The video game show
« on: April 16, 2007, 03:33:30 PM »
So Omaha is getting an Anime con. http://www.otakuomaha.com/ I'm volunteering for it.

One of the things I'm planning is a 'panel' (a scheduled event) called 'Console Wars:the video game show'. It will be vaguely structured like jeopardy, without the questions as answers bit.

However, since I'll presumably be dealing with more contestants, they'll have to be arranged into teams. This is where the 'console wars' bit comes in; they'll have to join the 'red team', 'blue team', 'green team' or 'black team'. I think the contestants can figure out which stands for what :)

Anyway, Part of the problem is I don't have a reliable 'buzzer'. I've considered using colored index cards, and whoever gets theirs 'up' first 'rings in', but I don't think I can do this reliably just by looking. Getting an actual videogame console involved in the game would be amusing, so I'm asking what game might serve this purpose?

Also, as far as categories, I've got 3 for sure: 'Name that (videogame) tune', (what it sounds like) 'spot the screenshot' (identify the game by a breifly flashed screenshot) and 'video game mashups': combine 2 videogame descriptions, and you must come up with the correctly mashed title: ferinstance, "In Sonic's first outing on the Dreamcast, Sonic discovers Chao's, skateboards, grass skirts, and eating." the correct answer being, "Sonic Adventure Island". Do you have any suggestions for other categories?

Thanks a bunch :)

A Nebraskan anime con? That's like an Amish strip club...

Anyway, I nominate Sonic 2 on the Genesis for the buzzer sounds. It has a sound test where you can hear all the sounds outside of the game, and some of the Casino Night Zone sounds are very appropriate.

And that description mashup thing, sorry to be blunt, is retarded. What could work is a word relation game (IE: I say Bowser, you say Mario, but obviously harder than that).

Well, I'm not so much looking for the 'buzzer sound' as being able to tell who pushed the button first.

Also, the mashup idea is used on the real Jeopardy all the time, so it is not 'retarded'.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Sorry, sorry.  I'm just so glad I'm out of Omaha.  It really is a wasteland for nerds like us.  Is Gamers still around?

This was done at the last MGC, only more Double Dareish.  I would recommend giving one team a question, and if they can't answer, pass it to the other team.  If that team can't answer, they can pass it back again and the original team can take the PHYSICAL CHALLENGE (err, GAMING CHALLENGE).  That allows you to laugh at people when they beef a game. Just make sure you make several of the questions really, really hard so that they will have to take the game challenge at least once or twice.  Another benefit to this setup is that you don't need any buzzer thingie-majiger, although you do need games, consoles, and at least one television.  But I'm sure you probably have those lying around somewhere.  8)

Yeah. You don't see their ads as much anymore, but they're still kicking around. And they still suck.

Hmm... will have to think about that one...

Gamers had some awesome commercials though!

EDIT: Not as good as Carlos O'Kelley's however.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

The person behind this avatar is utterly confused by what is being talked about in this thread. The person behind this avatar is not Mexican.

Taco John's is a restaurant chain, that originated in Omaha (I think.)
Think Taco Bell minus the rats. and plus Churros. Looooooooooove churros!  :D

One of their long ago jingles was "a whole lot of mexican going on, going on at taco john's"
Now they've moved on to Whiplash, the cowboy monkey. it's cute.

You Omaheads (Omarians? Omatopians? Omataku?) are crazy. I mean for crying out loud, your insurance companies spend your insurance money making documentaries for Animal Planet, wtf is up with that? 0_0 Like isn't that ILLEGAL!?

Omaha The Cat Dancer
however, is the f*cking PWNAGE.

Actually I am pretty sure Taco John's originated in Wyoming. Xiphas knows more about this than me.

Dirty furry.

But yeah, Insurance is one of those things that props up Omaha's economy. Wild kingdom was good back when we didn't have animal planet. Now it's just redundant.
Incidentally, have you ever seen commercials for Physicians Mutual? The spokesguy, Dave Weber, is the sports anchor for one of our local stations.

Yes, Wyoming of all places!
