :|

THIS, pretty much.

The only thing Rock Band has over the dozens of music games Konami's been making for 10 years now, is that they use music AmericansWesterners recognize.

and who was just complaining about f*cking mind readers?

Yeah, Rock Band is just SIMON to music. There's nothing wrong with SIMON - it's actually pretty fun to play with people, but I agree, Rock Band and innovation should not be in the same sentence. heh. I used to be dead set against Rock Band. My thoughts were, if you're going to play this game why not just buy a guitar or a cheap set of drums? I've since come down from that stance.

The same website thrashed Bill Wyman for having those opinions, but whatever point he had was lost on me. I stopped reading when the writer resorted to baseless insults. As a musician, Guitar Hero has never interested me but I did play it once with a friend and enjoyed it as much as any other game based on pattern recognition. Your right, it's Simon.

Sadly, I was the last to post in this miserable thread :(

Anyway, I still have fun participating in the upcoming pagan rituals surrounding Easter.

However, what is one to do after the eggs are safely drying in a flimsy cardboard box?

Aha! Yes, the dye can be used for many things*...

Happy Easter, pagans!

Also: Don't forget that Technicolor Jesus bread is better toasted.

* 3 out of 4 saviors prefer theirs toasted.

Happy Easter, folks. My daughter figured out that Santa and company don't exist, so I stayed up late last night making a scavenger hunt, instead. The scavenger hunt was always her favorite part of Easter, anyway (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

Now, I just hope DuckTales is as enjoyable for an 8-year old in 2012 as it was for me (as a middle-schooler) when DuckTales first aired (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

From a historical standpoint not much, The only thing that happened on the fourth was the Continental Congress Adopted the Declaration as the document they would send to Great Britain, which is why the silly Americans celebrate it on that date as the official beginning of the revolution.  It would take another month before it was signed and official.

Also that movie sucked.

I actually have wild turkeys that roam my town (mostly near river & protected forest)...but this is surrounded by adjacent suburbs, so they really are suburban turkeys.

Anyway, they are pretty awesome and travel like a gang. And they are friggin' big and impressive.

Obviously, I don't have much experience with Le Turkey outside of this.

Happy Tofurkey Day!

Hmmmm, I know the UK doesn't/didn't have Sabado Gigante, so Super Saturday must refer to tea drinking ceremony at the local pub...

It's the UK's version of Black Friday, where people do the camp-out thing for TV's. Price Gouging Abound.

Happy New Year my friends and foes.

Some of the best people come to these forums, people that I now call friends and in some cases your my dirty brothers from other mothers :) thanks for sticking by me...

....but I have lost friends or I have became distant these last couple of years here and in my real life with my personal shit/problems and when fuelled with red I can get down right nasty and take it out on others. It's no excuse and I take responsibility for my behaviour but I hope in 2016 as things are looking more positive I can patch the damage I have done and also start posting more here with double the hugs!

Just a little reach out to a place that means a lot to me and it's people.

much love with a reach around

Happy 4th, everybody.
I host a 4th party every year and I tag it into little FGC gathering called "3rd Strike of July". Do to current events, I toned it down this year and just  have a few folks come over to hangout and eat foods minus the fighting game heads. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and no reports of food poisoning (yet). I hope all the obeyers enjoyed the holiday!
