Title: BEST VID GM COMPANY RIGHT NOW
Post by: Blasta_Mazta on August 31, 2005, 11:00:12 AM
shin megami tensei: nocturne and SMT: digital devil saga are two of the best games to come out in years and i believe this series has surpassed final fantasy.

what other rpg is as consistently dark or as cool as nocturne? and the gameplay is revolutionary and a challenge, atlus knowing how to devise a great strategic video game.
THE SOUNDTRACK BEING ONE WHICH GOT ME AMPED FOR EVERY MAJOR BOSS.

DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA: finally a game for those into melancholy rock music. the constant rain drops reminiscent of seattle. "we eat to survive." finally, a video where the concern and objective is not to save the idiot mass population of a nation, but about one individual(s) pursuit for the ultimate happiness.

atlus has other games like stella due, which is also unique and a bunch of other really cool games. what they are doing right now is very similar to what squaresoft did when they got exclusive deal with ps1, making games like ff7, 8, parasite eve, saga frontier, etc.

my pointi s as a video game fan it's nice to see what atlus is doing. i just hope they don't mess it up like square did.

I really love Atlus, but personally I hate the Shin Megami games.  I've tried playing every single one that's come out, but there's always something weak about them.  Digital Devil Saga had a horrid story and characters, Nocturne had NO story at all and was incredibly repetitive.  And the main characters NEVER talk, I f*cking hate that.  The 2 Persona games were ok, but nothing to get excited about.  I don't get why everyone freaks out about the stories in those games, they're always the same post apocalyptic stuff that's been done 8 bajillion times before.

Stella Deus was awesome though, and Riviera is probably the best GBA game I've played.  I just wish Atlus would drop the Shin Megami games and start publishing some other RPGs instead, more stuff like Magna Carta (looks awesome, can't wait til it comes out).

i would agree with serph, i don't love him. but charactors like heat and argilla in digital devila saga ruled. he was an individualizt and argilla was struck by sadness and nostalgia for something she couldn't even remember. the house where a voice over repeatedly says "this is a story about a beuatifula princess and a prince" that was trippy and super cool. in that same house, instead of talking to townspeople for clues, you speak to townspeople in paintings. maybe you didn't like the game, but for me, who lovez sad rock music, this game ruled. i enjoyed every minute of it.

and shin megami: did you go into the labrynth of amala? i don't like devil may cry, but dante was sick in shin megami, chasing you around with his guns. i agree, the story at times was uninteresting, but i never took more joy in a game than when i killed futomimi, lord of the manequins(wasn't that creepy?). futomimi with all that talk about loving everyone, he reminded me of a communist, so killing him was the ultimate thrill.

most of all with shin megami, unlike most rpg's, you can't just go through it, gaining levels. ya gotta think, put togetha a strategy. i don't remember an rpg with more major battles, yet every battle provided a new challenge. the sick, creative and original puzzles in the game were really cool as well. giant towers that that reach tha clouds? c'mon, man!

all those things above is why i found it very easy to overlook the storyline in the game. the back bone of the game is depth of play and superior music. but alot of things that were said in the game made me think.

YOU HAVE DEMONS IN YOUR PARTY! YOU FUSE DEMONS TOGETHER AND CREATE OTHER DEMONZ! and there was so much strategy involved in doing it. i've never seen it, but the player's guide for this game is 400 pages. now what other game is that deep? what other rpg consistently dark? this was the first rpg i played that wasn't about saving the world and i had actually stopped playing video games, period b4 i accidentally came across this game. this is the game that got me back into video games, so for you to say thatthey should dump it.....well, why don't you go on the shin megami tensei message board with that rec  ommendation, lol.

Yeah I can see where if you hadn't played an RPG in ages and started with Shin Megami then it would be pretty cool.  I just don't think they do the post apocalytpic stuff very well, the first time I played one I was all set for it to be the baddest ass game ever, but after a few hours I was disappointed.  Atlus could have brought over more Wizardry games or Shadow Tower Abyss but instead they chose those megami games which is annoying.  Wizardry is a truly awesome series that started here in the US, but we've been getting shafted since Japan gets about 10 times more games in the series than we do, it sucks.

na, man. i've played chrono trigger, ff3, ff8, so your opinion that i hadn't played a game in a while and that's why i love shin megami is absurd. i'm very picky when it comes to video games. i played many super nintendo games and there were about ten games i liked.

and you only played the game for three hours, and gave up on it? you missed out, man. but anyways, the fact of the matter is, just like turbografx, shin megami is not 4 everyone. i, for one, wouldn't trade this game for any other game.

I think that the dark overtone of those games is way overrated. I mean yeah its nice to see a change of pace...but its still just a gimmick slapped on top of your basic RPG. Thats all well and good if you like your average RPG. Not a problem really. There hasn't been a great RPG out in soooo long it isn't really funny. Thats why I had turned to the MMORPG looking for a fresh start...but alas, while I loved the openness of the game worlds and the possibilities the genre possessed the fact is that people, communities ruin those games.

But, thats where I think that Final Fantasy XII is going to step up the RPG genre. Its got a nice mix (atleast it appears to so far) of all the cool things about FF series and the cool aspects of MMORPG's. It has potential. And before anyone cries fanboy, I haven't liked a Final Fantasy game since Tactics, well I take that back Final Fantasy XI had the best game world and some really nice things about it for a MMORPG so it gets a nod.

The 16-bit era OWNED RPG's with the exception of Final Fantasy VII. Most console RPG's since have just been trying to catch up. The problem is they are just rehashing the tried and true and giving them gimmicks and doing a good job at it. I don't know what the RPG genre needs but I know what it doesn't more slapped together, terriblly boring RPG's. Need stories, not gimmicks.

Of course what all this has to do with the topic heading is besides the point. I think that its difficult to say who the best company out now is....but I know who has some great potential....

this is the game that got me back into video games

This implies that you hadn't played any game for a long time, including RPGs, so my assumption was definitely not absurd.  And Chrono Trigger & FF3 came out over 10 years ago, that is definitely a long time in most people's opinion, haha.

first of all, i have played them on my snes, which is still in fantastic shape. also, by saying it was the game that got me back into video games does not imply that i haven't played any games that have recently come out. what it simply says is this is the game that got me back into video games.

at my cousins house, i always play new games, like grand theft auto and didn't care for it. i also played games like devil may cry, hated that as well.

i never liked games like breath of fire because i thought of them as a poor man's final fantasy. the main thing i meant when i say "got me back into video games" into buying games for the psI and II, which i have bought plenty of in the past year. it invigorated that desire to buy video games again.

but b4 that i was still playing my nes, super nes, getting all the endings on chrono trigger. i also played a game called saga frontier II and although i love this game beyond words(took me a while to get into it and understand it though) it didn't make me want to buy another rpg or any game in general.

i remember the last battle in chrono trigger, i found that to be extremely difficult, having to rely somewhat on luck to go along with sick strategy. that fight was back and forth, survive and advance, lasting a while. similarly, in shin megami there were over 30 major battles like that, individual main boss battles lasting like an hour, really intense.

if you don't like the game, fine, like i said, it's not for you, but for people like me, with discriminating tastes. but don't tell me the only reason i liked it, as if you have a complete understanding about what goes on in my mind. i remember when i played ff III, i hadn't played many rpg's before that, but i didn't need to to know it was a revolutionary outstanding video game. it's the way i felt while playing it, the amount of joy i experienced while playing it. that's what shin megami was and IS like. or when i read a great novel, i don't need to compare it to some other novel to know it's great. it is great because it IS.

I also think that Bioware is becoming a nice force in the RPG market. It has for many years in the PC market but with games like KOTOR and Jade Empire it is showing its muscle on the console....Now if only they would bring out Neverwinter Nights (or NWN II) for a console along with its incredible editor that would be something. That is my Favotire RPG of all time. I have been working on an Ys Book I and II Mod for a long time but constant hassles keeps it from really coming together.....

Nextech is my favorite company. Why?

Ragnacenty/Crusader of Centy/Soleil (Mega Drive/Genesis)
Linkle Liver Story (Saturn)

Splendid titles. Utterly fantastic games.  :o

I'd have to say that Konami is probably the best video game company right now.  They're deffinitly the most consisten, with loads of decent to incredible titles, but that's just my opinion
