Title: Best Sega genesis games
Post by: munchiaz on April 09, 2014, 05:45:16 AM
Since i just did the group buy for the Megaever drive, what better time than now to have a discussion about some of the best Sega genesis games . Discuss favorites, gems, hell even talk about the games that should be avoided. I'll start.

One of my favorite games for the genesis is Street of rage 2. Streets of rage was one of my first memories with the console, playing it at my cousins house.  I remember my mom saying " this game is stupid, all you do is walk forward and beat people up"

A few years after that, my upstairs neighbor had a genesis, and had a copy of streets of rage 2. I was hooked after that point, and borrowed a genesis from a friend to play that game. I then discovered great games like splatterhouse 3 (still scares me to this day) comic zone, and sonic.

A few of my friends had the genesis while I had the turbografx growing up.  There are some genesis games I liked when I'm not obeying.  These come to mind:

Streets of Rage 1 & 2
Shinobi III
Sonic
TMNT
Arrow Flash

You can just pick and choose from that list. A few I have are just what others would consider  average or some just hate, but since you are just running roms its not life or death. I still need to pick up Shinobi 3, Lightning Force, Gunstar Heroes, and a few others to round my collection off. Right now though I am working on Sega CD and 32x stuff, which is a discussion for another day....

Sonic titles are obviously a staple, but they are cheap to own. Jurassic Park also looks really good given the time they had, but isn't hard to find.

Some favorites of mine that are pricier and good to play on the flashcart:
Alisia Dragoon
El Viento
Trouble Shooter 1 & 2
Arrow Flash
Gaires
Twinkle Tale
Panorama Cotton
Gley Lancer
Alien Soldier

A lot of the JP titles have fan patches for translations.  There are some big name RPGs that have been translated too, like Langrisser II and Nadia.

Not a big genesis fan, and I don't own many of it's games. I'm not even much of a Sonic fan.

That said, I really do enjoy these.

Strider
Chiki Chiki Boys
Wonder Boy Monster World
Sonic CD (does this count?)
Rolling Thunder 2
Castlevania Bloodlines

Just curious, which ones do you feel aged poorly? Going back over a few I have found myself thinking the same thing about the Genesis version of The Terminator, Lethal Enforcers, and a few others.

Lot's of goodies already listed.

I'll second (or third, fourth, whatever):
Castle of Illusion
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Gunstar Heroes
Lightening Force (yes, the game is mis-spelled)
Streets of Rage 1 & 2
Thunderforce III
Vectorman
Wings of Wor
Wonder Boy in Monster World

I didn't see these listed already but I wasn't really paying attention. :P
Beyond Oasis
Final Zone (I like it, may not be everyone's cup o' tea)
Forgotten Worlds
Hellfire
Revenge of Shinobi
Sol-Deace (hard as nails but has lot's of neat graphical things going on)
Sunset Riders
Steel Empire (Fun steam-punky shootie)
Virtua Racing (I don't know if this would run on one of those everdrives, but it's pretty impressive to see all that 3d on the Genesis)

Twin Cobra isn't nearly as good as Kyukyoku Tiger on the PCE, but it has a pretty boss soundtrack.

Dragon's Revenge is Tengen's miserable attempt to make a sequel of Devil's Crush/Crash.  It's pretty bad, but probably worth checking out if you're into Devil's Crush (and who isn't?)

I've also put way too much time into Flicky.

To add to the list I would say:

Phantasy Star 2 & Phantasy Star 4
Ranger-X (Ex-Ranza)
Arrow Flash
Golden Axe
Rocket Knight Adventure
Bio Hazard Battle
Gynoug

Lot's more but those are just off the top of my head that was listed in the thread (or I couldn't see from the glance I had :D)

Don't think I saw it on anyone's list, but my gf and I enjoy playing Haunting: Starring Polterguy together.

Just played Hyperstone Heist with my friend the other day and had a blast too.

Also, can't forget the overlays in Road Prosecutor :P

Without reading anyone else's posts and thereby tainting the jury, here are my favorites:

Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2 - Sonic was the first game I had because it was the pack-in when I got my system.  I used to hate Sonic 2 until I realized that you can disable Tails in the options menu.

Streets of Rage II - Might be my all-time favorite video game.

Bare Knuckle III Fan-Translation - Sooo much better than Streets of Rage 3.

Golden Axe - Also one of the first Genesis games I ever played.  I also remember playing the arcade cab at a Round Table Pizza BitD.

Ghouls N' Ghosts - Needs no explanation.

Kid Chameleon - Neat platform game, but is LOOOONG as f*ck and has no save option.

Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II - Because Ayrton Senna.

Columns - I used to just look down on it as a Tetris rip-off but it's actually a cool game.  Neat atmosphere, too.

Joe Montana Football - Arcade-style play.  Really easy (like Tecmo Bowl) so you can run the score up like a mofo.

Comix Zone - Beat-em-up with an interesting premise and cool graphics.

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday - Really cool (and fairly short) American-style RPG (mostly conforms to D&D rules.)

Starflight - Hard to explain, except to say that it's awesome.

Batman - Side-scrolling action game.

Madden 93 & 94 - The two best Madden games.  "John Madden Football" is also cool to check out because it was the first Madden game made for a home console.

Street Fighter II Championship Edition - Needs no introduction.

Fire Shark - Vertically-scrolling shooter.

Phelios - Vertically-scrolling shooter with an ancient Greek theme.

NBA Live 95 - My all-time favorite basketball game (though I prefer to play it on SNES).

NHL Hockey (All of them) - I like the first 4 for different reasons, but they are all fun.  After that, they were all the same game with roster updates, but still fun.

PGA Tour Golf I, II, III, and European Tour - Some of the best golf sims ever made.  NHL 96 is the only shitty one on the Genesis.

Insector X  - Insect-based shooter.

Virtua Racing - Choppy and dated, but impressive technologically for it's time.

Turrican - I f*cking love this game.  Unfortunately it is impossibly hard and is more fun to play with cheat codes.  But the levels are so fun to explore that it's still worth it.

Truxton - Classic vertically-scrolling shooter.

Altered Beast - The first pack-in game.  Aged very poorly, but if you can put yourself into the mindset of someone who has been playing nothing but 8-bit games and just bought a Genesis at launch, you can appreciate the huge step forward, technologically.

Thunder Force II - Another launch game.  Levels switch between horizontal scrolling and 360 degree scrolling.  Best Genesis game available on launch day, by far.

Saturday Night Slam Masters - Cartoony arcade-style wrestling at its best.

Crue Ball - Pinball with digitized Motley Crue music.  f*cking awesome.

Championship Pro-Am - Sequel to R.C. Pro-Am series on the NES.  Same gameplay with better graphics and sound.

Virtual Pinball - Make your own pinball tables, much like Pinball Construction Set.  Was developed by the same guy (Bill Budge.)

Sunset Riders - Port of a classic Konami arcade beat-em-up.

Yep, 2 on the Megadrive/Genesis, 3 on the Saturn/PSX (Langrisser 4 on PSX has a fan translation as well), a bastard child on the Dreamcast and a pretty good one on the Wonderswan. There is also a remake of 1 & 2 on the Saturn and PSX.

There is also Der Langrisser on the SNES and PC-FX which is a re-telling of Langrisser 2 but with multiple routes and a few other things added.

First World Problems

Medical bills :(

America has fantastic doctors but it's expensive with co-pays, deductibles, etc. I've sold quite a few things to stay ahead.

You're right, it is a First World Problem so it could be worse...still sucks though

I'm just glad my love of gaming is able to help me out when needed.

MUSHA has been up there for a while now...so probably not the best example to use when saying "its starting"

but i do agree most genny games still havent climbed to silly levels.
and one thing thats good about them is that the packaging has helped keep them somewhat preserved over the years, so its not hard to find complete copies.  just way too many dolts cut the hang tabs off them.

i usually buy loose genny carts now anyway and thats even cheaper.  very few do i want complete.
i dread the day when genny carts cost 10 times their worth like NES now.

and Prof:  i need to go back and refresh which ones i played to make that statement, or it may have just been a general feeling.

I enjoyed a lot of the games.  Sonic 1 being one of my faves, alone with MM2 and Faery Tale Adventures.  I bought Dark Castle relying solely on the box art.....back then companies could screw you over like that....boy did I get screwed on that one....

General consensus is that it's a good game, an earlier shooter with a smaller print run, and ever since a couple YouTube folks reviewed several years ago the price has been spiking upward.  Kind of a victim of its own popularity causing it to continually rise like Magical Chase. I'd like to own it, but I doubt I will ever pay the asking price now, thankfully I already have a fair number of Genesis games I like, the Mega Everdrive will probably keep me busy for awhile now.

I thought Robo-Aleste was pretty tame in comparison to MUSHA Aleste, but man you are GOD DAMN RIGHT Spriggan is better. :)

Hmm...I'm surprised with all the repeated games that the only ones repeated from my list has been Alien Storm, M.U.S.H.A., and Monster World IV.  I would just like to add again...

Darwin 4081 has fans?  Haha, that was one shooter I couldn't get into.  Yeah, Verytex is just a typical shooter, but I always felt it was put together really well.   To me it's the Override of Mega Drive shooters if that makes any sense.  I've also had the game since 92 so maybe I was a little more wowed at the time.  I still play it and love it though.  It is way on the easy side though.

Very true.  But you also don't expect as much in 92.  By then I already had most shooters for the system.  I walked into a local store that had it.  It was used for $10.  It was in great condition and I was always willing to buy another shooter, and since I went in knowing nothing I was really surprised.  Yes the music was a huge part as to why I like the game.  It can really make or break a shooter for me.  That is a huge reason I can't stand Eliminate Down.  Pretty game,  but that music makes my ears bleed.

almost everything. seems to be totally re-drawn/-made from scratch with much better coloring, nicer animations and the best, tons more of action (explosions etc.).

the music sure is debatable. still like the MDs FM tracks a tad better. also considering the fact that the GBA sucks at proper sound quality.

Oh ok, I see what you are saying. You didn't mention you got it for another system. You left out the GBA part in your original post, so I thought you meant that the Mega Drive version looked better then the Genesis one or something. Made me wonder what you were talking about lol.

Earthworm Jim is a good series. The animations kinda affect the controls though.

SNES version is worse since the Genny version was the lead version. Earthworm 2 is better on SNES though.

Late to the party, tl;dr.

My recommendations go like this:

Sonic 1 & 2
Tin Head
Shining In The Darkness
Phantasy Star IV
Jewel Master
Ecco
Castle Of Illusion
Golden Axe
Columns
Midnight Resistance
any Shinobi game

and... that's about it. I was never a huge Sega fan.

I would say if you had a 32X you could take your gameplay up a notch with these games:

MK2 (best most complete port outside of Dos or emulation)
Primal Rage (best port between it, Snes, and Genesis, looks great, plays great even if based off ver. 1.7)
Virtua Fighter (better then Saturn port)
Virtua Racing Deluxe ( personal preference, like this port more then the Genesis and Saturn versions also)
Space Harrier
AfterBurner
Tempo
Knuckles Chaotix (I'm not a fan of this one personally, but other Sonic fans and others seem to swear by it)
Cyber Brawl/Cosmic Carnage (amazing soundtrack, good gameplay, and cool characters when run in JP mode)
T-Mek (better then the buggy Dos port)
Wrestlemania The Arcade Game (best port outside of Dos)
Shadow Squadron
Star Wars Arcade
Doom (better then Snes port easily)
Metal Head
Blackthorne
Kolibri (another one I didn't care for personally but others seem to love)
NBA Jam Tournament Edition
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 (good game if you like Viewpoint. If you hated Viewpoint then ignore this one)

Is MK2 on 32X actually better than the Saturn port?  I have it on Saturn but never played the 32X version.

Another Genesis game I forgot that I really liked is Comix Zone.
Title: Re: Best Sega genesis games

Yeah its much better then the Saturn port. The Saturn port looks great in still shots, but in practice it is a bit of a mess in places. The initial matches contain loading for a brief second when you do a move. The music is PCM handled by the Saturns audio chip instead of being cd audio, and it is subpar (a bit of a insult to the Saturns audio chip). Also, tons of voice samples are missing. There are a couple other minor issues also, but those are the main ones that hurt the game. Some of those issues carrier over to the import PS1 version also.

The 32X version on the other hand has a good soundtrack, most of the voice samples, good sound fx, great control, etc.

Wow Prof, I didn't know you were such a big 32x fan.

When I was a teen I originally got one around mid 1995. Not a mega fan of it, but I'd easily put its game library up against something like the Atari Jaguar any day of the week. It was a good add on, and it got some good games in its fairly short life span. I was more then happy to get one again, s-video mod it and start enjoying some proper MK2 and Virtua Fighter again.

Lol, I have not seen anyone mention Phar-Mor in years. We had one that closed up in the early 90s. They had a video rental in there that I got a lot of nice Nes games from before they closed the store.

If something as mundane as cutting tabs is what you classify a "joy", then you and i wouldnt be very good friends.

Most of the cases that I have without hang tabs are definitely not "clean cut".  A lot of them are all crooked with excess sharp plastic left over or have been unevenly torn off.  One was sharp enough to cut my forearm when I quickly reached over/between my Genesis games.

Lol, I never cut off the tabs unless they're already mangled.  I've found a nice sharp x-acto/utility knife and a steady hand is all you need to make them look nice.

I put a few drops of hydrochloric acid on the tabs. A few applications and you are good to go.

Here's one that I doubt anyone has mentioned: Scooby-Doo Mysteries

No, I am NOT trolling. It sounds like it would be just another licensed platformer, and as far as I know, the SNES version is just that, but the Genesis version does something so unique for the platform and does it so well, that it deserves more exposure. It's actually a LucasArts-style point-and-click adventure game, and a fairly good one at that! It's not easy or dumbed down, either. Some of the puzzles are deviously challenging , but quite clever. If you're into this style of game, you NEED to check this out, Scooby-Doo fan or not.

Seconded! I played through Scooby Mysteries for the first time just last year, and I was surprised at how good it turned out to be. Too bad there weren't more games like this on the 16-bit consoles...

My all-time favorite Genesis game, though, has to be Landstalker. It has some of the best dungeons and puzzles of any action-RPG, and it looks great (as long as you can deal with the 3/4 perspective). 8)

Landstalker is a polarizing game, but at least its cheap. So if you wind up in the camp that dislikes it, at least it won't have cost much.

I was very disappointed by it back in the day. It looked fun in screen shots, but doesn't live up to its potential.

Two things that stand out to me are lack of boss fights and impossible-to-know-for-certain-the-position-of-platforms, which set you back too far if you guess wrong.

I can totally get that. I was the only one of my circle of friends to actually beat Solstice on the NES, so I think I was pre-conditioned for isometric platforming by the time I got around to Landstalker.

Yep, the Isometric view just made it harder to control and play. I don't "dislike" the game. I think it would have been a lot better with an overhead view. It's too bad the PSP remake with the controllable camera never got finished.
