Are you happy with your game collection?
Or do you feel the concept of collecting is lame?
Thread inspired by this YouTube video I just watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zrO-Xm2sc8
I'll admit it I'm not happy with my collection.
A few years back I was, I had a very near complete mint NTSC-J PC Engine collection. I had over 700 PCE games with all the rarez, only had two rare games left to get which was Akiyama Jin and Power League All Star Gold.
Super Famicom my other favorite console I had hundreds of mint games, I didn't want the full NTSC-J SFC set though as too much crap. Every game I had for it was decent, and I had the rarez for it too.
Then mega pressure from my wife as all my stuff was taking up too much room and I sold most of it.
After that I doubt I'll ever fully get back into collecting again unless there's a massive price crash and then I'll buy everything back.
-
The real question is how you could be happy with a collection that is worth more than your house and car combined, pisses your wife off, and that you clearly can't afford to own. You'd think all that anxiety would really reduce the enjoyment you'd get from staring at thousands of dollars worth of unplayable garbage.
-
I'm happy with my collection, but I don't collect shit games for the sake of some moronic braggadocio.
-
I think my collection is getting smaller as I have been in this longer. I have stopped going to garage sales as much, and just buying anything that I could flip and have good trade bait for local meet ups and what not. I am picky now, and have traded a lot of my games I picked up for cheap.
I have really enjoyed almost everything about my Duo since I really got into PC Engine/TG16. I will always keep the games I grew up playing either at my house or at a friends. But outside of those, the only ones I want and hold dear are my PCE/TG games..... and my arcade cabinets, haha.
But I am happy with my collection. Its getting more refined with better things that I actually care about. Like my Duo and Express, and the awesome PCE design games I get to play on pressed discs. I think a lot of people get lost in just Numbers, or how many of something you have.... When really it should more talk to you about what you love, and are passionate about. I love my Hudson stuff, and my childhood games.
Just my 2 cents..

I'm happy that fortunately I have had and still have a decent disposal income to indulge myself with a collection. Irrespective of the size of that collection, that in itself is good enough for me.
-
Both #1 and #2 for me. I could happily spend the rest of my life playing only the oodles of great games I already own and not lose any sleep over it, but that doesn't mean I don't want more. There's plenty of existing PCE, PC-FX, PSP, and Vita games that I haven't picked up (or even heard of yet), and there'll surely be new stuff that I want, either homebrew or regular commercial games.

Probably the same here. I've got plenty (maybe more than I need) of games and hardware, enough to keep my entertained for a long time, but there is always fun stuff coming out and new old titles that I'm finding out about.
Similar to Otaking my wife is complaining about space, but I'm finding other ways to make it work for now.

I have stopped collecting anything besides 8-bit and 16-bit generation. I been really into collecting for the pce lately. I have sold off most of my N64 and gamecube stuff. I may have to unload some ps1 and ps2 stuff soon but I been more reluctant to let that go.
I go through these strange phases where I will stop collecting games for a month or two and collect hardware variations of consoles I love. Does anyone else do that?

Ive been really trying to manage my collection over the last 2 years to only games I play, will play again or want to play some day. Also now that I have kids I have stuff I think they'd like or might enjoy when they are older. After this last local swap meet I got rid of the rest of the sports titles and junk I didn't want like crappy US super hero games and stuff and even traded up to games I wanted in the process. I am really happy with what I have and love looking through my shelf to pick out some thing to play each time
-
I have a pretty nice little library, as I've mentioned before I'm all about curating it so I have just games that I really like. Still tons of games I'd love to pick up, but also I think I could be pretty content on a desert island with what I have now. Getting new hotness is all part of the fun, though I admit the more I pickup the scarier my backlog becomes. As much as I like a good solid action adventure title, the time investment on those is just too long. So lately I've been more appreciate of simple action, puzzle and arcade titles. Another reason I love the Game Boy lately; I just love something I can pick up and play for a little bit rather than work at for weeks. It's full of small time investment titles.

I think that it's ridiculous to count promo titles like Power League All Star Gold as part of a "complete set".
I pretty much just pick up games that I want to play for one reason or another. If (better) flashcarts get released for a few more platforms, then it would minimize buying of a lot of games that aren't a high enough priority for me to bother buying at any price so far. I may end up with a few small complete'ish sets by other people's standards in the end, but what I count and what I want to have a hard copy of are both different than what organized collecting counts as part of "sets".
I'm perfectly happy with what I plan to keep after getting rid of more extra hardware and some games. I never feel the need to have a game, unless I'm interested in it and it's the only way for me to play it on real hardware. If a game I want to be able to play on real hardware (but can't use a flashcart for) is super expensive, I'd rather just buy a repro if it's reasonably priced.
My most prized possessions are things I've kept since bitd. No copy of Magical Chase will ever mean as much to me as the one I began playing 90 seconds after buying it new. I recently had my original TurboDuo refurbished and it's finally my main playing setup again. I can't express how happy that makes me. :)

If your not happy with your collection, then you should really look at your life. If you just want more, aren't enjoying the games and the process what's the point, you'll never be happy, once you get a fullset of one, you'll be trying to move onto something else. sounds like a terrible cycle to me.
Personally, I like the ability to collect when I can but not havong the feeling of I need to, or that it defines me any way, I haven't had much time to "collect" lately, but I've been spending my free time playing. And having a blast, and hey if I fond 10 more games I want and have access to them then awesome, if not ehhhhhhhhh At least I played and have as many as I do.
Now as far as porn collections, I mean can your spank bank ever be big enough :?:

Recently I had this realization. I am content with my game collection. The library is strong I have whittled much of the junk down to where I can grab any game off my shelf and enjoy it.
Sure at times I feel like a Disney Princess where I break out in song exclaiming I want more. However this sensation had lessened significantly. I feel the desire for additional games (when speaking retro) when I learn of a game I was unaware of before and would like to experience based on recommendation.
I blame the excellent you tubers like my life in gaming, game sack, and so forth who put heart into their content. Showing me something new or under the radar that warrants a second look.

I'm happy with my "collection" but I am slightly bummed about what has happened to the hobby.
I started "collecting" in 2006, and I have less than 50 each for NES, SNES, Genesis, PCE, probably around 30 each for those. The part of the hobby I enjoy is learning about new old games, or getting reacquainted with games I played in the past, and taking my time to enjoy them. So I don't go out and drop $$$ on big lots of games or have some checklist of must haves.
What bums me out is how the list of games that become "collectarded" in an inflated way for the original keeps growing, occasionally throwing the siren song of "better buy it now before the price goes up" that I have to fight against. So I content myself with flash carts, CD-Rs, and emulation for games in that category, and keep a mental list of games that are expensive but I keep and eye out for when good deals present. Playing the "slow game" that way is more satisfying than using my wallet like a club like the collectards and keeps the "hunt" part of "collecting" interesting and satisfying.

I'm not happy with my collection anymore but it has no real impact on my general "life", they're just video games.
Video games don't define me as a person in any way, if it got to that stage I'd be very worried.
-
I'm satisfied for what's i have in my collection.Still there's all ways a game that i'm missing, which means on the hunt for said game still.Least i have most of what i want for the famicom, pce and neo-geo all ready. For older video games i'm still rebuilding my genesis, snes collection even though i have a everdrive for both.Still i doubt for some games i will ever replace again such as snatcher. The sega-cd version has gotten way to expensive for my taste.Any thing at all i just buy what i want to play, don't care for having every game made for the console.
-
I don't consider myself a collector. But the games I have amassed over the years is really starting to show.
What I typically do now is I budget myself. I have been fixing and selling the older consoles and any profit from that I put straight back into the games I want. That way I am not spending any of my normal paycheck money on gaming anymore. It was a real struggle for a couple months not being able to buy any games at all for anything.
But if a game comes along on a current console or PC or I missed or want some RPG from one of the older consoles I just have to work harder to get that extra money I need to feed the gamer in me.
I made this decision earlier in 2015 as I spent nearly $15k on computer gear, consoles, games etc. I realized I needed to supplement my gaming habbits as it was costing me to much. I don't consider myself a collector because most of that money was on my computers, server rack, home network etc, and I was just updating them with current hardware.
-
Great advice. I got started about a year ago and was totally ignorant to the hobby of collecting and the retro communities that exist. I started just wanting to get back the games and consoles I traded away as a kid. I quickly got addicted after accomplishing that goal. I just recently realized a complete or almost complete NES collection isn't worth it. I've got the money to acquire more but I'm going to concentrate more on getting titles for other consoles. Having a budget is a big key.

Im fairly happy this time around with my game library. I only pick up what I know I will play now, making my list easier to narrow down. Gonna take the PC-FX plunge this year sometime, as there are a small handful of titles I want for it. Lately I have been focusing on Super Famicom in between handling the repros with the team. Thanks to Mathius for that piece of hardware!!!

The only FX game I'd like is the ghost and goblins.

Actually completely forgot I had the complete set of PC-FX games as well. To be honest I don't miss it, the only three games I liked were Zeroigar, Zenki and Chip Chan Kick. In fact Chip Chan Kick was really good, I think it deserves more recognition. I've heard Power Dolls FX is a decent strategy game, I'd planned t play that next but ended up just selling the lot.
Before anyone says well why the f*ck did you collect the complete set, well I was learning Japanese at the time and I planned to play though the games as I learnt the language and then be able to appreciate them.

I think you're thinking SuperGrafx
-
I got a PCFX back in the late 90's at some point because I became obsessed with Battle Heat clips I was watching from some website. Just seemed like an awesome concept, a fully animated FMV fighting game. In retrospect, I still think it looks and sounds really cool, but the gameplay isn't what I had hoped for back then. I still have it, but I never expanded on my FX library. I always wanted the Tengai Makyou FMV fighter, and my friends and I had a strange draw towards Team Innocent. I would like to get both one day, no hurry though. Zeroigar, Zenki FX and Chip Chan Kick would be awesome too, even though the first two are really pricey so I don't expect that to happen for a while. The rest of the games on the system seemed to be girly dating sims/digital comics, which don't interest me too much. Actually I really like digital comics, just not the moe girly ones. I can't think of any serious/science fiction/horror ones on the system off the top of my head though.

Why yes I am. Lol

im very happy and proud of my collection and how far its come in the 11 years ive been collecting.......buuut it would be nice to add more games in the collection. I used to collect pretty much anything and everything gaming related but realized i was collecting way too much and got rid of a lot of the games and systems i didnt play anymore. i only buy games i like. I've definitely slowed down the purchases by a lot as of late due to space and just to be able to catch up on the games i have now. i really enjoy my collection since its full of systems and games that i enjoy or grew up with.
-

I'd kinda like to get a complete PC-FX set, but mostly because I picked up those three and a bunch of less pricey titles for cheap. The games I already own are probably 80% of the library in terms of cost, so why not?
Yes, I'm retarded.
-
I'm happy with the games I own. About a year ago, I sold a lot of games to help pay bills. Fortunately I avoided the drama that we saw play out here.
I really should part with more of it thanks to everdrives and cdrs.
-
I'm happy with my collection because I love the PCE and am happy to have a large amount of games.. however, for someone who got a turbo in '91 and PCE games staring in '92, I feel like I should have more when compared to those who just discovered the PCE like 1 year or 2 ago and have like 100+ games. There's still many key-titles I'm missing too.

I'm a little bit in the same boat. I used to have a lot of key titles in my original set from the 90's that are now a little harder to get. I kept most of my imports but stupidly traded in many of my TG-16 games in 95'. But even now I'm not going to dump a ton of money into reacquiring them. Besides, half the fun is in finding a good deal when they come up.
-
Always nice to find a cart you don't have in the wild. Especially when you don't expect to find it. I don't like what is happening to the scene in terms of pricing and rampant fraud so I am not as crazy a collector as I used to be.
-
I'm happy with my collection. Really i have almost everything i want. That is a big almost because I'm just not going to pay the going rates for Pocky and Rocky or MUSHA. My wife is actually really supportive of my collection even though she is not a gamer. The only real stipulation is that it looks good a la well shelved and organized. She readily encourages me to buy stuff. Its really easy to get caught up in the gotta catch'em all mentality and I have before but I'm content to keep my buying to garage sales and such. It's nice to chill in my game room, and im happy just to set there and watch my kids play games.
Edit: f*cking tapatalk bulshit, got a new phone got to change settings .
