They switch the polarity or the plug size or something, every time. My girlfriend had a Discman, a really premium late-90s one, that actually had a proprietary headphone jack.

Proprietary headphone jack?!?  That's f*cking ridiculous.

bandai did the same thing with the wonderswan (but to be fair, the port was also used for other things.)


Yeah, but that's kind of expected, isn't it? Overpriced accessories help lower the cost (or minimize the loss) of the system itself, and the Wonderswan was cheap. You don't sell a Discman at a loss, especially not this one which was probably at least $200. Sony later released even smaller/thinner CD Walkman units with standard headphone jacks. It was utter BS, which is why they only did it one or twice.
