Title: WANTED: EGM Back issues from 1992-1995
Post by: doomfarer75 on February 12, 2005, 12:10:12 AM
I am collecting old electronic gaming monthlies from the days of the 16 bit wars of  old.  anyone wanna get rid of their old collection?  can be in any shape as long as whole issue is intact.  will also accept offers from '89-'91..especially early issues !   :)  Otherwise, does anyone know where I can find these issues?  ebay and 1up.com seem dry. Thanks:)

good luck!

I myself gave up looking for old mags on ebay... i was too lazy to save my favorite searches and such.

if you do find old EGM mags with DUO / TG-16 coverage, please drop me a line.  I'm looking for any coverage (i.e. game reviews).

I have a bunch of EGM mags, but far from complete. Once I scan the turbo content, I might consider selling them... but I'm not sure. :)

yeah..I too am interested in the turbo/pc engine content in the old mags....just can't seem to get enough nec lately since I got a duo,  supergrafx and a busload of games....these new  3D games out there somehow just don't do it for me like the old games do,  especiallythe cd games...I would love to know what issues you have that you are willing to part with. Thanks!

ok, if you are patient (i.e. month or two), I will have all the TG-16 stuff scanned and available on my website.  Prior to that, however, I'll make a topic in the general tg-16 board with a catalog of old VG magazines and notes on any tg-16 coverage.  Lots of GamePro, some VG & CE, some EGM, Gamer's Republic?, Die Hard (you know what i mean)...

If you haven't already, check out the TurboPlay Magazine Archives (see my sig).  Lots of fun tg-16 magazines for you to read.  In a month I'll have all but one issue of Duo World available for reading.

IF you ever stumble upon Duo World # 2 (Sept. / Oct. 1993) -- please share it!  I would love to have a complete collection of tg-16 magazines available for everyone.

Hey,  I have been to your site in the past and was very pleased and impressed....nice work!  I will get on there again..last time I couldn't access all the scannned pages.  I think its great you are including turbo coverage from other mags from the era too.  I think I'd like to have the old issues for the nostalgia and the excitement i had when I was a kid hanging onto every thread of news fora new Hucard or cd.  I played all the platforms but for some reason the turbo stuck and now I am enjoying a renaissance of sorts.  many games I never knew came out..like MM3,  beyond shadowgate,  Bonk and zonk on cd etc..its like one minute I was deep into the scene and then I phased out of it and never really went back until now.   But looking at some old EGMs the die hard ads and international coverage I still get excited..so I would like to get them all to capture the feel of the times so to speak any help I get along the way is greatly appreciated.  Good Luck with your site!-Josh

thank you for your kind words.  I have a lot a work ahead of me (to improve the site), but the only thing that makes it worthwhile is hearing some positive feedback.  seriously!  as long as a bunch of people are enjoying it, I know I'm not wasting my time :)

anyway, I too have been wondering about all of the final DUO software  releases.  I went cold-turkey on video games shortly after the DUO was released (my brothers kept me informed, but I didn't play much).

Anyway, I too have yet to play lots of these late-era games.  It really stinks that these games happen to be some of the most desirable/expensive titles.  My friend bought me a bunch of these titles when they were in the bargain bin at Toys R us, back in the day.  I wish he had gotten me more!  It would have saved me $$$$$$.

Even the stinky games... I want to check them out and see what they are like.  Camp California.... one of these days I'll be able to play it...

If I had any extras I'd be willing to give up, I would. I started buying magazines in 88/89 and have been buying, or subscribed to ever since. My wife gets annoyed sometimes at the space they take up, but I've had them this long so I'm determined to hang onto them. They're good research material. I started with a magazine called Game Players, that covered consoles and pc games, have most every issued of EGM from #4 to today, and a lot of the early Gamepro mags (I'm not much for Gamepro anymore). I missed some of the mid '90's EGM's (and EGM2's) but filled them in with the help of a store called Half Price Books. Not sure if you have anything like them around where your at, but they're are several in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area. We moved to Arkansas two years ago, and I sure miss those stores. We plan on going back for a few days either late March or April and hitting a bunch of them, so I will look and see what I can find. You never know.

Hey Nferno,   if you pickup any xtra mags down in TX  that'd be great..I will take them off your hands if you are wiling,  and they are within my interest range  I have a couple of old gameplayers too, one with castlevania 2 on the cover and the other with Link..(which has one of the 1st articles I have seen for the turbo and genesis...good stuff!)  -Josh

I'll have to see if there is a similar store to Half Price Books (with magazines) out here in Southern California.  There are tons of places that have books, but magazines are not carried unless they are a week or 3 old.

Yes, my wife hates all the clutter from my magazines as well.  check this out:

at least we're not that bad (though NFERNO1 might be coming close!).  my wife has wanted to throw out my stuff for quite some time, though.  that's why i started scanning some stuff and making it available... to demonstrate old smelly mags are useful resources and can serve "the greater good" of nerdom.

Never throw away video game related things if your wife says so! Just tell her it's part of your life and she is going to have to DEAL WITH IT. If I have a wife and she tells me to throw something away, say my Turbo Duo, I'll give her one warning and if she brings it up again, divorced.

Chill Keranu. Never said anything about being told to throw anything away    I have those same Gameplayers mags as well Doomfarer, lotta cool stuff in those. We plan on going on the 30th of March, so I'll let you know what I find, if anything. I'm sure we'll hit 7-10 different stores while we're there. I do have one extra mag at the moment. Its the first issue of GamePro. Being an ex comic collector, its just always a habit to buy multiple copies of the first issue of anything, and I've had two of those ever since it came out. If your interested at all, let me know.

The other fellow has first dibs, but I'm curious if there is any TG16 / PCE coverage?  GamePro started in 89, I think, though I'm sure it's full of NES, GB, and maybe some SMS stuff.  Anyway, I'd buy it.

ALSO: I'd be interested in any old (89-92) mags that might have TG16 / PCE / Sega Master System stuff.  I'd pay a fair price for them, plus extra to compensate you for doing this.  I can create a want list if you're willing to do this.  Otherwise, feel free to say "dude, that's too much work, I want to enjoy my visit to Texas" :)

I'm just trying to fill the holes in a feature I'm working on for my site (documenting TG16 coverage in game mags).  I will have a decent number of page scans from my own collection, but it is woefully incomplete (i threw out 95% of my mags in mid-90's).  I also threw away a nearly complete collection of BYTE magazine covering 80-86 (my dad's)... ahhhh, I wish I still had them.  Not many game reviews, but it was a blast to read about "portable" computers with built-in CRT monitors, 10 lb. batteries, etc. etc.

Nferno,  what is the content of that 1st issue, how much would you be asking for it,  and what kinda shape is it in?   On your trip to texas,  I am definitely in on that and will compensate nicely for any extra efforts.  I will also collaborate with steve666  by giving him stuff he doesn't have...hey my girlfriend has a scanner but I would hve to cut up the magazines in order to get steve his articles....is there another way?  -Josh

Hey! You guys would do the same if your wife asked you to throw out your Turbo Duo, wouldn't you? ;) (Of course I don't have a wife nor girlfriend at the moment, but I don't think it would change my mind :D )

I know the cover of GamePro #1 has a picture of keith Courage, facing the Altered Beast Guy, NEC vs Sega. It has been several years since I've even opened it, but I will dig it out this weekend. Its in great shape, no tears, or missing pages, or anything. I figure I'll take my trip, and see what, if anything, I find. When I get back, I'll let you know what I found. Part of my enjoying this trip, was going to these book stores anyway, cause we used to frequent them every weekend, so its no trouble to look, cause I'm gonna be anyway. I'm big on buying strategy guides, as well as mags. It had gotten to where I didn't find many more older mags I didn't have, cause I had bought a lot of them already, but it has been two years since I've been there, so I'm hopeful they'll have some interesting stuff. We'll see. I know that since it was a half-price store, the mags were about $1-$2 a piece, which I always thought was a little high for 10 year old magazines, but just so you know, in case you wanna have some sort of limit to what your wanting to spend. Then again, I may find diddly, and it won't matter   :P

excellent!  thank you for your help doomfarer!  I meant to reply sooner to this thread but i got side-tracked on other posts.

1. i would not want you to cut pages out of your magazines!  for selfish reasons I would say "yes, if that's the only way, send me the pages by themselves" ...but that's totally selfish!  we'll figure something out.  I don't mind doing the scanning myself (in fact, I'd prefer to do it)... so we'll see.  I would be more than willing to pay the postage (both ways) to send the entire magazines.  I'd scan the relevant portions and then return them to you ASAP.  I have trading references, plus my ebay account (stevek666), as some evidence that I won't scam you :) Hey, we all have to be careful! ;)

I concur with Keranu, the first issue of gamepro sounds awesome, if only for the cover alone!!!!

If they are still only $2 a pop at the 1/2 price store, I will gladly pay you much more per issue (for your labors).  I'll make a list of my collection to avoid duplicates.  Plus, I will work with doomfarer on this, since there is likely to be an overlap between his interests and mine.

Doom and NFERNO: Doomfarer has first dibs on all the console war magazines, plus any others he really wants... I'll take the remainder.  As I mentioned above, I'd be willing to pay for re-shipping magazines to Doom.  For example, I could pay for a bunch of magazines that Doom ultimately wanted, but I'd scan them first and then ship them to him, if he was kool with that arrangement.  At this point, I am most concerned with getting scans of TG16 content (including console wars stuff, if possible!) ... this way, hopefully, everyone will be happy.

stevek666,  no problem..when my new games get here 3 old EGM's come with them so I'll check those out for you too...but yeah,  I have some old ones right now with Much Turbo Coverage...they are in rough shape some but scannable i bet...we can figure something out.  my videogame-related email is ****  for more sensitive information..just let me know how we would handle the money thing.  To serve a higher power, You can have 1st dibs at the gamepro as long as I can see the results on your site:).   then maybe I can buy it off you later.

Lords of Thunder is sweetness as well. It's so hard to say which one is better. I might prefer Gates just a little more.
