So this looks to be the "all in one" type machine that I've been looking for. My portable gaming needs "fulfilled," I wanted to ask the PCEFX brain what tips and info you all can give me on making the Go even better.
I've been looking at this for modding: http://www.pspmod.com/forums/psp-modification/73911-psp-go-hack.html
and some emulators, mainly retro stuff.
Anyway, tips, ideas, impressions are highly welcomed.

PSP Gos are pretty nifty devices. You can use a PS3 controller via bluetooth connection to play games on your TV. The built in memory storage can hold quite a few games. Modding the system is as easy as can be. All you have to do is install the firmware and you are good to go. I'll admit, I use nothing but PSP ISOs that I download off of rom sites, and they work great. I haven't tried it with emulators, but I recommend the PSP Go. I got mine from Gamestop when they were liquidating their stock of systems.

I was actually considering a vita recently. but this thread has me thinking...

I gave up on tablet gaming, even with emulation and control pad support. With the Go, Mame and the entire 8 - 16 bit emulation roster can be had in a great form factor. There's also the ISO thing Chany mentioned.
I would imagine that the PSN store might be off limits with the system modded, but I haven't checked, and I maybe have a handful of reg psp games that I'd want to try out/own.
The price point on them is REALLY good, I found a CIB white one for $70ish.
The Vita looks awesome no doubt, just doesn't "solve" my gaming wants like the Go.
-
PSN off limits, yes. worth it, yes.
as far as hacking, install the PRO firmware (i think it's pro C3 now?)
just be sure that you read the documents first, get the latest permanent version.
-
Actually, the best thing about the new PRO CFW is that you can reboot your PSP back into OEM mode (6.6 I think) and still access the store. Then when you want to do hackin' and homebrewin' just soft reboot back into custom mode.
I personally think there is a lot of great benefits to the Go compared to the regular PSP. I own a lot of the games but almost never play the UMDs themselves since ISOs are so much faster. And bluetooth is super duper nice for the dualshock pairing, plus component out from the device. It seriously is an awesome way to play PSP games as a console.
-
The go is great for use like a console using video out and controller pairing, but its smaller screen and awkward control layout make it inferior to a normal PSP for handheld gaming.

I can see that, but then again I am used to playing on a GBA and a G1 Android phone, so it's actually a step up from my current situation. lol ;)
What are some good emulators for the system?
I have found the following so far
psphugo (PC engine) hope that it is at least as good as PCE emu on android
Cps2psp (Capcom)
DGen (Genesis)
mvspsp (Neo)
Snes9X (...do I have to write it?)
and a GBA emu

This sums it up. I have my Go on 6.6 PRO docked on the official Sony charging dock. I have component cables for video out and a PS3 controller specifically for it. I have a 16gb M2 in it, for 32gb of total space.
I use my PSP 2000 for ripping my UMDs and playing them on my Go. Its a great setup, but playing the Go itself cramps my hands, and I'm a smaller guy, only 5'4 or so.

A few months ago when GameStop started clearing them out for 49.99-59.99 each quite a few of us on here got one. Myself, Chop5, Necromancer, Chany60126 among others. They're quite useful.

get a 3DS :)

get a 3DS :)
or don't ;)

I quite dig the 3DS and have had a chance to play quite a few of the games on it. The PSPGo just does it for me right now. I'm hoping the Vita price drop plummets the value on the Go.

why? how can one refuse to play these awesomes games in real 3D?

Nando, PSPHugo isn't very good. Also, don't expect any MAME port on the PSP to run well. I find SNES9X_TYL and the ME ports to be decent, but still a lot of frameskip is needed for a good chunk of the game library. There are some "OK" ports of Final Burn Alpha that will play some CAVE and other shooters. [e]mulator is what I used to use for PC-Engine. It also does Super Grafx.

I have a psp go and use it mainly for emulation.
NES, TG16 and Genesis work wonderfully. Neogeo works very well for most games. GBA emulation is spot on for most games.
SNES runs like shit :(
Still worth it though. I've got a cradle with mine, component video out and use a ps3 controller with it.
The only issue is that when you're playing a game using video-out the picture only takes up about 3/4 of the screen. This can be fixed by either (1) paying extra for a convertor (2) using a Sony PS3 3D display as the monitor. I use the latter as it's a nice monitor that I got cheap.
-
Great input! Thank you all.
Odd thing about the snes emu b33r.which emu do you use?

I'm jealous! I meant to grab one of those 3D tvs when they were on clearance for like $100 but they were all out of stock here.

Snes9x I believe. I need to skip frames like crazy for it to play, but then its very choppy because of all the skipped frames

That's what I paid for mine. I love the fact that its got a PSP zoom mode. Makes PSP games full screen :)
I sometimes see them used cheap. Keep your eyes open.

Have you heard of SNES9X EUPHORIA [R5 B3 - NoME v0.2]

i've used euphoria, but he snes9x_tyl me versions are the better choice. Euphoria crashes often when i used it.

I was also thinking about a PSP Go. I was ok with the download-only approach since I don't have any PSP games to begin with. Someone said they saw some for $40-50? That sounds pretty legit! (especially considering that Neo Geo X thing that's still stuck at $100.)

I'd do a PSP 3000 instead. Not a big fan of the Go.
You can still easily boot CFW on it, use it for whatever you'd like, and have access to a few excellent UMD only games that can't be played on any other system.

or you can go the go route, still boot CFW with ease, use it for whatever you'd like, and then run isos of the umd only games that can't be played on any other system.
seriously, the bluetooth controller + docking station route is the way to go
-
...but if you have CFW you don't need to worry if it was dl only or UMD only. So really it just depends on what model you personally prefer. If you are planning on buying UMD's I would do what others mentioned and get a psp 3000. If you plan on being a dirty pirate then just go with whatever system you mainly prefer. :D
-
Even if you're gonna buy UMDs, go with CFW and isos for less load times and better battery life.

Yargh?
so these things are pretty inexpensive on the ebays, the local used game places are charging WAY too much, even when calculating shipping costs. That's pretty rare.

(2) using a Sony PS3 3D display as the monitor. I use the latter as it's a nice monitor that I got cheap.
I'm not a fan of it at all. It's got around 2 frames of input lag. The most important thing in a gaming display and Sony absolutely dropped the ball with their Playstation brand monitor.

I had heard that they were really unreliable; even that many were DOA.
is this true?

I heard the same thing, the advice of the day when Best Buy was clearancing them is buy it for $99, and get the extended warranty since you'd need it within a year. Despite the negatives I'd drop the $100 for 3D and PSP scaling, they were just sold out near me :(

Just picked up a new PSP Go off ebay and and would love to know how to do the following:
Convert my existing PSP games to files so I can load them on my PSP Go
Play Sega, NES, SNES, Turbo Duo &Neo Geo games on it.
Most of the forums that I have looked up on the net seem to be dead on the PSP. Is there some place in particular that I should go to figure out how to do all this? Can someone point me in the right direction?
-
I don't think there is a way (legally) to turn your physical UMDs into files to play on the Go. When the Go first came out I remember that being an issue many people were ticked off about.
As far as all those other games, I think you need to install a custom OS or something and then load the emu of your choice. I believe there's actually a few links to that in this very thread.
-
You'd need a system with a UMD drive in order to convert UMDs into data files.
What you're looking for is CFW (custom firmware) 6.60. Now that you know what it's called, information should be very easy to find. It's literally one program to download and run; installing CFW on the PSP is ridiculously easy. The best part is that you can very easily go back and forth between the CFW and the official firmware, giving you access to everything ever.
-
Got the 6.60 software downloaded and have a PSP slim to download it on and a link to a Youtube video that shows how to do it. Now I need to know where to get the emulators for each system.....and some games.
-
iirc, 6.60 won't be permanent on a go.
i think mine's on 6.20, the last one that would simply boot into CFW.

Can't do any torrents. I kinda ran into some legal trouble with some downloads that required hiring a lawyer to clear up. No joke. I'm done with torrents. Now if anyone is going to Octoberfest has a bunch of Roms they would let me leech a copy of, I'll bring my laptop and a external HD drive. I'd even kick in a few bucks to make it worth while to anyone who would help me out. I'd only be interested in specific titles that I actually own.

I don't use torrents either, but if you're still willing to download stuff off the interwebs there is emuparadise, or sites like rapidshare. If there is a game I want to play I normally search "GAME NAME iso download" or something similar and hunt out the rapidshare/mediaupload/etc links and use those. There's also always IRC if you're devoted. ;)
