Wizardry games
« on: December 03, 2011, 02:58:50 PM »
So I got to thinking last night when I was playing Wizardry IV for the billionth time, why in the world have people not translated the rest of the text in those games? I mean, the english is already there, can't be too much hacking involved and they are basically supped up ports of the pc versions! Dunno, it was just something I was curious about seeing how Rondo of Blood got translated from the PSP remake. I also noticed something too (and maybe Arkahan can elaborate) loading times seem to be  a little less with the arcade card in my Duo-R...

I don't think Wizardry III/IV supports the arcade card.  Are you sure you're not just seeing things? lol

I suppose if they wrote some really jazzy loading code that checked how much RAM is available before loading, it would mean they could stuff more useful stuff in, and as a result not need to load as much over and over?

I didn't think it did neither, but it seems to run a little bit better. Damn game still takes up all my duo memory though....

I imagine it has entirely to do with that English speakers are largely ignorant of Wizardry existing outside of Nintendo and the PC.

Except for Wizardry 4 was never released on the consoles over here. I don't think 3 was neither, so there is your incentive! Although it did come out for the PC-9801...

but when they came out, consoles weren't really taking off yet, lol.

Wizardry 3 was like pre NES!

But it looks damn good on the PCE. I forgot there was a Super Famicom release of 1-3 (and some "elite" rom hacker group translated it in the late 90s), but it looks nowhere near as good as the PCE version. I dunno, its about as close as we are going to get as a remake for these games. Wizardry Gold Edition just didn't do enough justice.

yeah.

The PCE versions of these games really are the high points of them all, honestly.

Too bad we didn't see 6 or 7 on PCE.

Yeah, still fun. But 4 is definitely my favorite out of them all. 8 comes in a close second while 7 comes in third. If anything, we should have a contest on who can finish Wizardry 4 the fastest with the best ending. Its a hard game even on the pce with all the enhancements like monsters leveling up, bribing Trebor and the ability to replenish your monsters as in the original game you had to go to the pentagram and re-summon them. However, it would even be more playable if the rest of the game had English inserted where there was Japanese. I mean, come on now, when I see on the front page of romhacking.net that people are still hacking Final Fantasy games instead of spending time doing stuff that hasn't been released in the U.S just irritates me. End of Rant on that one. ^^ At any rate, I wonder if that tool that was used on Rondo of Blood to insert english works for any other pc engine cd games?

They haven't released a bad wizardry game to date.

Every one of them including the latest one on PS3, is excellent.

Didn't realize they made a Wizardry game for the PS3, I thought it was basically done with after Wizardry 8 and only Japanese releases went on after that! Thats a bit of good news then. ^^ Still, you would think with these newer Wizardry games it would kindle interest in translating the ones we haven't seen here in the U.S....
Edit: Even for the Iphone too? Sweet! Too bad I don't have a Iphone though...

Yeah, after Sirtech bit the sack, Atlus published Tale of the Forsaken Land for PS2.  It was incredible, to say the least.  Definitely one of the best games I played for PS2.  This year marks Wizardry's 30'th anniversary, and they are calling it the Wizardry Renaissance.

The latest game, Labyrinth of Lost Souls was released on physical disc in Japan, and download only here.

My best explanation for this is: American gamers are stupid pussies now.

The game wouldn't sell well on disc here.  Everyones too sissy pansy about games, and want foofoo spoonfed Zelda bullshit.

That Dark Spire game they released a few years back kicked ass, and most people that played it cried themselves to sleep in the 3rd hallway.
