And yes...you too can relish in being picked apart and fed upon by the AMX autoloaders when you decide to give WOT a try. If you are lucky, it will be my AMX that nom noms on you.

My old boss was playing this all the time when it was PC only.  Looks like an awesome game.  Is this you playing?

Yeah its me playing. If you ever decide to get into it you have to be aware of the fact that although it appears very arcade like the game factors in a lot of physx into the gameplay, concerning shell penetration versus armor thickness and also sloped armor/angled armor. IRL if the tank had certain weak spots, those same weak spots are replicated in the game when at all possible. Studying the specs of the tanks, what they look like maxed out versus what they look like with stock parts, along with all major weak points will really help in progression. So will looking at tank reload times and how much damage per shot their guns can do. This way you will understand how long you have to peek out and fire a shot in between the enemy shots.

Anyone jumping into the game for the first time I recommend running the Russian line of tanks up to the KV-1 tier 5 heavy tank, then just grinding out about 200-350 battles in that tank until you become a somewhat confident brawler. If your kill/death and damage ratio is still below 1.0 after that many battles then I suggest sticking with the KV-1 until you surpass the 1.0 ratio. A lot of new players get the idea in their head that they can buy wins by buying premium tanks like the Lowe or Tog, spending quite a bit of IRL cash on this game, so they buy right away into the upper tiers then rage quit when they get their ass handed to them because they didn't bother to learn the basics.

This is a free2play game, and honestly you don't have to dump any cash at all into it if you play smart. You can make credits on any tank, even in a loss, up till tier 7. At tier 7 profits for losses are thinner, and repair cost higher, and it only gets worse from there on up to tier 10, but what you do is find two to three tier 6 tanks you really like and do well in and keep them around to grind for credits to fund anything else you want to do. My current tier 6 credit grinders are the Russian KV-2 and and KV-1S. The tier 6 French ARL 44 heavy tank is also a excellent credit grinder due to its best gun and awesome sniper ability. The tier 6 Russian SU-100 and German JagdPz IV tank destroyers are also excellent credit grinders.

Medium tanks, tank destroyers, and heavy tanks will see up to two tiers past their own tier, so when using tier 6 tanks you will often have to fight tier 7 and 8 tanks. Due to that for grinding you really want to pick the best tanks for DPM because damage output, not kills, is what pays the most. That means looking at the tanks and setting goals well in advance before going down the tech line. Look at the guns you get to unlock and make sure they are up to snuff.

Light tanks are mostly for scouting, and they will see 4-5 tiers past their own tier depending on the light tank, so I suggest not using them at all. There isn't much money in running them unless you go for the ELC AMX, or the other light autoloaders specifically, since in a pinch they can circle slower heavy tanks and tank destroyers and pick them apart.

Don't bother asking me about SPGs, they are for pussies and scumbags who want to do nothing but klik the mouse now and then and pretend they accomplished something. I'd rather eat broken glass then run a SPG.

Premium tanks are tanks you can only buy with gold or cash on the Wargaming website. Most people assume premium tank means badass winner, but in fact most premium tanks have some fatal draw back that keeps them from being match dominators. There are no premium tanks past tier 8. Usually what they will do with prem tanks when it is a medium or heavy is to give them weaker then normal guns. These tanks are mainly used to get free xp and credits. They do good payouts when you use them, if you are a good player, but they are a tad harder then normal usually to use due to the weaknesses they may present.

The premium tank destroyers in general are not bad though other then the British AT 15A, which is a joke of a TD. If you are a natural at sniping and want to buy a prem tank, Id recommend one of the TD's, or if you just have to blow 50 bucks on something other then a tank destroyer, buy the Lowe. The Lowe kinda sucks at brawling, like most other German heavy tanks. But as a sniper with a maxed out crew, cammo net or vents, binocs and a gun rammer, it can be a monster that delivers good pay days.

Concerning winrates, be aware that just playing public matches it is extremely hard to get above 49 percent win ratio. Matchmaker for this game is designed to team stack you with potato players often if you are a decent to very good player to make the game harder. I have to hard carry teams of idiots often due to my stats. Typically anyone with above a 50 percent winrate usually is in a clan and does platooning a lot to keep their winrate up, since a platoon of 3 pretty good players can hard carry something like 8 to 10 other terrabads often as long as they have a couple other decent players on the team. I don't do clan activity or platooning, so I am what they refer to as a solo artist in the game.

Anyway, my stats per noobmeter and WOT service record:

Wow totally wanting to play this game now after your description of the game, Prof. It's apparently more complex and fun than I thought.

If you put the time in to learn how to side scrap (with tanks that can do so really well, not all can), angle armor, and aim for weak spots it can be pretty fun yeah. Some tips?

1. Armor angling. If you sit directly straight in front of a enemy tank and they fire the odds are better their shot will penetrate your armor. If you angle your tank you increase the armor thickness, which means the shot fired has a harder time penetrating depending on the gun/ammo used. There is a excellent guide about angling and side scraping for beginners found here:
http://taugrim.com/2013/04/27/guide-to-angling-in-world-of-tanks/

2. Belly shots are key in brawls.  Many higher tier heavy tanks have weak bellies on the hull. If their tank is angled, you will stand a better chance of damaging their lower belly then the upper hull of the front of the tank. If they are angled and they have a thick upper hull then it is more likely to bounce your shots. If you bounce one or two off the upper hull then go right for the belly and try your luck if at all possible.

3. Hull down tactics. Due to lower hulls being prone to more damage from belly shots it is ideal to learn how to hull down, that is use small hills/inclines and the such to hide your lower areas so only your strongest upper armor is exposed. When going turret down make sure to remember to go down far enough to hide your commander hatch on the turret also.

Hull down tactics are best for tanks and tank destroyers with great upper armor and great gun depression. In the upper tiers the American heavy tanks and also the Russians heavies tend to be great at hull down tactics. This was a key tactic for me when using the Russian ST-1 Tier 9 heavy tank.

4. Group tactics  in close quarters and using cover. In alleys it is key when pulling off ambushes that turn into brawls on city blocks to use a solid formation and be patient and take turns. Not doing so will lead to missed shots and lots of team damage.

When fighting in valleys/open fields with only rocks for solid cover or brush for hiding, use whatever you can while preparing to fire. Always be mindful of finding and using objects for cover. Many tank destroyers can sit far back and will be invisible due to high cammo values, and they will pick off exposed tanks.

5. Weak spots are key. Most tanks have the same obvious weak spots in general. Some though do not have typical ones, like certain tank destroyers like the T95. Due to this as you advance up the tiers in World of tanks it is best to check the stats of the other tanks you will be facing, and also google for the tanks weak spots, and also your own, or go here to find many for a lot of the major heavy hitters in the game:   http://wotguru.com/weak-spot-guides/

In general though you can go by this as a common rule set concerning damaging obvious weak spots other then the front lower hull:
