I have an original PS1 modded by Snowkitty (RIP) back in 2009, and it has a power-button switching function that allows you to play US, JP, or Bootleg games. I think I spent a total of $40 on it back then and have been using it faithfully ever since. I think he also put a new laser in it and replaced some of the caps or something.

IIRC someone actually bothered to manufacture some plastic doodad that helped you do the button swap trick in the early PS1. It would have cost more than a mod chip to make so when those came out I guess that was the end of it. The convenience of a real chip is pretty high. It just plays everything, as if authenticatation wasn't even part of a Playsaion's job.
