IS there any maintanence / mods that can be done to the older systems? Maybe a quiter fan? I think I need to take the thing apart and clean out the dust inside for sure.

There is a different fan you can install with more blades if your version doesn't already have it. I vacuumed my out through the vents twice a month and when I cracked my system open to try to fix it, it was pretty clean.

I'm also a bit concerned that my older ps3 will give out someday.  I remember reading somewhere that there's a mod to better control the speed of the fan so there's less of a chance it will over heat.  I never took the time to look into it.

If you do indeed end up with YLOD, there is a simple way that might help you get it up and running, at least temporarily, and you dont have to open the system in any way.

First vacuum the system, then take a hair dryer, put it on hottest setting, and blow it into the vents for 10-15 minutes while moving it back and forth across the vents, dont keep it static. This fixed my fat PS3 YLOD, at least long enough for me to be able to transfer the data to my new ps3 slim. I still had 2 weeks left on my manufacturers flaw warranty provided the void sticker is intact (a swedish consumer law) so i sent it in explaining the YLOD. I was sent a brand new replacement fatty within a couple of weeks. So i dont know how long this simple fix would have worked, but it worked long enough to retrieve all the data, which took several hours copying the harddrive. The professional YLOD fixes people offer online are very unreliable according to themselves, so not really worth it.

Worth to keep in mind, should it suddenly die and you still have the ps3 you just bought. Keeping it vertical also helps with less heat buildup. External fan systems might also help.

Couldn't find the page I originally found back when I was trying to reflow my system. There's plenty of info out there, I guess the original systems came with a 17 blade fan as opposed to the 15 blade fan in the later ones. You made need to replace the thermal paste if you change out the fan.

What specific model do you have?  There should be a CECH-xxx number on it.  Depending on the model, you don't have to do shit.  Take it from me, I suffered from YLOD, fixed it myself, and then had it fail 3 months later.  Then I bought a new Slim, returned it, and bought a used Fat.

Some CECH versions are more prone to failure.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

I have CECHE01 MG, the MGS bundle. I did a full clean, whats strange is if I just let is sit at the bootup screen (not even logged in) it kicks into 2nd speed after about 20 or so minutes. I just don't want this thing to YLOD. I took a look at the paste (didn't take the heatsinc off but could see the paste from the side) looks like it has baked pretty good. I am sure I need some new paste, maybe drill some holes on the bottom of the PS3.

Update: I guess 20 mins is normal for this model to kick in 2nd fan. Seeing if the 3rd speed kicks in while idol. Got all the dust out of this sucker, hoping it runs good. Maybe I will keep that other PS3 after all so I don't have to worry if it dies.  :D  It's funny because I thought I cared about playing PS2 games, but I honestly haven't played one in like 2 years, and I still have my old PS2 if I ever do want to play those.
