It might be 3-D, but Tenchu is very good also.  It's a ninja stealth and killing game.  Very fun.

You've bought a copy of Einhander by now, right?

For 2D RPGs: Suikoden 1 and 2 (especially 2), Lunar 1 and 2, Arc the Lad Collection (mainly part 1 and 2), Valkrye Profile and Alundra.

As for 3D RPGs: pick up Xenogears (is in full 3D but done in a 2D like quality), Final Fantasy 7 (which I still think is great), Final Fantasy Tacitics (uses 2D sprites so resembles more of a 2D game, great strategy game), and Second Story Star Ocean.

Some good Action type games: Dino Crisis 2 (very fun game), Parasite Eve 2, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Resident Evil 2. All but Musashi which is 3D, have 2D BG with 3D characters.

***Definitely give Metal Gear a chance, did you at least get to watch someone play through a good amount of the game? It really is fun when you get into it. Might be better off getting the Game Cube remake if PS1 polygons really bother you that much.***

Some good Shooters: Philosoma (kinda neat with different angles on stages), Einhander, In the Hunt, and Raystorm.

Also try this light gun game Elemental Gearbolt from Working Designs. Of course some great titles period is Castelvania Symphony of the night (I personally like the JAP Dracula X version better. All the Street Fighter Alpha games are good. Tobal 2 is my favorite import made only title I have.

Dino Crisis 2 has to be one of the most fun and most visually impressive games on the system.  Final Fantasy Tactics is basically an Ogre Tactics game with Final Fantasy themes   You can hardly go wrong with either game.

I would recommend against the PS1 versions of the Lunar games. If you've played the real versions (the original Sega CD versions) then the PS1 versions will feel cheap because of how fundamentally broken they are. The developers thought they were clever, but ended up destroying the gameplay. Neither are all that fun when compared to the originals. In Lunar 1, it's virtually impossible to gain a strength advantage since the bosses level-scale with you (this is CHEATING), and in Lunar 2, the enemies are horribly unbalanced (it is not uncommon to get killed with FULL HEALTH with a SINGLE ENEMY ATTACK within the first few battles of the game...complete bullshit). I didn't play the second one long enough to even get into it as the bullshit factor made me take it right back to the store. I still own the first one though, but probably only because the cover art has a shot of Althena's butt. :D In any event, if the terrible gameplay doesn't drive you nuts, the badly used samples WILL drive you nuts; Nash constantly saying "Check this out!" always made me want to drive an ice pick through the TV.

I can't really recommend any good 2D games since I don't think I own any (yes, I own Lunar, but I said GOOD 2D games). However, if you're looking for a pretty decent RPG, I recommend Parasite Eve. It's 3D but just barely (in sort of an early Resident Evil kind of way). But the game is pretty fun, or at least I think so. Hard to explain combat in the game; it's real-time in the sense that you can move around and dodge enemy attacks, but attacking is turn-based using a timer (AT, or Active Time). Your AT bar refills at various speeds depending on the weapon you're using (I prefer handguns since they're quite fast). The storyline is really weird, very sci-fi-ish, which I normally don't like but here it works. It's a nifty little modern-day RPG (set in 1997 in NYC) but it can be hard to find.

Of course, if you do driving games, pick up any Twisted Metal. User opinion is split about the "best version", some preferring the SingleTrac versions and some preferring the 989 Studios version. I personally prefer the latter (TM3 in particular, TM4 feels slightly uninspired); their versions were much nicer...looked better, controlled better, played better overall. TM2 is ultra-cheap and is the only stain on the PS1's Twisted Metal franchise.

Thunder Force V is ugly, but it's still a very good shooter.

The only other games for Playstation that I really like are RPGs: Star Ocean 2, Final Fantasy VII, Alundra, Parasite Eve, Grandia, Legend of Legaia, and a few others.

Not yet.

I bought five or so PS1 games off of a single eBay seller last night for like $57-$60 combined. I always try to do this when I am forced to buy on eBay so at least I can get combined shipping and don't end up adding $5-$10 to every game from different sellers. They didn't have Einhander. :(

I'll get it real soon though.

Thanks everyone for the further recommendations-- I think I have plenty to keep myself busy for a while now.

Also, thanks nod for the warning about the Lunar games as I would eventually have picked them up (still might). Although, one of my buddies already owns them so I might just borrow them and see how I feel before I decide whether or not to bother buying them.

Oh dude, you need to pick up this cool turnbased RPG callled Eternal Eyes. It's kinda like Pokemon, and it has awesome 2D art and great music.

The intro was the first thing I ever uploaded to Youtube:

Thanks, I don't have Flash here at work, so I'll have to check it out when I get home.

Also, has anyone here played Jade Coccoon or Vanguard Bandits?

I got those games as gifts. I think Vanguard is a Working Designs localization, developed by HUMAN. It looks like a turn-based RPG along the lines of Warsong. It also looks to be polgyon-free from the screenshots on the back of the case.

Anyone know if these are any good?

Also consider Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, I don't think that has polygons...

Speaking of Philosoma,my import copy of it arrived today, complete with sticker sheet. I played it for a bit,def one of the impressive titles for the system for 1995. Now if I could just hunt down that crappy game I used to have, Twin Goddesses.....

Jade Caccoon is fine, but it is more like one of those: I've played every other PSX RPG out there, so I might as well play this one kind of games imo.  The pre-rendered backgrounds do look superb, but the monster system is very easly breakable once you understand it.  Some of my monsters were just insane and totally game breaking as they hardly would ever take damage and would deal enough to kill mobs in 1 hit.

A few words on Rhapsody as too: I think it is a fun RPG with many interesting characters to find.  However the main character is simply insane.  Her "magical ability" is to be able to talk to hand puppets.  In this world that isn't an ability I would go talking about too much if I were to be a future leader of a country.  The special attacks like dropping stacks of pancakes on the enemy are quirky but fit the overall feeling of the game.  The game also includes Japanese singing if you do not want to laugh your way though the english dub songs.

I still think Suikoden 1 and 2 are just really damn great. The many characters to collect, great 2D, awesome music, the castle/fort getting bigger and a bad ass story line (Suikoden 2 really is the one out of the two that polishes on all this). I never bought 3, 4, and 5 though.

I still have yet to play all the way through Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story (fighting system gets on my nerves though), Legend of Legaia, Vandal Hearts 2, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Front Mission 3 and Second Story Star Ocean. A lot of this has to do with the big RPG boom of 1998-2000. There was a long ass RPG game coming out every 2 months for 2 years straight. So I got way too ADD with picking up one, then putting it down to play another and so on. Where was this in 1995-1997? Then the PS2 came out and I just didn't get anywhere on those. I just recently started playing some of them again with intentions to finish now.

So far I have only picked up the following, all the very first day I got it:

R-Types
R-Type Delta
Strider
Strider 2
Final Fantasy Anthology

I haven't yet had a chance to compile a list based off of the recommendations here yet. Maybe tonight or tomorrow. I want to hold off buying any more until I get that list in order.

Those were actually the last games I bought in general because my wife bought me a 32" HDTV widescreen for my birthday. We've put that out in the living room, and in my spare time I've been moving all the consoles (except the Wii) that used to live in the living room into an extra room that is going to be a designated game room, along with the old 29" CRT SDTV that has a beautiful picture for old school gaming.

This whole process is turning out to be much more involved than it sounds because I'm finding I need to buy lots of new furniture to make this new room fit my vision. Not to mention cables, SVIDEO switcher, etc. At some point I need to pick up an HD-DVD player too because I'm finding out my old DVD player doesn't look too hot on the HD. I'd like to pick up a hybrid Bluray/HD-DVD player since it's still unclear which format is going to become standard but they are just so damn pricey. Add the fact that I already own some HD-DVDs and zero Bluray discs, I might just have to settle for the HD-DVD player.
