TG/PCE Repair/Mod Discussion / Re: Duo RX loud scratching sound when CD spins
« Last post by opticalnoise on March 31, 2024, 11:52:56 PM »
Hi Keith and xodarap, thanks for your insights. I've done my best to take the pictures of the cd mechanism but if I'm still missing something please let me know and I will try again.

My main question before I try to do any repairs is why does the mechanism seem to work perfectly well when sitting on my desk as seen in the video I posted earlier, but scratches and rubs when sitting in its spot on the main board? While taking these pictures, I put a CD on the spindle and spun it around with my finger and I could hear the disc rubbing on something. I took the mechanism out and put it on my desk, spun the disc with my finger, and it went around smoothly and without touching anything.

Thanks again everyone

Brothers from a different mother! I too had recently played through SotN on my Chinese handheld. Those medusa heads in that "gear" room with the water STILL drives me mad. (the location where you have to hit the 4 gears till they "click" to open the secret passage). After getting an ending, I've been trying out the plethora of Gameboy games on the handheld.

I saved those medusa head clicky gear rooms until the end, haha! I hate those rooms with a passion. But I cleared 200.6% today! Woohoo!

Then I made it to Level 9 in Blazing Lazers, but wasn't able to beat the game this time. Still, making it this far on a little handheld felt like an accomplishment. I need to polish my chops before next weekend's MGC!

This is now solved. I found Pin 11 on IC103 went to a dead via and so did Pin 94 of IC501

These have both now been repaired and the console now recognises when the door is open/closed

It?s not reading discs but that?s another problem

That looks like a generic power supply interference. What power supply are you using?

TG/PCE Repair/Mod Discussion / Re: Composite interference? White PCE in briefcase
« Last post by majors on March 28, 2024, 08:46:35 AM »
I cleaned the PCB carefuly with ISO 99% and Q-tips and got quite a bit of brown residue but no obvious signs of damage, no visibly bad caps, etc. The only thing I haven't done is open up the IFU itself.
Obviously the "brown goo" was holding the video signal together :) <jokes>

If you opened up the PCE, maybe a wire got bent or too close/touching some component causing interference. I know it's pretty tight inside the white PCE and Cores. Maybe you could pop the case apart again and hook it up to the briefcase to see if moving the case flexing the ribbon cable makes a difference.

Lately I've been sucked into Castlevania:SotN again.

After messing with the RMenu Kai update to the ODE's, I started playing Powerslave. Originally, I just wanted to test the new software, but 4 weeks later, I'm still playing through it. I find the game to have great balance and pacing along with impressive performance for a 3D game on the ole Saturn.

Really an underrated gem.

Macross 2036 is for sure one of the underrated shooters on the PC Engine. Been playing on the Duo as well, so great.

It's pretty pricey these days though  :-[
