A thread to look back on and give praise to the long forgotten, mostly unacknowledged arcade ports. If you have a port in mind, post about it, and provide comparison pics and a detailed description on the ports quality. I start this thread off with a really long ignored title, World Heroes 1 on Snes. Yes, pt 1, not 2, not Jet, not Perfect, just pt 1. Lets begin:
I had not played this port since I was in my early teens. Picked it up for Snes the other day and gave it a go. I was totally amazed at how superior a port it was compared to the port of World Heroes 2 Takara/Saurus had handled. Even though the screen size had to be cut down, it is more along the size of World Heroes 2 on Arcade CD then the scrunched mess WH2 is on Snes. Most of the character animation is present. The sound fx and voices are intact, as is the music. I would have to say things sound warmer on Snes then NeoGeo, but the music is not as rich sounding over all though on a few tracks. Blood is missing from attacks compared to the original Neo release. On the US Snes release, death match is renamed "Fatal Match".
Backgrounds are mostly all ported over faithfully except for Brocken's, which is missing the most, the tanks on one of the elevator floors, and some other details which ended up being changed. Other then that, the only real gripe about the Snes port's backgrounds is maybe on some areas there is a lack of animation compared to the Neo original, or some minor color changes. Given more ram, this port perhaps could have included all the missing content if nothing else. Most of the stages are very faithful over all when its all said and done. The character select screen is a tad different, but the versus portraits are on the Snes game, as is the story scenes. The control on the Snes port is tight over all, and allows the choice of the original Neo button layout, or a 5 button one where heavy attacks are assigned their own buttons. The command for Hanzo and Fuma's Serpentine Spiral move has been changed it seems, but is still easy to pull off.
All in all I would say as far as ports go, World Heroes 1 on Snes is just as good a port as any of the Neo ports on Pce Arcade CD goes. When compared to the rest of the Neo ports on Snes, about the only thing better is maybe Fatal Fury Special, and that really may vary from person to person. For the most part, WH 1 on Snes stayed very intact. Sunsoft was clearly on top of things on this port. Really it is a shame they could not have handled the other Snes ports, as they clearly had more expertise then Takara and Saurus had doing it.
