Title: Game Gear RGB
Post by: HercTNT on October 27, 2012, 04:04:38 PM
I want this, anyone have any idea how hard this would be to do? any one willing to take it on?

I've been wanting to tackle that project for quite some time.  That's easily a whole day's work for me, though.  I always thought it would be tool to use a project box to make a consolized GG, wired up to use an SMS controller.  You can just put the start button on the console itself.  Of course if I did all that, it would take more than one day, probably.

I'm only looking for the tv-out part of the mod. It is supposed to support rgb+sync. i could output my gamegear to my upscaler via vga cable then to my lcd. i would imagine it would look extremely cool. would basically just use the game gear as a controller.

I got the premade kit for this. Hope to have time to work on it some day.

Do you have a link of where to get such a kit? This mod looks a bit out of my league building from scratch.

Yeah.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~stinkyfist/reviletim/ggtv/ggtv.htm

You have to E-mail the guy. When I got one earlier this year, he said I got the last one. I hope he's made more since then, but I have a feeling the link to this page that was put up on Cinemassacre a half-year or so ago generated some considerable interest.

I just e-mailed him as well.  I didn't realize that someone was selling kits.  That makes it way easier.  I'm glad that no one bought my Game Gear collection when I had it up for sale.  Making a consolized version will be a cool winter project.

I have a game gear that appears to be on it's last legs.  It works "sometimes" (games take a couple of tries to finally work) and screen is pretty dim.  No sound either.
If anybody wants it as a project/guinea pig, let me know.  All I ask is shipping.

Yeah, but if you use it to add TV-out to your GG, or use it to make a consolized GG, how much would that then be worth?  Unless he wants like $100 for the kit, I'll probably order one.

That's how I feel.  The GG has such a crappy screen that I just don't want to play it.  But if it was consolized and set up to use an SMS controller (or whatever,) that would be pretty sweet.

Yea, like i said, if i can use the gamegear as a controller to play the games on big screen i will be set. the game gear does have some great games.

i still say a proper board needs a scaler.
it can be a single frame scaler based on the GG native res.
think of this, take the native res (dont know what it is)
feed the output from the GG to a frame buffer.
read the frame buffer at a slower pixel rate + line doubling.
can be done with 0.5 to 1 frame delay.

the GG does have a blanking signal and pixel clock, that would make sampling easy

I think the japanese guy who made a SMS lookalike for his consolized GG included a scaler.

Sure a scaler would be nice but for my part just getting a gg to display on a TV will be an awesome start.

Post by: kazekirifx on November 21, 2012, 12:29:01 PM
If you're willing to shell out the money, you can use an XRGB or XVGA from Micomsoft for the scaling. That's what one dude did.

Title: Re: Game Gear RGB
Post by: kazekirifx on November 21, 2012, 06:16:52 PM
Personally, I don't think it really needs to be scaled. Might as well play it at the native resolution, even if it doesn't use the whole screen.
I have an XVGA-1Pro, but I'm not really planning to use it with my TV Game Gear once its finished.

id go over it with a scope, and find the points
once you have sync, hook it to a tv through a resistor, and start adding other signals (you will know it when you see it)

omp on Sega16 might know, he's done a fully modded GG with the first version of this board and 2 player compatability.

I just got my board from tim as well but haven't installed it yet though.  Very nicely packed, he put the board in an anti-static bag and then packed it all well in a box so it got to me safely.  I'm in the US btw and the box he used was big enough to fit multiple boards in without any issues if you guys wanted to do a group order.

Very nice, I've been thinking on and off about making a consolized GG myself as I have two laying around, one of which needs a new cart port. However, I'd ideally stuff everything in a plastic project box as opposed to cramming everything into the GG case, as I want to have controller ports and an 8-pin DIN jack for RGB.
Title: Re: Game Gear RGB
Post by: turbokon on December 11, 2012, 12:11:33 AM
Yeah that's a good idea to stuff everything inside a plastic box. I'm finding the gamegear doesn't have room for an LCD mod. There is just no room to stuff the lcd's pcb. Anybody else have any ideas as to make the LCD mod fit inside the gamegear?

Install the rgb board isn't to hard if you know where the soldering points are. Using Tim warington I would say 3.  Here are a couple pics if the LCD mod.

yes, with a custom LCD controller
most LCD panels do "data good" scaling (supported by the GG LCD controller
would just require a custom programmed microcontroller

Title: Re: Game Gear RGB

SMS mode - all you do is ground a pin from the cart port to a chip nearby. Very straightforward. All this does is enable SMS. I then use a Mega Everdrive and load SMS roms on it. Not all games work, I recall Ys 1 not working properly, but all the other games I have tried work great. I just added details here on the pins that need to be connected.
