This question really depends on whether you already have an NES and all of the North American releases, or if you don't.  If you don't have an NES, then you have to get games like Mario Bros 1 & 3, Doki Doki Panic if you get a FDS, Metroid, Punch Out, etc.

Now if you are looking for good exclusives to Japan, you should try out:
- The Goonies (my favorite game not to get a U.S. release)
- Wai Wai World 2 (I found part 1 too be too confusing with the language barrier)
- Splatterhouse
- Kid Dracula
- Mr. Gimmick
- Adventure Island IV
- Holy Diver
- Joy Mecha Fight

Just to name a few.

Well I am a PCE person now, but I go back to the Famicom every once in a red moon.

If you can find a cheap NES system then get that and get a converter, that covers most famicom game, usage. Get a real famicom and reversal converter, if you want the extra features the famicom was built with.

The famicom/NES has tons of games that out weigh almost ever other console on the planet, while most are meant for children, the system is pretty nice. Most of the games plays like a Gameboy game, but in color with a bigger screen ( and thus smaller sprites ).

Duck Hunt ( for the obvious reason ) for the NES
Mario 3
Megaman
Battletoads ( exact same Battles for DKC 1-3 )
Dragon Warrior/Quest
BomberKing

If you just want something to play around with for quick fun, then get one of those 55 in one carts, because Game and watch games is where the famicom shines.

Disk system is just their for show, I have a couple of disc system games. Most games on the NES are great,
for quick fun. Basically an Atari but with love inside.

i'm not sure how a famicom is basically an atari.....no offense, but that statement is a long stretch of the imagination. I have nothing against the atari, i grew up with it. However, i cant think of a single example of an atari game that comes anywhere close to what a famicom can do. That's assuming your referencing the 2600.  Other members have mentioned games like crisis force, summer carnival 92, and wai wai world. If there was anything remotely close to that on the 2600 it would have been a whole different ball game.

Yeah, you can't really compare the Famicom/NES to the Atari at in any way other than that they were both insanely popular and were both the reigning home consoles for many years in the US. There are plenty of NES/Famicom games you can pour many dozens of hours into.

Oh, I've given my Atari all kinds of lovin'.

I had no idea consoles could get restraining orders.

Technically, isn't the NES chipset a souped up 2600?  I read that in The Ultimate History of Video Games, unless the book was lying.

Clash, its my understanding that the atari and the nes cpu's are very similar. I read in the benheck forums years back that the atari flashback products were actually made possible by the "nintendo on a chip" hardware as they were so similar. That may or may not be right, but it seems possible.

The NES used an ricoh 2A03 which was based on a MOS 6502 core.
The 2600 used the MOS 6507 which is basically a 6502 in a slightly different housing.

In the time the 2600 (77) and the FC (83) were released, this was one of the most popular and affordable 8-bit processor for any kind of computing application (consoles, arcade boards, home Comps etc.), which was later replaced by the superior motorola 68000 (i think same developers were behind that), for similar application fields.

So yes, they were very similar, but which counts for almost any game and/or computer systems from that time.
