sega saturn video card
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:59:17 AM »
I have been wanting to get a sega saturn video card.  I found out there's a couple different ones.  Do all of them do the same thing.  I know they're for the better mpeg format.  I picked up the Sega Saturn Lunar Silver Star Complete that has the upgraded mpeg video.  I need the video card to play it.  Do the JVC and Hitachi Video cards both do the same thing? Does it matter which one I have?

You mean the VCD card. The best one, supposedly, is the one that came pre-installed in some of (all?) the HiSaturns. This is also the hardest one to get obviously, because it tends to stay in the machine. This isn't the Car Navi one, just the regular Hi Saturn. It doesn't play Photo CDs, but supposedly the video quality on VCDs is better.

The only one to outright avoid is a sort of brand-free Chinese POS, which you'll probably never run across anyway.

Thanks for the reply Zeta.  Yeah I know the HiSaturn's have it sort of built in.  I found there's a JVC one.  I don't know if it will work.  http://buyeng.ebay.com.hk/buying/hk/display/190298668067_SEGA-SATURN-JVC-MODELRGVC2-VIDEO-CARD--USED

So they are all supposed to do the same thing?  So it wouldn't matter if it's the JVC or the Hitachi one?

They will all work in all Saturns, as far as I know. The only differences are video quality and whether or not it also plays photo CDs. BTW, there is also a "Photo CD Operator" card that only plays photo CDs and not VCDs so avoid that one.

The HiSaturn doesn't have it built in, it just shipped with the thing installed. You can take it out and put it in any Saturn. Its unlikely that anyone would actually do that though...

As for that link, for 65 HKD I say go for it. The label is all nasty but you can't see that once its installed anyway.

Keep in mind that the card will only work on a Japanese Saturn or a US Saturn with the region switched to JAP.  Yes, even if you just want to watch some random VCD or look at a Photo CD.  But I'm sure you're all set any way since you can play Japanese games.

Well I don't care too much to watch VCD's on my Saturn.  I mainly am getting it for a couple games that support it.  Thanks for the info guys.  It's purchased.  The others on ebay taken from the HiSaturn's or elsewhere are pricey.  Of course it's ebay and one of the sellers is our best friend with the games all on the shitty dirty floor. anyway the one you bought supports just NTSC video playback so if you using it for games then its fine.

Yep, just for games.  I was never into the whole VCD thing.  The quality was kind of meh.  Sure as shit was popular in China and other parts of Asia.
