JVC X-Eye questions
« on: February 08, 2012, 02:15:49 PM »
Finally got myself one of these beasts, however I have a few questions.
1. Is the cd rom region free like the Duo?
2. Can I play burnt games on it and if so, should I burn them at the lowest speed possible and use my lifetime graded cdrs?
3. Are there any known issues with these machines? Do I have to get the caps replaced, cd drive replaced, etc?
4. Are there any games/peripherals I can't play on this?

Edit: Guess I should have read what I was getting, this damn thing doesn't come with the hookups to my tv! Is there a RCA cable that will hook up from the X-Eye to the tv or am I stuck with the av cable?

Thanks guys ahead of time for any info!

1. No, Sega CD/Mega CD games are not region free. You'll need to get a BIOS cart or mod to play Japanese games.
2. Yes, CDRs play fine and work perfectly! No worries there.
3. Well any CD-based system has moving parts which are easier to break then cart-based systems. But if it's working fine then there's no need to get it refurbished really. I have a couple old Wondermegas that work perfectly.
4. Heard of issues with the Justifier light gun but I'm not sure.

Edit: There are just your standard RCA hook-ups on the back of the X'eye. Any standard RCA cable will work. I think you can use your standard Genesis AV cable as well if you want to. It's missing the godly s-video of the Wondermega unfortunately.

Thanks! Are you willing to sell your Wondermegas? Just curious. :)
I guess a av cable is going to have to work grrrr really don't want to spend $10 on one on the bay.

Just use an RCA cable! I'm sure you have one lying around the house.

And yeah, I might sell a Wondermega down the line, although they're not the cheapest things in the world!

Yeah kind of figured as much. ^^ Now to dig through my closet of lost treasures. :P
So a normal RCA cable will work eh, cool.

Samurai, what is the bios cart you speak of? You have peeked my interest. It might explain why i could not get some games working.

There's a dedicated cart called the MegaCart which makes your SegaCD/MegaCD region free.

http://products.genny4ever.net/megacart_v1x.html

It's pretty expensive, almost the same cost as an Everdrive (flash cart), and people have been successful getting their SegaCDs to different regions by loading the appropriate BIOS ROM via an Everdrive cart, so you might as well get the Everdrive as you can use it to play lots of ROMs, homebrew, etc., as well as unlocking your SegaCD/MegaCD.

Note that if you're going to burn CDs, you can put most game rips through a conversion program to change the region. Google mcdconv, and use an emulator to check the region of your rip.
