I think my ps3 just broke
« on: November 11, 2011, 07:34:54 AM »
I NEED YOUR HELP GUYS
I think my ps3 just kicked the bucket. I was playing U3 and it just shut off on my. and the red light just kept blinking, i tried to turn it on, and i saw a yellow light for a second, then it would just turn off again. I turned it off by hitting the power switch in the back, and when i turned it back on i help the eject button, and was able to get my copy of u3 out of it. But when i try to turn it on now, it just shows the green light, then the yellow light, then it just blinks red. If someone can let me know what i can try to do to repair it that would be appreciated

Yikes, that doesn't sound good.  I know I've had a couple of times when my system tries to shut down, but doesn't.  What you're describing though, doesn't sound good.  I think there was a firmware quite some time ago that was causing some problems, but I'll assume you're all up to date on the firmware's.  I actually like to atleast wait a day or 2 before getting new firmware, just incase there is some kind of problem.  All I can say it talk to Sony & see what they say, but maybe somebody else here can figure out what's going on??

^ i looked it up. its basically what plagued the xbox 360 with the red ring of death. ps3 version is called the yellow light of death. basically the heat sync stopped doing its job, so now there's an issue with the solder on the board. I would call sony and pay for a fix, but i have a Japanese ps3, so they won't touch it, they would want me to send it away to japan for repair. so I;m going to attempt to fix it myself tomorrow. Wish me luck guys

Oh for the days when you could just turn a PlayStation on its side to make it work again.

So do you have one of the original PS3 systems... the backwards compatible one? As my buddy had to retired his as the heat was doing a number on his board it seamed like every month. The newer ones are much more durable. So my buddy got a new slim one.. works great but when she heats up sometimes you hear the plastic "pop" expand on the case... there cookers!!!

I've often thought about getting one of those laptop fans to plug into my PS3 to help cool it off, has anone ever tried that?  I have ye old 60 GB model, I'd prefer it not burn out on me if I can help it, I do sometimes play PS2 games on it if I can't get them to rip properly on my PS2.

i was able to fix it. I reflowed the solder using a heat gun, and applied new thermal paste to the cpu and gpu. I suggest you guys with the old models look up how to do it. It seems like its only a matter of time until the thermal paste dries up and the heat sync stops doing its job

Sorry to get off topic, but it makes you think about how well-built the old game consoles are when you can play games on a 20+ year old system and it still works like a charm while newer systems seem to kick to bucket after only a couple years.

Yeah I've got a few busted ones, but the ones which are still trucking after all of these years really stood the test of time! Basically anything with moving parts is bound to fail at some point, which is why I really love all the cart/card based systems.

This!

And this is also why I won't pay a dime for a 360, PS3 or any other system that will come out in the future. I'm a classic gamer and damn proud of it! 8)

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!
