Here's what I've been using as my ULTIMATE set ups.
Sharp Twin turbo model with a converter to play US games
Japanese Master System with a converter - yeah get my FM ON
PC-E Duo R with region mod and purple LED, RGB modded with new laser
White Japanese Saturn with region mod and mod chip, I want the video expansion cart soon
SNES with tabs broken to play SFC games and purple LEDs to light up the cart slot lol
PCE GT with region mod and all caps replaced
Genesis with cart slot cut to play MD games with model 1 cd, I'd like to unibios the cd rom but can't find the chips anymore :( also need to region mod switch the genesis
CD-i 450 with video cart
PS1 with stealth mod chip

Ultimate NES is a Famicom Titler. Give me S-video or give me death. Unfortunately I am a little hesitant to pay the the above 1k price on one. Runner up would be a RGB modded Top Loader.

Ultimate Genesis is the CDX. It is a lovely piece of kit. So lovely in fact that I never play mine due to fear of it breaking, so I leave it in the box and play on a Genesis Model 1 instead.

Ultimate PC Engine would be a LT + Interface Unit + milky white CD-ROM2. For better colour consistency perhaps LT + that rare adapter + Super CD-ROM2.

Ultimate GBA is the last SP model with the bright back light and official Nintendo headphone adapter. The screen on that is actually better quality than the DS Lite, which is crazy.

And of course, no ultimate setup would be complete without a Studio grade CRT TV to play games on via RBG, or failing in that, S-video.

I've got...

[ul][li]S-Video/RCA/Unibios modded JP Neo-Geo[/li][li]S-Video/RCA/FM Chip modded Sega Master System US Model 1[/li][li]S-Video/RCA/Region modded Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 US combo[/li][li]S-Video/RCA modded SuperGrafx + Super CDRom2[/li][li]Gamecube + Components[/li][li]Dreamcast + VGA[/li][li]SNES + S-vid/Stereo[/li][li]Saturn + S-vid/Stereo[/li][li]Sharp Twin Famicom (the only non-s-video system in my setup...sigh)[/li][/ul]
All going into a Sony 27" HD-CRT (4:3, 1080i): http://www.mediacollege.com/equipment/sony/tv/kv/kv27hs420.html. It's about as close as I can get to an RGB quality display without breaking the bank or doing crazy mods.

I used to have a Sony PVM 2030 25" Studio CRT, which I sold years ago. I kick myself every time I think about that. It was a hell of a set and they're hard to find in good shape. Ah well.

My consolized 2 slot is kind of "ultimate" since it has component, composite, s-video and a UniBIOS.

Most of my other systems are region hacked (SS, GC, Duo R, SNES, PS) but not really what I would call "ultimate" since they are otherwise stock.

My what I consider my ultimate retro setups:

 * Sega CD - RGB out to Component video (with adapter) -with purple LED mod, and single power brick for both systems
 * Duo-R - RGB out to Component video (with adapter), with flashcart and purple LED mod
 * SNES - RGB out to Component video (with adapter)
 * Saturn - RGB out to Component video (with adapter) - with blue LED mod, mod chip and region switch installed,
 * Gamecube - RGB out to Component video (with adapter) - LED mod
 * PS2 - with hard drive installed, mod chipped and exploit installed (play imports, install games to hard drive)

All this going to a Sony CRT like this one:

I used to have a 36" WEGA that looked exactly like that.  It was way too heavy.  After getting it installed in 3 different houses I gave it to a friend because I was about to move again and didn't want to move it.  But man it had an awesome picture!

I miss that TV...

I have:

-Unmolested NES 1, plays in composite, not much of a choice there.
-Unmolested Sega Master System, plays in component video
-Unmolested Genesis/Sega CD 32X combo, plays in component video
-Unmolested TurboGrafx-16 attached to molested interface unit to output RGB.  Plays in component.
-Unmolested SNES, plays in component.
-Neo Geo AES molested to install Universe BIOS and RGB bypass.  Unmolested otherwise.  Plays in component.
-Molested Sega Saturn with region switching.  Unmolested otherwise, plays in component.
-N64 de-molested to allow RGB output.  Plays in component.
-Playstation molested with region bypass.  Plays in s-video.  It's the Playstation, f*ck it... too lazy to care.
-Dreamcast molested for region bypass.  Plays in component.
-Unmolested Playstation 2. Plays in component.
-Unmolested Gamecube.  Plays in component.
-Software molested Xbox.  Plays in component.
-Unmolested Wii.  Plays in component.
-Unmolested Xbox 360 "slim".  Plays in HDMI.
-Unmolested PS3 "slim".  Plays in HDMI.

I have one of these :)

Not my picture but you get the idea. The Sharp Game TV! A 19in crt with built-in nes.

I have, or am working on a few ultimate setups here.

NES top loader with AV mod and a PowerPak (would like to RGB it sometime)

SNES mini with RGB mod and the tabs cut out to play imports

JVC X'Eye (the best Genesis/Sega CD)

Homemade Neptune (work in progress)

TG16 setup- TG16 has AV and region switch, CD dock has RGB out, has an arcade card and a modified tap to accept PCE controllers

Neo Geo home system with a unibios and a component/svideo mod that uses the regular AV port so it looks unmodified. It's paired with a old style joystick with Seimitsu parts

Consolized Neo with unibios and component video, jamma connector still intact for cab play (not that I have a cab.)
