Title: PSP - PC Engine Best Collection Soldier Collection - info?
Post by: drboom on January 20, 2009, 03:04:47 AM
So, I own a few of these games for the PCE already, but love my PSP and want to know if anyone has played this or read a review that talks about the quality of the port. Most info I find just says its comming out, but I really want to know if there is any blurring or other inconsistencies in the port that would make this a crappy purchase.

It's definitely worth the price. The emulation is perfect and it plays incredibly well on the PSP. I wish it included Gunhead/Blazing Lazers, but really what's included on the disc is great. Having the Caravan version included as well is a great bonus, as I didn't realize they were on there until I got it.

Thanks for the response. Looks like I will be picking this up then! I have a fat, so I have to suffer with that d-pad, but maybe it'll make me want a slim that much more...

It is not included because Hudson didn't make the game (Compile did) and it is based on a manga and movie.

gunhed never was a part of the soldier-serie. not even a little bit. it's just a misbelief, which is stuck in the brains of a lot of western people.

I just unwrapped my sealed copy about five minutes ago, hopefully will get my 2 cents in later today or tomorrow. I am now 3/3 on the PC Engine Best collection . So far the Yuna / Saphire collection has been my favorite to just pick up and play, but this one might turn out to be my favorite. Originally, I was only going to get the Soldier collection but I went nuts...  :-"

I can guarantee those games share some of the same sound effects though, unless I'm tone def. (which could also be the case)  Regardless those are nice games to have on the psp.  I also have a fat Japan 1.0 version PSP, so my lcd is a blurry mess.  If you want a better picture I'd go with a slim PSP.

I can also guarantee those games share the same hardware on which they do run

Funny, 'cause the first boss of Gunhed is in Star Parodia ;)

Bomberman is by Hudson, so that's no surprise. I don't remember any tetris-bricks. The game itself is a parody on the Star Soldier series, so it is suspicious that the boss form Gunhen would be in there. At the very least, it wasn't a US only observation that the two game were suspiciously close/similar. Maybe it's a play on that, or maybe it's a wink/nod to something more (i.e. behind the scenes if you will). Either way, I doubt it's just coincidence.

so is gunhed by hudson  so what i like to say is, that a lot of hudson and even non-hudson games getting parodized in star parodier, so that proves absolutely nothing that there are any coherences between gunhed and the teh soldier-serie, except of the fact, that they're both shoot 'em ups distributed by hudson.

according your logic, bomberman would be then also a part of the soldier-serie? ;)

btw: there is a level with tertis bricks as BG.

No. Not in the same way as Bomberman. Gunhed is by Toho with Compile contracted to do the game. Bomberman is solely Hudson's design and developed by them.

Sorry, your interpretation of my logic fails :P

But they don't animate or slide and 'click' in like tetris blocks. Magical Chase has the same blocks and I haven't heard of people referring to those as tetris blocks (lego blocks, yes).

those tetris-looklike bricks are 100%lty meant to be spoofing on the same-named game ;)

i know that gunhed was by toho (since it bases on the same-named movie and manga. at least the Titelfont :P and probably some parts of the thin storyline at the beginning and end of the game). and that compile was in charge for the progamming.
and exactly those two facts makes it even less a soldier-game. since non of the others have anything to do either with toho nor compile. they only share its genre and distributor (and once were paroided within one game) ;)

Bomberman is solely Hudson's design and developed by them.

so were the three official soldier games ;)

yeah. hard to believe but as sure as my grandma cooked the best eggs sunny side up :P

Don't forget the bubble level in Star Parodia! There is no doubt about the small presence of Gunhed spoofs in Star Parodia.

NEC originally billed Super Star Soldier as a "follow up" to Blazing Lazers in America because BL was one of their very few "successful" games here.  It was the same notion that was behind the dubbing of Ankoku Densetsu as "The Legendary Axe II" here.

That being said, Tatsujin is correct: Gunhed/BL is not part of the Star Soldier series.  Sure, you can catch similar sound effects here and boss cameos there if you compare one with the other, but while those may represent reverential "nods," they in no way make Gunhed a member of the SS series.  After all, Gunhed shares far more in common with Super Aleste/Space Megaforce, right down to the "field thunder" armament, than it does with any Soldier game.  It could be said just as easily, then, that Gunhed belongs to the Aleste series (a more easily supportable assertion since Compile was also behind that particular series and so many elements were similar between the games involved, from gameplay style to weaponry).

Anyway, Gunhed/BL is a standalone effort--not quite an Aleste game and certainly not a Star Soldier episode.

the only thing they do really share, they were part of the yearly caravan shooting competition. hence (except for super star soldier) there exist a special version only deticated for those competitions.

an other observation is the numbering from hudson. gunhed is #19, while SSS (#30), FS (#40) & SB (#50) shares the decadic-numbers. not really saying anyting, but just an observation ;)

I wasn't really referring to the debate you two were in, I'm just saying that Gunhed spoofs are present in SP. I don't consider Gunhed to be an official game in the Star Soldier series, but there is strong influence between the two series.

Tatsu - is that the Vol numbering you are referring to? What was the deal with the numbering? Is one game a "volume?"

yeah, hudson numbered their hucard games from vol. 1~61. unfortunately. 26 and 48 do not exist, which makes a total of 59 official games from hudson on huey:

well, in fact there are 60 hueys by hudson. blue blink (aoi burinku), is also released by hudson, but licensed to NHK for the TV series from osuma tezuka. so this could have been probably the planed vol. 26.

:)
