Tell me what you think.

I enjoyed this.

I don't like sports games.

But, with recent DuoTurboMaddenCD discussion...

Also, forgive me if someone posted this already. I've had a tough time trying to keep up with forum this week.

I think that hockey games are better sports games and that football games during the 16-bit era were more sports sims. The two games/series are so different that there's not point in comparing them. NHL should be much more fun for most non-sports fans to play.

And then there's Tecmo Super Bowl.

Sports is my least favourite genre in both computing and real world.
However there are perhaps 3 sports games I go back to on a semi regular basis
Fifa 96 mega drive
Virtua tennis Dreamcast
NHL 2k Dreamcast
I remember Brian Lara cricket for ps1 being somewhat enjoyable but I don't have it any more to verify.

I only know the basics of football and nothing about hockey but the article was very entertaining, thanks for posting this here Esteban.

I'm not really a sports fan and hate the absolute glut of sports games on the used market (pawn shops...... hell, even Hard-Off in Japan makes me want to wrap up all the baseball, horse-racing, and soccer games in a net and shuttle it towards the sun) but NHL Hockey was legitimately fun to play, usually with my brother, who WAS the typical hockey fan who would never shut up.

NHL hockey made you feel like a hornet approaching a wasp's nest, or Luke in the trench run in Star Wars.  Circle, and circle, and shoot, and weave, until you get a puck in the net.  Great fun.

about the article: grrr... how does a pro writer get that far while still writing the confused expression free reign?

I enjoyed NES Ice Hockey, too.

If only NHL '94 had overly chunky and supremely skinny players! Best of both worlds.

The old Cinemaware website had a blurb that essentially said, "The team at Cinemaware who created TV Sports Football went on to create John Madden Football."

I would like to learn more...anyone have the full story? The article in the original post hints at the full story...

Michael Knox left Cinemaware and founded Park Place Productions. Troy Lyndon joins him. Later, Jim Simmons, who did "audio something" on the original TV SPORTS Football joins Park Place.

....stuff occurs....

Later, Park Place Productions created John Madden for Genesis.

Agreed.

I also like Tecmo Super Bowl as someone else referenced.

Sometimes playing a sports game that's very simple is a lot of what makes it fun.

Too many complicated football plays or stat points can make the gameplay experience a bit convoluted.
