Sega SG-1000 Appreciation Thread
« on: December 23, 2012, 11:40:49 AM »
Anybody here ever play an sg 1000? I have owned a Mark II for about 5 months with 20 games for it, and I love most of them. Gulkave, Sega Pitfall II, Girls Garden, The Castle, Wonder Boy, Star Force and more are all legitimate classics. I think it is a great system, despite people just calling it mediocre. Any thoughts?

Btw, Gulkave is a great horizontal shooter by Compile. The sg-1000 had some of Compiles first games. :)

I mainly play Mark III games but do have an SC-3000 which I use to muck around with Basic and play a few SG-1000 games.

Are there any SG-1000 games which won't work on a Master System?

Some card games are very difficult or even seemingly impossible to insert into a Mark III Master System.

Gulkave is pretty hard to believe. So many smooth and fast moving sprites filling the screen, topped off with nice (FAKE!) parallax.

Black Onyx is very impressive. Pretty much Final Fantasy style battles (only with animation) and 3D dungeons. Imagine playing that on Collecovision bitd. :)

Besides having the greatest game title of all time, Dragon Wang is also a solid action game. Again, very impressive given the hardware.

I've wanted to try Hustle Chumy for a while, it looks pretty fun.

It took me years to track down, but I finally got Wonder Boy this year. I'd tried it on the PS2 collection, but I really prefer playing SG-1000 games on real hardware more than other consoles. It may not play the same as other versions, but taken for what it is, it's again amazing, but also lot's of fun if you can appreciate pre-"8-bit" consoles.

Safari Race, aka Sega Rally '84, is a pretty amazing tech demo. The difference between the crudest and most advanced SG-1000 games is greater than that of the simplest HuCards and Arcade Card games.

Ninja Princess is basically Kiki Kikai.

I prefer the 2D Donkey Kong style and gameplay of the SG-1000 version of Congo Bongo over the isometric arcade.

All the SG-1000 games aside from the Basic carts work fine on a Master System. The colour palette is slightly different though as the Master System uses a different colour palette to the SG-1000/SC-3000.

Black Tiger, I have some of the games you have.Actually, here are my impressions for all 20 games of mone.

Safari Hunting: brilliant scoring system and underrated
Girls Garden: fun arcade like title by creator of Sonic
Dragon Wang: I would likeit more, but no punching, and Jonathan is impossible to beat
Star Force: better than nes version
Sega Pitfall II: best platformer on system
The Castle: great game, but easy to get stuck
Lode Runner: timeless, better than nes version(you can see the whole screen)
Bank Panic: good port, good game
Sindbad Mystery: better than pacman, lots of strategy
Ninja Princess: great fun, about equal to The Ninja
Monaco Gp: best game ever made from the 1970s
Golgo 13: lame, only 3 stages
Champion Boxing: utter crap, but Pengo is in it :)
Drol: great computer port, original music is cute and catchy, like SonSon but has more heart :)
Champion Ice Hockey: fun every once in a while
Flicky: awesome platformer, smooth scrolling, no iggys!
Hustle Chumy: Compile should have made more platformers :)
Gulkave: incredible, best looking game on system, timeless, on My Card!!, horizontal
Wonder Boy: amazing effort, bizzare final stage, but should have been made on cart with more memory. Decent game
Hang on II: identical gameplay to Master system one, but has music!

EDIT: Star Jacker: a very simple shooter, but it is similar to Monaco Gp in it's franticness and excitement, along with a unique gimmick. A highlight of the very early SG-1000 games

EDIT: Chackn'Pop: I just got this game today for Christmas, and wow, am I impressed. I can only describe it as a gravity-warping Bomberman platformer of sorts, but it's an excellent game, a much better port than the NES version, and has that familiar Taito charm

Despite having a small library, the sg-1000 had a high quality to crap ratio, and there are still another 20 more games that I want for this system :)

Black Tiger, Team Pixelboy is porting and translating Black Onyx for Colecovision, so I can take your copy off ypur hands. ;)

Still get it anyway. :)

I have the Mark II, which is much better than the Mark I, and much cheaper, too. The Mark III plays SG-1000 games, but with a much darker color palette.

Tatsujin, you make me jealous. I actually have more SG-1000 games than you, but all those boxed Mark III games make me jealous. :P

So, are you still using those nice looking HERO and Choplifter games? :D
