Author Topic: Virtual Console can't come soon enough (Read 963 times)

After replaying Ocarina of Time recently via the collector's disc that came with the Wind Waker preorder, I dug out my Nintendo 64. I sold almost my entire N64 collection a few years back for a number of reasons, mainly because I couldn't stand the control pad, and since I loved the GC pad and figured that upgrades to my favorite N64 games were coming anyway I didn't need an N64 anymore. Big mistake since the sequels to two of my favorite N64 games, Star Fox 64 and F-Zero X, weren't nearly as good on the Gamecube.

So I thought about rebuying Star Fox and F-Zero for N64. In the meantime I went ahead and picked up Perfect Dark along with my order of Turbo stuff from Game Express a week ago. Ugh. UGH! I haven't played N64 in years and gosh, it looks terrible. The high-res support of the Ocarina of Time Gamecube emulation (and no doubt the component video out) really fooled me. What looked pretty decent emulated on the Cube looked absolutely horrible on an actual N64. I think I'm going to pass on getting any old N64 games and just wait for the Revolution's Virtual Console.

Speaking of the VC, anyone else looking forward to it? I'm not interested in any NES or SNES games because I already own whatever I want on those two systems, but I am definitely going to get some N64 games as long as the price isn't too prohibitive (max $20 for an N64 game). Star Fox 64, Pilotwings 64, F-Zero X, and Super Mario 64 are a couple that I would like to play again. Too bad Rare games will probably be unavailable though, there's a couple of those I would like to play again too (JFG and Banjo).

I'm really looking forward to the VC. It's going to really be a boon to the Rev I think with so much to lean on.

I don't think the prices will be anywhere near $20. Hell, you can get most of those games used for less, including price of the console. I'm betting $1-5 each.
And I also think it's a gimme that other publishers will do it. Seriously, it's money that's nearly free just except for the price of making it compatible with the VC.

I'm really looking forward to the virtual console aspect also. I really hope that it'll be possible for people to put new content on there kinda like Xbox Live Arcade. Although not too likely, I'd love to see some decent homebrew NES/SNES games on there.

Oh, it'd also be cool if SMS, MD, and PCE were part of the VC experience.

Nintendo just might create the video game version of iTunes Music Store!

The virtual console is good move by Nintendo. I hope they set all games to 99 cents (at least just for nes games). Anymore than $1.99 is a rip-off.

There are only two things that would make it better: access to japanese FDS/Famicom/SFC games, and ability to connect original gamepads (including SuperScope).

Hmm, I'm less optimistic than you guys that the games will be available for $1-5. I'd love to be proven wrong, but Nintendo has never had qualms about charging quite a bit more for re-releases. Just look at the NES classics for GBA. Yes, there is some cost involved for the cart and packaging that you wouldn't have for downloaded games, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see VC prices going all the way up to $20. That high end would be my estimate for N64 games. I bet Nintendo does a sliding scale on the pricing with NES games the cheapest and SNES and N64 games a bit higher.

Why aren't you using RGB? It will look even better if you do.

. Then again, if you saw the convex glass screen (it's a bubble), it's probably better that I don't have the option.

Perhaps in Europe. In the US I've never seen a TV with RGB input.

I think your missing the point tv's in the u.s don't have, RBG.

Only way to get it here is having a monitor.

Then then there's the option of having a XRBG2+ also.

I don't know, but I think RGB was seen as something for the professional / videophile market, not the general consumer market.

And, the success of VHS over Beta illustrates that the better format doesn't always gain widespread support.

I'm sure there are other factors, but I've speculated enough

There wasn't really any demand for component video inputs on consumer TVs before DVD. OTA transmissions and cable don't benefit from it, and VHS and laserdisc had their video stored in composite format if I remember right. Few non IBM-PC-compatible home computers back in the 80s output RGB, and most people used RF modulators if they used a TV for a display anyway. RGB output on game consoles was pretty spotty as well. So basically it comes down to very little financial reason for manufacturers to include RGB input on their TVs.
