game gear back light
« on: November 12, 2011, 01:58:38 PM »
A few of you out there mentioned wanting to do a sega game gear back light. I recently recapped two game gears and back lit them. The hardest part of the back light mod is stopping screen bleed from the leds. many people have come up with creative methods but have not been quite perfect.  For those of you wishing to do this mod, when you go to install the leds, sand them like other mod authors have suggested to help diffuse the light. Also, i discovered, if you paint half the led with white acrylic paint, an then mount the led with the white paint pointing towards the screen, it will almost remove screen bleed.  I have seen others use white electric tape to do the same thing. I hope this helps anyone looking to do the mod. Im an amateur, but if i can help anyone, let me know. i would be happy to give alittle back to this community.

A bought a yellow GG recently which looks awesome but the screen is a little faded. Not sure if I want to try a LED mod on it quite yet but would replacing the caps help with the screen brightness issue? It just looks a little light/washed out.

Samurai i'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. The led mod in my opinion solves alot of the backlighting and brightness issues.  However, unless you own a majesco version of the game gear, the screen will always look alittle washed. It is my understanding that the majesco game gear has a much better screen and audio.  Its also much newer and most likely to not need a recap.  even after the led mod, the brightness dial still works, and if you paint the top of the leds that are facing the screen with white acrylic paint, you should not get any spotting.  I hope this helps. if you go to do the mod, i will help you any way i can.

btw, the red green and blue dots at the top left of a game gear will be all white on a majesco version. this is how you can tell the difference.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware there were models made by Majesco and that they were different!

Here is a good one

Make sure you sand the leds though and paint them white on the side that faces the screen. White acrylic paint from walmart works great.
