This evening I played through Crest of Wolf again.

I'd read that the Analogue Duo had graphic issues with this game during boss battles, and wanted to confirm.

Yep. Hopefully they'll fix it in a firmware update.

I finally found a decently priced copy of Horror Story finally and I am enjoying the game but....why can't I double jump WHILE firing? Seems like such an odd design choice. I can double jump, THEN fire, but if I am firing actively with turbo, I can jump once, but the second jump doesn't work.

(I am playing on an Analogue Duo)

I haven't played Horror Story for a year(?), but the jumping mechanic is rather cumbersome on real hardware, too.

NINTENDO 3DS:
I am playing Hellfire S (which i was playing on PCE) to judge the emulation. i never bothered with 3DS emulation, but my daughter told me i was dum and did it for me. It's pretty fun to use the 3DS like this.

got through Rabio Lepus Special finally. had to use a credit though, the last 2 boss-rush levels are extremely sneaky (4 bosses...then 5 bosses)! lot of missle management and the hitbox is a bit large
great graphics and color usage too

just beat Deep Blue   :cook:
if i was a kid in the 80s i would've probably been pissed with this game. but with the power of google in 2024, the game is pretty doable once you try to shoot as little as possible in order to allow your ship to heal
once i knew that, it only took like 2 tries. the falling urchins on the last stage can mess you up quick if not careful but thats about it. stage 3 is the easiest because most of the enemies go in a straight line pattern
i love the graphics and the attention to detail of all the sea critters. too bad the music is pretty lame.
but i definitely like this one, i prefer challenging games to be on the short side

the green weapon is pretty much the only useful weapon

Your manual dexterity and memorization ability will ALWAYS be superior to mine.

I CAN beat Riot Zone, but it's not too hard.

I used to beat Lords of Thunder with no continues, but that was ages ago.

On topic, I recently cheated my way through Jinmu Densho.

finally beat genpei toumaden. did it on easy mode, 1 life. then i played samurai ghost again after to remind myself which game is way better haha

i have absolutely loved loved loved samurai ghost for years, but the prequel was always too tricky for me. you literally have to use a guide in order to pick the correct path to get the 3 secret items. you also need a guide to know where the mirror is, even if you know the path for getting the jewel and sword. there's a lot of cool levels to explore but no real point if there's only one correct method.
if you die, you lose all your sword power and then you can't deal enough damage to kill the dragon to get the secret sword, and you lose the benefits from your secret items too. the difference between easy and normal is just how many hits you can take...doesn't make the platforming any less shitty. the biggest flaw with this game is you can't stand on a moving platform...you will fall off and then if you fall in a pit, you enter a penalty zone that has a non-zero chance of killing you instead

Samurai Ghost was always a solid A- for me, some of the best hucard visuals and soundtrack/voice samples, and very tight gameplay with an excellent enemy roster. they retained the big mode only, but add in some platforming and the items from small mode. the final boss is also pretty great...in the prior game is he a literally joke, i guess as a reward for getting the items?

genpei toumaden is more like a C+, definitely in the top 5 most impressive arcade ports on pc engine in my opinion, but i wish they did more to tighten up the gameplay in the home port. the only difference from the arcade is the benkei boss is a bit easier, because his weakpoint is his leg instead of his head. the options menu was also through a cheat code. such cool iceas, the whole game is basically a fever dream like that pu-li-ru-la game...but the execution is somewhat sloppy, and the big mode would be refined significantly in the sequel.

I never put any more time into Genpei Toumaden than an initial boot up on emulator.  It's nice to see a take on it based on how the game actually plays as opposed to a view (like mine) that's "This game looks like it's an entire console generation earlier than the sequel..."

I've been playing Kiki Kaikai and will likely beat it this weekend.  I've been on a shooter kick lately but also decided to just go ahead and use the turbo switches.  That's something I had previously tried to avoid but mashing a button with my thumb for a half hour straight has honestly been causing my old joints to inform me that no, I can no longer play games like this.

So, I have a bit of a story to share about Super AirZonk.

I think everyone's in the same boat that we all loved Air Zonk on HuCard right? I mean- it had everything, all the hype of a new (space age)  :bonkthis: game in a shootie, great reviews in magazines, tons of parallax!  A rad new mascot for the Turbo!  So when it was announced that Super AirZonk was coming out, I was so stoked. Even if it did get it's release way after the Turbo was in the twilight of it's lifespan in the US.

I remember ordering it from TZD and super excited for it to arrive. When it finally came I popped it in and immediately got hyped after the intro and level selection screens.  Then the stages started scrolling.

Barely any parallax, bland stage design, a lot of the cool transformations missing... It just felt... I dunno. Flat?  like, even the pacing is slower. I was super disappointed in it. I recall getting pretty close to beating it, trying to give it the benefit of the doubt but was way too impressed with all the other shiny objects (other shooters) available on DUO to spend much more time with it.

About 20 years later, and I finally jumped back into it. And hell, I gotta say. I have a new found love for it.  I think this sequel packs a unique series of final stage/areas and the boss rush is a heck of a lot more imaginative than the original. The final area even packs some ultra cool background animations and parallax!  Man, I wonder if they would've done more of that if they had more time?  I'm not sure, but I had a really good time playing through it this time.

Certainly, it still doesn't live up to the original, but what a crazy twist on revisiting a game I once disliked to say "Hey, that was way more fun than I remembered!"

Air Zonk 9/10
Super AZ 7/10

Give it a go!

I wish the original team at Naxat(Yoshiharu Takaoka etc) was asked to return. Only the sound designer was asked to return and he ended up turning it down. Might even be because they didn't ask the rest of the crew to come back? But instead, thru got Dual to do it, which I mostly know for making Psychosis. However, tonight I looked up what other pce games they did, and they did do some pretty good ones including L-Dis and Macross 2036! Macros turned out pretty great, though that doesn't necessarily mean that it was the exact same people that ended up doing Super Air Zonk. I'd have to sit there and look at the credits of both. Obviously Macross has plenty of parallax at the very least. And Macross has a bunch of different arrangements for weapons as well. Maybe someone will hack it someday to get it closer to how it could've turned out.

I'm playing Super Mario Bros 1, yes the port made by Tomaitheous. Not perfect but it's fully playable right to the end.

Heh, that's awesome.  I've not put much time into SMB that way, but I've played quite a bit of Contra on the ol' Turbob.

I was gifted a Bubblegum Crash so I felt it was only suiting for me to trug through the Eng translation. Typical Snatcher-esk click-til-you-to-talk-to-everyone type adventure. My appreciation of Bubblegum Crisis was about the only thing that kept me going. Walkthrough got me past a few obtuse sections. Easy evening playthrough, now it sits on the shelf to collect dust.
