Your Megami Tensei experiences?
« on: November 05, 2025, 11:06:51 PM »
I don't know why, but I felt compelled to play through SMT 1 again after all these years.  I beat it before on the Playstation, but don't remember it too well, probably because I played it in Japanese with a walkthrough so I could stay on the neutral path.  This time, I chose the English translation for the GBA, as I still carry a DS Lite everywhere I go, and I was curious about the extra story points.  I admit, though, that I did save time by playing most of it in an emulator to speed up combat and exploration.  Unfortunately, I ended up with the law ending, as I didn't use a walkthrough this time.

My first Megami Tensei experience was Persona on the Playstation.  I had never heard of the series at the time, so concepts such as recruiting and fusing enemies were very fresh and welcome.  I got the best ending, too!

Once I realized this was a whole series of games, I ended up playing Majin Tensei next.  I was surprised that it was a tactical RPG, but I like those anyway!  THEN, a few years later, I played the PSX SMT.

I did complete the first Devil Survivor and got a good ending, but the experience was marred by an unfair situation I ran into a good 3/4 the way through the game.

Generally speaking,  I prefer the first person entries, which is why I've never played through the Persona sequels.

Strange Journey on the DS was good, but it is brought down by an unfair boss.

And now that I sat through SMT again, I have NO excuse but to go and beat Tengai Makyou!  So stay tuned for a report on that in the near future!

My first experience was Persona 3 on PS2. I really dug the music and setting, but really REALLY hate procedural generation in most of its grotesque forms so never made it through to the end.

Funnily enough, the 2nd SMT game on the Famicom has some sort of an additional soundchip (I think) in the cart which, to my ears, outputs some surprisingly Engine-esque music. Definitely worth a listen.

Jack Bros was pretty fun on the virtual boy.  There wasn't exactly a wealth of great games to play on there.  I would say that of the whole library it was likely my second favorite after Wario Land.  I didn't find out it was part of the Megami Tensei series until many years later.
Current want list:  TG16 Bomberman 93, SGX 1941

I'll have to check out that music.

I tried to play the NES version of the original, but the GUI feels too weird.  I'll probably end up playing the SNES Kyuuyaku version.

Jack Bros. does seem interesting.  Kind of like Gauntlet.
