OMG...Poor Bomberman :(
« Reply #15 on: February 19, 2006, 07:36:50 PM »
Oh crap, back in the mid- to late- 90's I was grabbing a late-night snack in my SUPERMARKET and they had a big bin of reduced PC software. Lo and behold, there was a copy of Atomic Bomberman in there! Naturally, I snatched it up.

I honestly can't remember much about it (I still have it somewhere), but it wasn't nearly as fun as the console games. It supported multi-player... but through LAN? I only played single-player for a little bit -- I can't remember if there was a "quest" mode...

Anyone play this?

Ha, I have a boxed mint copy of Bomber King (I am a Hudson fanboy who was curious about all their old games, what can I say?). Certainly not the greatest game, but I have gotten some enjoyment out of it. Not as close to Bomberman as I had hoped. I'll have to pick up Robo Warrior if only for the kool cover art :).

OMG! Speaking of Robo Warrior, I got one of those old NES Game tips videos, there's a walkthru of Robo Warrior from beginning to end, with a man's voice narrating the whole thing. Unfortunately it's been edited, they had to cut out portions of the video to save time.

IIRC you really have to depend on luck to get through this game, I only reached the final stage once but that was in the mid 1990's. Getting bombs is hard enough as

>using them all up on one screen and watching your player's life gradually fade,

>getting wound up in a boss battle with no bombs.

>Or trying to find your way out of the dark tunnel when you have no candles as you can't see the exit and what power ups you picked up!

But in the end that's what made it a fun game altogether.

Judging by the way that looks, it should've been a sequel to this game instead of Bomberman.

Robo Warrior (Bomber King in Japan), which basically is an action game that uses elements of the Bomberman gameplay engine.
It should be obvious because Robo Warrior/Bomber King is really a Hudson game as well.

OMG Bomber King!

I remember playing this game on my MSX computer 16 years ago. This game was hard (or maybe b/c I was 7 years old and every game seems tough). It sucks that I lost the cartridge when I moved to CA, I never got a chance to finish it.

I guess I'll pick-up the nes version someday since most msx games are tough to find these days.

So I played the 360 version at E3 last week and...it wasn't good.  Even though they allow you to zoom in and out using the L and R triggers, it never allows you to zoom out far enough.  I wandered around a corner and into fire too many times because I couldn't see far enough to avoid it.

And the look is just cheesy.  There's no better way to describe it.  But beyond those two things, it actually feels like Bomberman; just in a very weird way.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

Darn, I was hoping that this wouldn't play as bad as it looked. I'm curious about it, but I must admit that the aesthetics really turned me off and lowered my interest in the game...

I was actually a little more interested in the game since jleud posted, I think it's because he said "But beyond those two things, it actually feels like Bomberman; just in a very weird way." . Still, the problem he mentioned does suck and the style is scary.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

In case any of you missed it on my site (how dare you), you may be interested in what could have been the 'original' Bomberman. It was called 'Eric and the Floaters' and was released on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum in 1983.

Sunteam, good stuff! A few years ago I started reading the old MySinclair / Zzzzzap / Spectrum / etc. magazines from the UK computing scene (thank goodness folks scanned them and put them online :) ). Prior to that, I didn't know anything about the computer / gaming scene over there in the 80's. I didn't know that Impossamole was connected to Monty Mole, for example!

Apparently the camera perspective is on purpose and to provide more "tension" or whatever.  But to me, that just means that you'll be walking into more bomb fire.  Also, you now have an energy meter, rather than dying right away.  Oh...and then there's Bomberwoman.

All in all, I'm much more excited for Bomberman Land for Wii than Act Zero.

Here's a picture I took of the Act Zero display in Konami's booth:

i'm still a little wary about this. i wish they'd just follow through with their thought of taking saturn bomberman to the xboxlive arcade. i do hope that they don't try to pull any strange shenanigans on the 360 version of Dungeon Explorer though.
