Ys Origin being release next week!
« on: May 24, 2012, 12:19:38 AM »
Finally, an official English translation.  I still hope there'll be a Vita or PS3 version down the line, but this'll do for now! http://www.worldofys.com/yso/

It's the seventh title in the series, but it's a prequel set hundreds of years before the first game.

Just looked at the website finally. I'm using my cell phone tethered to my laptop so it's not the fastest. Looks nice!

Yeah. Sounds awesome, doesn't it? They could have done some fascinating things to the franchise with an Ys prequel, but they instead opted to make a dumb inconsequential story about Darm Tower.

I actually love this game, I played thru it with Yunica in Japanese, & had a hell of a time personally.  Never got around to playing Hugo or The Claw, but now I will.

Yeah, it's sad, but some developers have to cut corners and only have the story contained in a tower, of which there are different climates on each floor. Should get the job done at its core.

In spite of my last comment, I wish to heartily support this release. It's a good game. Buy it.
I think my only problem was that my expectations for the game were too high. I should have learned more about it before I played it. You should know that:
a) The entire game takes place inside Darm Tower.
b) Despite the title, the plot has little to do with the true origins of Ys. I really wanted a game that took place earlier, when Ys was created, or when it "vanished". Instead, it takes place sometime between when Ys vanished and the events of Ys 1.
c) I was expecting the game to be more different depending on which character you choose. I was told that each character had their own scenario, so I was actually expecting the levels and everything to be completely different. Instead, it's the same levels with different dialog, and if I remember correctly the strategies for the bosses are different, and some of the enemies(?).

If you know what to expect, you should enjoy it. If you liked Oath in Felghana or Ark of Napishtim, you'll find a lot of the same fun gameplay here, with the added bonus of getting to use projectile attacks in addition to the normal melee combat you've come to expect with Adol.

Yeah, it's a dungeon crawler.  When I bought it pre-ordered it back....2006 I think(?), I guess I knew what to expect.  Ofcoarse, since I don't know any Japanese, I didn't learn a whole lot in the scenario, so I'm excited to actually read the story this time. :)

I was a little disappointed when I learned it was just Darm Tower, but so far I'm loving it.

Completed the first run through. The story is really what makes this game great; I love seeing the history of Ys, as well as what Dalles used to look like before he went all dark Jedi - I'm now on my second run with Hugo Fact and it is still totally addictive.

Completed with Yunica and Hugo Fact now. Damn this is a good game, I like how you get a slightly different story with each character. Time for my last run with Toal, hope his claws are fun.
