I must be the only person who HATES the bumping into enemies nonsense. Then again, I never do seem to enjoy a Ys game for too long, whether it's Ys I with its insane hidden stuff ("gotta find the one correct pixel next to this lake") and impossible first boss ("this is the FIRST one?"), Ys III with it's... platforming, Ys IV with again it's first boss ("yeah, I like only being able to take one hit before I die") or the recent Ys game on the PSP ("I have to run along these ledges using the thumbstick, jump at the right times from ledge to ledge while avoiding enemies all within a very short time limit?"). I'm sure there's some kind of amazing awesomeness hidden within the Ys games, but I don't have the kind of patience it would take to find it.

So if everyone on here gets this game and hates it because its way too easy, then I'll probably pick it up. Otherwise... no. I stopped banging my head against things in junior high and I'm too old to start again now.  ](*,)

Wow. You're kind of a weakling. All you have to do to beat any Y's boss (except possibly the last one) is level up some more, and while that aspect itself is kind of lame, its hardly unique to RPGs of the time, or even today.

... You can only go up to level 10 in the first Ys and the XP jumps are huge. I won't say it's impossible to get to a higher level than where I was when I picked a fight with the first boss in that game, but I would have needed to be OCD and hopped up on Ritalin or something. That might have been true for Ys IV, since it seemed a lot easier to gain levels in that one, but definitely not the first Ys game.

If by "the first Y's game" you mean the first TG-16/PCE one, its just really not that hard. I've cleared it probably 15 times since I bought it in '92. I can probably start a game now and have the first boss killed in less than 10 minutes. No prescription uppers needed. In fact, I'm sure I could do it stoned off my ass.

I can't speak for the multiple versions of Y's 1 that came before the NEC one. They might be hard as nails.

Well, therein might be the problem. I've actually yet to play any of the Turbo Ys games. My introduction to the series was Ys for the Sega Master System. I'm actually not sure how to even defeat the first boss since half the room he's in is covered in fire that is an almost instant kill if you touch it and all he does is teleport on top of this fire. The first boss in Ys IV is similar (I played an emu version of the SFC one) in that he teleports around the room while flames shoot out of the walls which will generally instant-kill you (or at least knock your health so far down you can forget about winning the battle). I don't consider myself a complete n00b when it comes to action-RPGs, but after having my ass handed to me twenty times apiece, I gave up on both bosses and both games.

AH sorry to hear that! What's wrong with it? I'm curious about it being that it's an Ys game... how much of an Ys theme does it have? Does it have any of the classic sound effects?

I played at a friends ahile ago, only played fro a short time as everything is so damn small that it makes the game near uplayable, and def not enjoyable.  The theme feels like they just slapped on the Ys name to sell this steaming pile.

For the record, Y's IV for SFC and Y's IV for PCE are two totally different games.

I have the Eurippean version, since it's in english, & yes, it's terrible.  The one redeeming factor about it, is the music.  But, the game itself was not made or planned by Falcom, though they obviously bought the rights to make it from Falcom.  It was supposed to be before Ys went up into the sky 700 years ago if I understand correctly, but, that's all explained in Ys Origin from Falcom, that's a great game, great button combo masher, highly reccomend Ys Origin.

And for the record, remember everybody, Ys does not have an apostraphe, it's not plural. :D

Right, and I should have been specific with my first post about the Ys series. I so far haven't played ANY of the Turbo Ys games. I'm not sure when I will either, though, considering how much I dislike the ones I HAVE played. Ys is one series that I really really want to like, but since I haven't had much luck with the others, I can't see paying $30 apiece for the ones on the Turbo.

And at any rate, I really don't like crashing into enemies. I want to feel like I have some control over whether or not I get hit. Imagine if you were playing a shooter and you were forced to ram your ship into all the enemies. If you didn't want to be destroyed you had to ram them from behind (wow, that doesn't even sound good). Furthermore, if you aren't strong enough, even doing that will cause your ship to be damaged. Does that even make any sense? If I have a sword and I'm good at dodging, I should be able to dodge. Doesn't matter how strong I am. At least give me the CHANCE to. So yeah, not a fan of the ramming.

Charge straight into enemies = YOU get hit.  Charge into them so that only your right or left side (not middle) makes contact with them = THEY get hit.  You have control.  The power is up to you.

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

You know, as long as you're powerful enough to damage the boss, you can beat him without taking a single hit of damage from the flames. The main issue with Ys SMS is leveling high enough to be allowed to damage a boss, even though they can all be beat without taking any damage by proper dodging/attacking.

Ys I & II PCE is completely different. Ys I in particular has been dumbed down to be super noob-friendly and extremely short.

If you try either Ys again, you should grab the Golden Vase from the pond in the field, sell it at the pawn shop, buy the ring and give it to the guy in the bar then buy (if I remember correctly) the second cheapest sword and shield and armor. Then go talk to Sara(?) to get the crystal.

In a few minutes you'll go up a couple levels or more and have a good set of equipment without fighting a single enemy. You could probably already damage the first boss in the PCE version, but might need to go up a level in the SMS version. But it'll be easier to level up since you can fight tougher enemies (thieves around the shrine?) with your better sword and gained levels.

Trailer looks cool. I'll probably end up springing for a pawnshop DS if the price is right.
